You guys recall when Chris Christee's political appointees shut down the Ft. Lee lanes on the GW Bridge to punish the mayor? For those that didn't keep up, one pleaded guilty to conspiracy and flipped on the rest, while the others went to trial and were convicted of wire fraud and defrauding federal programs. The circuit court upheld. The SCOTUS unanimously today overturned because the federal statutes specifically require that the people sought "property" of some sort, and the government failed to show that any was taken. The government argued at trial and on appeal that the property obtained was the actual bridge itself as the conspirators had commandeered control and the port authority's wages for the people it had to pay to do this. Previous precedent states that neither of those fit a legal definition of property, and without the goal of some property obtained, there is no crime. Essentially, corrupt government officials can ask you for a favor (a political endorsement), and if you refuse, punish you with whatever they want (like gridlocking your entire city for four days), and it isn't a crime because they got nothing in return.

So, what's the threshold for acknowledging that conservatives are taking a wrecking ball to this country and something like a civil war round 2 happening? Like how many presidential elections need to be lost despite securing the popular vote? How many 5-4 Supreme Court decisions? November needs to come and go already.

It won't ever be acknowledged, unless a real progressive movemwnt comes through. But the DNC seems to be hellbent on ensuring their legacy is that doesn't happen so as long as their top echelons are well off; they'll go with whatever the GOP does as a token second party Also civil war means nukes get used on Americans for sure

Mustang posted:So, what's the threshold for acknowledging that conservatives are taking a wrecking ball to this country and something like a civil war round 2 happening? The quality of life will have to drop to something completely unrecognizable to a massive percentage of the country. That's not happening, and barring something a lot worse than COVID or a couple of earthquakes, it's not happening in our lifetimes. Healthcare is probably the most influential issue on the most people in the US, and it barely moves the loving needle in political results. Nobody gives a gently caress about the DOJ getting leaned on.

joat mon posted:To what halcyon year shall we return, when presidential elections were determined by popular vote and there were no 5-4 Supreme Court decisions? Who cares? Presidential elections SHOULD be determined by popular vote and partisan 5-4 decisions by the Supreme Court just further erode it's legitimacy, especially with guys like Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. And I wasn't asking this specifically because of the DOJ dropping the flynn case, it's more because of how exhausting it is to wake up every day and there's always something Republicans are doing to destroy this country. Getting tired of seeing Republicans sowing, I want to see them reaping.
