You know those old, old webtoys where you had a bunch of pink pixels running around a grid of lines, and a green pixel would go around turning them green? I don't even remember what the hell they're called, but Atom Zombie Smasher takes those and makes an RTS out of them. You have to use your rescue chopper to airlift out as many people in an area as possible before everyone left gets zombied--or if possible, kill all the zombies. You get combat units to help fight them off including infantry squads that move around the streets, snipers that cover a narrow cone across the map, zombie bait, mines, barricades, and most importantly, rooftop artillery cannons. Learn to love your artillery cannons.

Campaigns are score-based with a set amount of points for final victory. You score points for rescues and kills, and Team Zombie scores points for spreading the infection. The strategic layer has a fair amount in common with XCOM--random mission modifiers, scientists to rescue for upgrade points, zombies spreading from district to district, a bunch of campaign start modifiers to adjust length and difficulty, etc.

Yeah okay gimme gimme, thanks!

It goes so well with the between mission comic book cutscenes, too.
It’s a weird game but so fun. Make sure you pick the mutator they added that guarantees you an offensive unit, at least until you know the game. At release you could have a campaign get boned because it would start you with random units and sometimes you wouldn’t have anything that could kill zombies.

Nope!

There's a bit towards the end where you can go back to any time period from earlier chapters, so there's nothing you can miss permanently.

Umineko: it's taken me at least a year to read the first three hours, which is testament to... something. The opening is extremely slow paced. But damnit, I did it. I made it to the second day, and something big is about to happen that will hopefully hold my attention better. I've been curious about this VN for literally years and I want to know why it's so well regarded, especially if you like mysteries.

Atom Zombie Smasher: I love the music and presentation but something about the gameplay feels lacking? I wish it were possible to rescue 100% of the civilians, but no. I walk away from every mission feeling like I've failed, and that's extremely unsatisfying, even if the game is all "good job!"

(The second half is on sale for 15$ but this game is super super long so don't get it until you need it. Unless you're like me and need a whole thing before you can begin.)

I got to a point where I had to kill 4 robots in order to proceed, after struggling heavily with one. After spending about 40 minutes walking very slowly and doing nothing I got pretty drat bored (about Generation Zero). well neither art looks flat, tbh

Also holy poo poo everyone go by Retrowave for a buck fifty. It's basically like playing an album cover for a synthwave band in an arcade driving/score attack format. Very very simple and early access at the moment, but given the number of "not sure if legally distinct enough from registered copyright" poo poo currently in the game, might as well snatch it up while you can. Soundtrack is dope as hell.

Ace Combat and Metal Gear Solid both scratch an incredibly specific itch for me of having plots & world design that's just campy enough to be enjoyably dumb but own it enough that they can pull off serious dramatic moments without being out of place

Ace Combat 7 is an absolutely blast, highly recommend you give it a go!
