Canadians for some reason CBC Gem has the VVitch and might be free to watch? Not sure but it's kind of interesting they went so hard on horror movies next to Schitt's Creek and The National.

Gore: A - solid
Length: A+ - 80 minutes! Hell yeah
Primo the German Shepherd: A+ - good doggo, best actor in the movie, focus of the most heart wrenching scene

You could do a lot worse for werewolf movies, but, sadly, there’s not that many options for doing better. Middle of the pack.

Bad Moon has such a strong opening then an almost plummet into the center of the earth in quality then a leap back into the stratosphere for a ending.

Oh, by the way.

If enough people are still interested, we can still do the April Horror Movie Challenge.

I've been a little distracted with CineD Z-Fest, a global pandemic, and offline stuff, but I haven't forgotten.

That still gives people one or two days to plan out a list (if they haven't already), and the thread will launch on April 1st.

If not, we can wait until May, as usual. But since social distancing is at least intact until the end of April, the distraction still seems appropriate.

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I very much want it in April. I’ve been worried that between the Z Fest and Brackets that’s falling through the cracks and dreading an April Fools Joke. But I’m silly and have a huge list and schedule worked out and have already watched more movies “pregaming” then I did all last May.

I think the time is right because it’s the actually half way point and we’re mostly all shut in with no sports or other pasttimes happening. And yeah, I think my “pregaming” and really ridiculous “scheduling” for April has been a good distraction helping keep me sane through a bad time.

If it’s not I’ll just whine a little to myself and watch some movies in April “alone” and wait for May hoping by then I can leave the house or have other distractions like the game coming out I’m definitely gonna be playing a bunch in May.

Just finished up Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure, and it wasn't bad. It wasn't as good as The Pulse (of course not many movies are, that's not a fair bar) but it's got a slow burn thing that sneaks up on you in a similar way. There's a somewhat dreamlike quality to a lot of what's happening which really helps the atmosphere. Most of it plays out largely like a police procedural or a thriller rather than a traditional horror movie, but there's a feeling of dread and oppressiveness over everything that increases throughout and leads up to a really great ending. It has some similar threads to Koji Shiraishi's Impossibility Defense, but executed much better. Really a solid movie, and anyone looking for anything in the vein of Seven or maybe even Silence of the Lambs would probably enjoy this.

One of my favourite horror movie scenes is in Pulse where the ghost woman walks slowly down the corridor and then momentarily buckles weirdly under the high-heels. Really creeped me out the way she was trying to just walk normally, almost there, but not quite. Uncanny and felt so wrong! Really enjoyed it.

edit: Jesus, Pulse is almost 20 years old... How did I get so old?

The most striking thing i remember about that movie was the nun who wanted to give mercy to justine even after she became a vampire. The later use of that same nun's body as a weapon was some good metaphor imo.

I'll have to check Creepy then. And I can understand that it may not hit everyone the same but initially I was actually kinda lukewarm on Pulse but it just stuck with me. I'd be sitting around and start thinking about it and it's whole oppressive dread and hopelessness and emptiness. I also liked that it didn't look like the stereotypical Japanese movie-instead of the densely populated areas, large buildings, shrines, etc you got to see kind of urban ruin and it made everything just more grimy and depressing.

But that said Cure was still really good and I do recommend it (and heck over time it may overtake Pulse, since I didn't love that instantly). And I really have to say again how much I loved the ending, especially when so many movies don't seem to stick that part. It's basically perfect for the tone of the movie.

edit-also I'd be up for an April move fest. Various things have kept me from finishing the last two attempts and I'd like to get rid of this avatar sometime.

They were going the way of the arcade for a long while, but this plague seals the deal on the big chains.

There simply isn't a good movie experience to be had there if you truly love cinema.

Annoying children, garbage left everywhere, amazing rudeness, the scene has changed through the years and for the worse!

I'll only watch a movie in public if it's in a small venue with an agreeable audience. Alamo Drafthouse is a shining example of how the scene should continue to live.

But just wait for the DVD if you've any real interest in experiencing a movie. The crowd can destroy the experience just as much as it can make it.

i think if this were to be redone, you would shoot three different layers, one being the back plate of the flames to get a clean rotation, a plate of the skull melting and then a plate of the foreground flames. Have the last 10 frames of each flame layer slower going down in opacity until the loop restarts and an increasing opacity. flames are tough tho unless you're rendering your own effects version.
