I mean, subs are better for folks with aural impairments, and dubs are better for folks with visual impairments. Only having one or the other (or having one be markedly low-quality) will lock people out.

The Tower of Latria is so great and when I hit the tribute area in DS3, I was pretty dang disappointed because it lacked the essential sounds of 3-1 that made it so atmospheric, like the evening crickets and the ominous bell-ringing of the squids. (The gimmick of the DS3 jailers also leaned a bit to far into "gently caress you" territory over the DeS equivalent imo.)

I do have to wonder how people with dyslexia deal with everything being subtitled, though. I think there are some accessibility options they can use, but I haven't looked into it.
Growing up with subs on the TV is how I self-taught most of my English, I was I'd say a good 50-60% towards speaking it fluently by the time I first got English at school (Age 11, now they start earlier) and never had to study for an English exam. I'm sure I still make some mistakes even now (Least I know my good <> well and then <> than), it's not my native language after all but I'd say since I was 14 I just spoke it naturally without thinking about it.

That said if you have less/little experience with watching subbed TV you kinda need to get used to it at first, after a while you don't notice it at all; and I think it differs from person to person irregardless how noticeable it is.

I mean, it is kinda funny that these subs conversations end up with non-Anglophones just going "...I mean, we manage to split our attention just fine". It's for sure an acquired skill.

Brazil has a pretty big and honestly, pretty good dubbing industry. We don't have many people that are proficient in English and for a long time we've had pretty high levels of illiteracy/low reading skills, so there was a demand for dubs of all kinds. Even as subbed movies became more popular, the demand still exists, especially for children and YA content. I know a lot of people that will watch live-action movies only if they are subbed, but feel weird watching any sort of animation that isn't dubbed.

Honestly, comparing old Brazilian anime dubs to American ones, I kiiiinda understand why some people have this strong "subs-only" stance, because...your dubs kinda sucked? Like, we had some atrocious voice acting too at times but overall it was on par with USA cartoon voice acting. Nowadays American dubs are pretty solid, and it's great to have the option to fire up an anime on Netflix while you play a game or something - I watched Beastars' American dub because I liked the VAs better than the Brazilian ones and it was perfectly fine.

To be fair, anglophone countries are also ones where most foreign language stuff is subbed. It's mostly people who watch a lot of anime but rarely any non-English live action films who are attached to dubs.

It's been interesting to watch the dub industry advance because when it started they were getting pretty much anybody who could fog a mirror with some acting experience which doesn't equate to being a skilled voice actor, and even more so they had no skilled vocal directors. The people who worked on the original dub for Evangelion at ADV have said that pretty much their only direction was to match the mouth flaps and be loud. No, louder. And then you had the 90's boom where everybody and their mother was scrambling to dub everything so you even got people with less experience working on it. Fun times. I still remember the stories of people packing into a convention hall to watch the new at the time Bubblegum Crisis dub which was exceptionally dire even for the time and how the hall had about emptied by the time it was over.

One more really good dub that never gets talked about now is You're Under Arrest! a show about two woman police officers from the Oh! My Goddess creator that nobody remembers much now, but is still really good.

As a longtime anime-liker it was really interesting to see Parasite win Best Picture and suddenly an entirely different subset of people starting talking about dubs vs subs in a way that they never had to do before. It was basically a lot like early 2000s anime arguments on the matter, haha. What a time capsule.

TN Note: "Maclunkey" can roughly be interpreted to mean "this will be the end of you" but it has a transient special meaning beyond a simple threat of death that the english language is simply unable to convey. For this reason we have chosen to keep the term "Maclunkey" untranslated in all subtitles as trying to put the word into english diminishes its significance. Our team stands by this decision. Keep flooding the discussion page with complaints about this all you want, they will all be ignored.

If it's really been a surge in the past decade, Supernatural is probably more to blame for that.

I doubt the Sailor Moon dubbers considered the implications of turning the canon gay sailor scouts into cousins beyond "poo poo... poo poo, can't let the parents see this show aimed at kids in the 90s is full of queers!"
