I don't think!
Hey all! I have been trying to get back into playing the saxophone recently. I would love to make some progress on learning how to play by ear, and learn some new songs.

To start, i would like to open the thread to requests for songs. I am working the next 3 days so won't be able to work on this until Sunday, so I'd like to leave it open till then, and choose a song Sunday. Then I'll have one day before I go back to work so I can update the thread then.

I don't mean to be one of those people that says they like all types of music but i do have pretty eclectic tastes. So any request is welcomed from any musical genre!

Thanks for checking out my saxophone zone. :sax:

i played alto sax in highschool and remember transcribing and playing the opening to Dammit by Blink 182 so that is my request. I remember it being lame to play but I was also very bad!

All the cool kids played sax in school. It was the chillest marching band section.

I played tenor. The one I had in HS was donated by an alumni's family and was super nice. It was a pretty obscure French brand so it took a lot of effort to figure out just what it was. Anyway a few years back I see someone in the US selling the exact model on ebay! I knew it so well, as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one. Now it lives in my storage locker. One day I'll live somewhere that I can practice it without annoying my neighbors, ie not a flat or apartment.

I have a Yanagisawa alto from like the 70s or something

Escape From Noise

Sax...is my axe!

Escape From Noise

The only other sax song I can think of is Jazz Man by Bleeding Gums Murphy from his album Sax On the Beach. From the Simpsons.

Jaguars!

I'd love to hear a little bit of Outlook for Thursday by DD smash. Like maybe a 1980s australasian regional hit shouldn't be your main effort but it sounds like it'd be fun to play and not too hard?

Here is a short list of good sax songs I can come up with of the top of my head.

Boomtown by Mark Knopfler

Ian Drury What a Waste

Logical Song by Supertramp

Solo to money by pink floyd

The Tommy McCook version of Ode to Billy Joe

Wasted Days by the slackers

Happy Saxing!

OP have you ever listened to Lonnie Liston Smith? some great sax playing on his records!!

Edit- ok I got the itch to play a little tonight. The creative competition thread says to show ever step of the way so... I recorded this.

Not too horrendous for having not played regularly in like 5 years but I'd need to workshop it. I just recorded this with my phone and I didn't wanna bother looking presentable so i just recorded the couch cushion and the audio. My sound is ok but it'll improve once I play more. The technical stuff, I'm not great at anymore but I remembered this well enough to play it a bit.

I did another one. This one I'm reading from sheet music. I'm better at reading music than i am playing by ear. I used to be able to sight read.

Still off to a bit of a crummy start but I warmed into it. I need to stop stopping when I mess up it's a bad habit. Oh and you can hear me yell at the dog halfway through because he decided he needed to lift the couch cushion for some reason (probably to get something he hid under there).

Lol jk I looked up my horns serial number and I think it was made in 1991. Oops i misremembered. It looks old. It's not as old as me though.
Come to think of it I've never named her. Do musicians really do that? I never knew of any of my band friends naming their horns but I've heard of it from books and tv. I remember David Sedaris' guitar teacher telling him he had to name his guitar after a girl.

My sax in HS was called gator, but I didn't name it that, that was what everyone called it. It had a faux(?) alligator skin case. My gator is in a modern travel case, but it's still gator.

One of my fave songs on sax was I Remember Clifford, which is a trumpet song mainly, but the backing horns are lovely and in our band I had a solo following the trumpet solo. Also it's easy to play the lead on tenor too, because they're both b-flat instruments. Also it's just a beautiful song.

And very much different to that, we did an instrumental arrangement of Vehicle by the Ides of March which was absolutely awesome. Had an alto and tenor solo in it.

The only thing with some of the songs posted is they have altissimo register which I haven't really learned to do. So if you hear it being really high pitched, i can't do those notes. Just a nota bene for readers that may want to suggest something :)

Escape From Noise

Don't almost all of the songs on Mr. Bungle's self titled album have sax parts? I guess they're tenor, which might be an issue. Naked City has alto sax it looks like. That might have a lot of those high pitched parts though

Owns

Thanks for the feedback guys! I was honestly a little nervous playing to be recorded, i didn't get recorded that much in the past.

The most nervous I've ever been about playing was in high school when I had to audition for all state jazz band and it was not in person it was just me standingin a room being recorded for people to closely judge and listen to. I was mortified. I got first chair alto though!
