down the street from my parents house is a table set up with free lunches available to anyone. very little food has gone to waste, maybe 2 or 3 bags left at the end of the day, and our community has been great with making sure it’s replenished on a daily basis today my brother and i helped my mom with making these lunches. mask on, gloves on, and even sanitizing the laundry basket beforehand |

The federal ministry of health along with experts from the Robert-Koch-Institute (German CDC) officially announced that we managed to reduce the basic reproductive rate R0 to 1. That means one infected person statistically only manages to infect one other person, down from the natural 3 to 4. That is a tremendous success as this means we were able to massively slow down the rate of infection on a federal level in Germany, a country with 85 million people, via self controlling, policies and active politicians that listen to scientists and act based on their expertise. If the r0 number can be decreased further to below 1, this means that qua definition the local epidemic is under control and is a step closer to being over. It's still a long way to go, but if you wonder if you, your actions and the precautions you take actually matter in a rich, industrialized and urbanized society with many millions of people living close together matter: Yes, you and they do matter. Stay strong.

That's awesome. I'm so curious to see all the retrospective studies of things like r0 changes over time, by region, by policy, etc. It's hard to estimate the moment of. Also when antibody tests show us how much of the population had it vs how many we thought had it, I wonder what that will do to our understanding of the reproductive rate |

I am heartened by this, and there was in fact a good article in today's new york times about germany's relative success in this matter. however, seeing successes inevitably leads one to identify dysfunctions elsewhere that have led to worse results and that is . . . frustrating, to say the least. especially when neither leadership nor a large portion of the public are willing to acknowledge those dysfunctions, let alone seek to remedy them. but I urge germany to keep up its work in this connection, not only for the sake of its people but also as a counter to narratives that are, quite frankly, forms of gaslighting. I'm refraining from being specific as per our guidelines but I trust that people generally understand, implicitly, what I'm talking about.

Yeah. That's the absolute best I could do as a reply, without violating the peace and harmony of the Yob and our rules. But hey, Delaware just OK'd MMJ card holders being able to get weed delivered from our 6 dispensaries that are no where near me, and that's a step toward home cultivation, so yay the First State! I don't drive, my agorophobia/anxiety greatly manifests itself when I'm confronted with driving, so I always had to get a ride from someone which I always hated. Our dispensary selections are kinda lame (I can get better stuff from friends, who get THEIR stuff from other states) so to be fair they aren't worth the trip it took to get it, especially with weight limit requirements and silly restrictions other states didn't have. It will certainly benefit many others, though. I want to be legally able to grow my own. I'm pretty good at it... https://i.imgur.com/QKTkerO.mp4 |

The good thing is it won't be as bad as people were saying because people listened (although not everyone listened.) The bad thing is it won't be as bad as people were saying, giving people a false sense of the reality of the situation and causing the foolish to say it wasn't going to be a big deal in the first place. I am actually amazed how much global society complied and tried to do the right thing, even if the usual suspects were hard at work to undermine the best efforts of good people. I am optimistic that in the end, this will be a net positive for humanity and we will have a better plan in the future should this happen again (and it WILL happen again). Let's hope history is a great reminder for our future selves, regardless of how sooner or later it happens https://i.imgur.com/QKTkerO.mp4 |

I'm not giving any odds on how likely that is (because that would probably be depressing), it's just what I'm hoping.

Looking like Tokyo and Osaka are going into lockdown soon. Lots of places are shuttering. I came into work today and my boss was like "You aren't scheduled to be here until the 14th." So that's neat. Now I have time to take care of tax stuff and clean my apartment. Also cook. I'm thinking I should order a case of craft beer from a local store tonight. |
