I didn't even know there was a book 3.

If Ben Dever's involved then the chances of being able to buy any of them any time soon seem remote. I'm becoming more and more frustrated with the release schedule of the old books on his new website and with the fact that he seems to be putting them out totally at random. Why start with book 24? Why has he been hyping up a bonus adventure that is the fourth part of a series when you currently cannot get any of the previous chapters from any source: official, legal or otherwise? And I've asked him about ebooks and been told that they're planned for the future but apparently he can't/won't say when. So the only way for me to get anything he puts out is to have a physical hardcover edition shipped across the world at exorbitant cost, and I can't even start from the beginning because all that's available are books 23, 24, 25 and 30.

What I'd really like is a digital compilation of all the special edition bonus adventures, because that's the stuff I'm missing, but even just digital editions of the actual special editions themselves (in order and from the beginning) would be a huge advantage over what's available now or likely to be available within any kind of reasonable timeframe.

Anyway, let's shoot someone.

While the Drakkar looks for a victim among the fighters, you take aim at him. He does not suspect the threat. Without waiting for him to see you, you fire your own arrow. It drills into his middle chest. You clearly see his eyes roll back.

Then his body falls from the column and shatters in the middle of the ruins with a muffled thump.

You watch the melee around you to find another perfidious villain. No other archer stands out, but you see the Drakkarim leader in the background, accompanied by one of his men. They are pointing at you while speaking hateful words you cannot hear. You have clearly been recognized. The subordinate Drakkar starts running in your direction.

The Wildlands Hunt posted:

You scream in desperation, already convinced that Athania cannot escape her fate. But you are discounting her keenly trained warrior reflexes. The moment Balazar’s blade nears the back of her neck, she ducks left. The blade sears her left shoulder and draws a cry of pain from her, but Balazar loses his balance and falls on his knees. As he stands and watches you run towards him, a swarm of imprecations flow from his hips.

“You, Kai girl! Naar take all the gold, I’ll cut your throat!”

Those are the last words to resonate from him as his head is separated from his shoulders in an elegant scarlet burst. Athania is standing behind him, her own bloodied sword held horizontally. “Never turn your back on me,” she says, an icy glare shining in her steel blue eyes.

When the young captain comes to meet you, you notice her hand and voice are slightly trembling.

“I owe you my life, Autumn Snow. Without you...!”

Her eyes wander to Balazar’s corpse, the man who almost killed her. It’s all over now: the man with the golden eyepatch will never again be selling slaves. With their leader dead, the last of the Ragadornian traffickers have surrendered.

The Giaks and Drakkarim who did not flee have perished, and there are no more traces of the sinister Red Masks.

When you point that detail out to Athania, she again points to Balazar’s remains.

“The one who hired them is dead. We won’t hear from them again.”

The surviving Valkharim have assembled to tie up and watch over the bandits and mercenaries taken prisoner. Of the ten men that left Ragadorn, only five have survived: lieutenant Flasher is among them, but sergeant Draegar is dead, the last of the Red Masks’ victims today. A Gnadurn-poisoned dart ended his days.

“Our work is done, Athania says sombrely. Let’s head back to Ragadorn and inform Overlord Valkhar. I don’t want to stay in these damned ruins one more minute.”

Even as she is speaking these words, a shadow flies before the moon and hoarse cawing tears through the night.

You raise your eyes and spot with horror the massive emaciated shape of a Zlanbeast.

On its back sits the feather-helmed Drakkar.

“Hear me, Kai girl!” he yells into the night. “This day victory is yours, but I shall have my revenge. My name is Morok Torg! By your hand, my brother Darak died in the Kirlundin Isles. You have a blood debt to me! Wherever you go, I’ll find you! You belong to me until the end of time! Hear me! Your head is mine! MINE!”

Punctuating this hateful speech with its infuriating cry, the Zlanbeast swoops away in the Wildlands night sky.

You can only watch it fly away, thinking of Morok Torg’s promise of vengeance.

You have not forgotten the other promise he made you without knowing it – the one of finding your Kai Master, Silver Flame, alive!

EPILOGUE

The trip back to Ragadorn takes two and a half days.

You roll on board the carts Balazar used to carry his slave cargo to Nezhuur, with a slight difference: the wild beast cages now hold the captured mercenaries and traders, while the slaves sit in the carts as free men and women.

The third cart carries the bodies of Draegar and the other Valkharim fallen in battle.

“Ragadorn!” Athania calls out in the evening of third day, pointing to the city ramparts ahead. Relief is obvious in her voice. You have no difficulty guessing she never wants to set foot in the ruins of Nezhuur again.

One-by-one, the carts enter through the Dorn Gate, following by the twelve horses of your team.

A fresh group of Valkharim soldiers are awaiting you in the city. Their insignias identify them as the Overlord’s personal guard. At their head stands a pretentious herald in flamboyant garb.

“Overlord Valkhar requests a meeting with you,” he proclaims speaking to Athania and yourself. She respectfully bows.

“Thankfully, we bring good news,” she whispers to you in an aside.

Escorted by the Valkharim, you follow Warehouses Street up to the Bridge Esplanade. After crossing the Ragadorn Bridge, you enter the Eastern Quarter of the city.

You then reach the most beautiful district of the city, Fortress Quarter, where Castle Crairg rises, the residence of the Ragadorn Overlords.

As soon as you are inside Valkhar’s palace, you notice the contrast between the ostentatious luxury of this place and the endemic poverty of Ragadorn.

While captain Athania is led before the Overlord, you are made to wait in a chamber decorated with portraits of ancient Ragadorn Overlords, from Kalkarm to Killean. Lachlan is conspicuously missing.

After ten or so minutes, the flamboyant herald enters the room.

“Overlord Valkhar will now see you,” he pompously serves.

Rare few people outside of Ragadorn have had the opportunity to access the Overlord’s throne room. It is a special favour being granted to you.

When you enter, Valkhar in person greets you with open arms.

“Ah! The Kai Lady from Sommerlund, thanks to which I am now rid of that villain Balazar! May the desert dogs gnaw at his bones! Athania tells me you are called Autumn Snow and you saved her life. Know this, child of Kai, that Overlord Valkhar is never thankless, and he now considers owing you a debt. Ask what you wish, and if it is within my considerable means, it shall be granted.”

Only one answer springs to mind.

“I would appreciate your help in rescuing my Kai Master, Silver Flame, still at the hands of the Drakkarim, somewhere in the Maakenmire Swamp. Alone, my chances of success would be few, but with the support that a Lord of your influence can provide, I sense I can succeed – and thereby prevent Morok Torg and his allies from achieving their goals.”

Valkar listens to your request with amazement. When he answers, he cannot hide the hint of admiration in his voice.

“Would that all my men were as devoted to me as you are to your master, Autumn Snow. I shall help you: in fact, I think you already have an ally in this room.”

He points to Athania, who was listening in silence and now lays a hand on your shoulder.

“I owe you my life, and I intend to pay that debt in full. Let me handle everything. I’ll go with you, and together, I swear we’ll pull Silver Flame from those Drakkarim hands.”

If you have the courage of a true Kai Lady, do not miss the next adventure in the Autumn Snow series, entitled: SLAVES OF THE MIRE

Well, I liked that. If the rest ever become available in English I'll definitely read them. That said, there's not really much plot to this one so I find myself largely unable to remember what happened in it, but there were plenty of decisions to make and the challenge level seemed pretty good.

There is, theoretically, still another Lone Wolf book coming out later this year, and there are more bonus adventures to play as well, so we're not out of material yet and the thread will continue. Next up: Dawn of the Darklords.
