AMC is refusing to show Universal movies because they shared that news, lmao. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/amc-theatres-refuses-play-universal-films-wake-trolls-world-tour-1292327

I don't think Trolls' success is really so noteworthy - as just noted by others, I think kids' movies stand to gain the most from instant VOD, and that's still $100 million over the course of three weeks, a take considered mediocre-to-bad for a theater. Even without overhead I don't think that's that big of a triumph.

Per the full WSJ article, the comparable number is the US take, about $150 mil, and Universal took 80% of the VOD, versus I think 50% of theatrical?

Either way, this made more for Universal, and now they want more of it.

if AMC refuses to show one of the biggest studio's movies they won't be showing anything soon after because they're already teetering on the edge of bankruptcy

Lot of possibilities, not saying it's the way to go forward but rolling out something that drastic would take so many executive sign-offs and none of them individually would want to stake their career on it working.

I'd be interested in seeing numbers for The Hunt because that might be the best barometer for the success of VOD. It was briefly in theatres before the pandemic, and horror movie box office returns tend to be front-loaded. It brought in $5.8 million during its theatrical run and based on its reception I would expect it would have made about $12-16 million overall. If it could meet or exceed this then it would indicate that viewing habits are changing.

You’d have to also know what the VOD numbers were going to be had it stayed in theatres, if that has an effect on physical/digital sales later, etc

Cool, we can have more movies critical of the military establishment.

Also, having the military involvement matters less and less as visual effects takes over cinema. Who cares if you had to sacrifice the directorial and editorial control to get a platoon of M1A2 Abrams tanks for a scene, because you can have a visual effects studio whip up an armored division for you and keep your vision unmolested by the military brass.

I'm not sure there's an appropriate replacement for Rip Torn as Zeus, sadly. On the other hand, Danny Devito can reprise his role as Phil just by being dressed up in horrifying CATS-esque CGI, so that's a plus.
