There simply isn't a good movie experience to be had there if you truly love cinema.

Annoying children, garbage left everywhere, amazing rudeness, the scene has changed through the years and for the worse!

I'll only watch a movie in public if it's in a small venue with an agreeable audience. Alamo Drafthouse is a shining example of how the scene should continue to live.

But just wait for the DVD if you've any real interest in experiencing a movie. The crowd can destroy the experience just as much as it can make it.

That's why, if you're fortunate enough to have one in your city, you should take the extra time to watch movies with a local indie theater.

I love and miss my indie theater. :( They say they're going to show Possession when they open their doors again.

I like my indie theater but they don’t show anything I’m really interested in. At least in the non repertory sense.

They refurbished it and added some super nice seats.

No beer tho which is a travesty

Good Lord, what theaters are you going to? The one I go to cleans each theater room after a showing, and has a cut off time when children can't go in a R rated film with parent/guardian.

I've noticed that people are a whole lot worse about checking their phones during movies lately but even that wouldn't sour me on the theatre experience. I miss it so much.

Yeah, I can't say I've ever had any theater experience especially bad. The worst consistent theme in theaters that I know is sticky floors or the flip side of bathrooms that stick so much of ammonia that I can barely breath. I'm not a huge fan of the theater experience but mostly just for the cost, crowds, comfort stuff. I used to love going to $5 theaters with friends on afternoons where you'd have small crowds. And yeah, small indie theaters are still usually kind of fun even if I don't have any I know of locally.

Still I saw Snakes on a Plane in a theater and I can't imagine a single better way to experience that thing.

It is guaranteed to be lazy, ignorant, and/or uninformed.
Even the worst horror movie ever made seen with a packed audience on opening night can be a good experience. Packed theaters with jump scares are why horror movies were made.

I hate watching horror in a theater though, because my favorite horror is all about tension and having a crowd of people around you just kills that for me. I need to be alone, in a pitch black house, with no ambient noise. That's my ideal horror viewing experience.

But obviously that just speaks to my tastes as some stuff obviously is more "audience participation".

I looked through the last several pages and didn't find this mentioned here (sorry if it's a repost!) but SXSW put up their short film selections from the festival online.

The short film Regret, which won the Grand Jury Prize in the Midnight section, is very spooky and worth seeing!

Definitely. I just haven’t had any luck personally with crowds. My job is on the weekends so if I get to the theater after work it’s pretty empty and those who are there are kinda poo poo. They either talk or cough or something annoying if it’s a non Alamo theater.

Compiled some COVID-19 found footage from twitter/youtube. General thrust is in the title. Contains one clip with covered dead bodies seen from afar. Maybe don't watch if you're in a bad way mentally because of this poo poo, but at the same time, I'm kind of proud of it.

drat, this annoying thing keeps happening with Kanopy. I find a bunch of movies I want to watch. They're a part of the Criterion Collection and they're clearly available to me with the play/rent button right there. I set out to watch them in October/May/April as a center of my challenge. Then like a day before when I go to rent them they're no longer available to me. Keeps happening. This time it was Eraserhead, Sisters, and Cronos - all films I've wanted to see for a long time but they keep escaping from my grasp. This is at least the second time this very thing has happened with me with Cronos on Kanopy.

I don't understand what the relationship with Kanopy and Criterion is but I think the lesson I'm learning is that when I see a movie on Kanopy I want to see and its got "Criterion Collection" on it I need to watch ASAP! That or subscribe to Criterion.

Just a fun excuse to watch lots of horror movies "together" and write reviews half way to the October Challenge. October Challenge is whatever you want but traditionally 31 movies so April/May is whatever you want but traditionally 13.

They closed the casino until the end of April. I'm going to have to record movies with OBS and then cut out the nudity. That is now the only option. Might as well splice in fake commercials and go all out. Fun isolation project. gently caress. Gonna do a SFW cut of Mandy.

When I was younger, the local TV station recut Pulp Fiction to be SFW so it could air in primetime. That was something else, they'd even redubbed "do/done" over every instance of "gently caress"....

I use it as a way to watch more new-to-me stuff than I would in October. Halloween season just has so much nostalgia attached to it and I have like 20-30 movies I must watch so it's hard to fit in a lot of new horror.

I also don't watch a ton of horror in general in the months after October so the halfway marathon is a good way to catch up.
