Zero Time Dilemma

The Zero Escape trilogy has a bit of an odd history. The first game, 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (999) was released in 2009 and intended to stand alone, but got enough critical acclaim that a sequel was announced a couple years later. That game, Virtue's Last Reward (VLR), released in 2012 and turned the original game into the opener of a trilogy. While it also received high reviews, VLR sold so poorly in Japan that the third game was put on hold for awhile. As the plot for VLR leaves a pretty big hook for the third game, the fanbase was rather disappointed and managed to raise enough of an uproar that Zero Time Dilemma (ZTD), the conclusion to the trilogy, resumed development in 2015 and was released a year later.

As ZTD is the third game in the trilogy, there will be spoilers for 999 and VLR in this LP. I'll go over what you need to know for this LP, but as these are essentially mystery games, you're doing yourself a dis-service is you don't experience them for yourself. There's a bundle for both games on Steam, or you can read the fantastic LPs that introduced me to the trilogy:

Like the first two games in the series, Zero Time Dilemma was developed by Spike Chunsoft (only this time via the Chime studio) and directed by Kotaro Uchikoshi. Technically the first two games were developed by Chunsoft before the merger with Spike, but that's business for you. The game is a mix of visual novel-style cutscenes and escape room puzzles, but the plot gets pretty out there.

Unlike the first two games in the series, Zero Time Dilemma has animated cutscenes instead of talking portraits. The animations...aren't great, so I won't be showing most of them off. The voice acting is a bit better, but not enough for me to try and make videos of solving puzzles seem interesting. This LP will be screenshot format. Yes, I know there's a lot of dialogue. Wish me luck.

Ground-rules for the LP:
  1. Absolutely NO spoilers for this game, even in tags. No hints or fake speculation, either. The plot for the previous games, you're free to talk about, even outside spoiler tags. I warned everyone for a reason!
  2. The plot has some branches to it, so I'll be leaving every decision I can up to the audience. Be gentle.
  3. The puzzle rooms have a lot of flavor text to them. I'll show off as much as I can but if I miss something feel free to point it out after the room is complete.

Part 1: Coincide

Welcome to Zero Time Dilemma. Let's see what this game is all about.



Music: Dcom (The Beginning)



We kick things off out in the desert. If you have any familiarity at all with VLR, you'll probably be expecting this game to take place during a certain often-referenced event in between the first two games. And you'd be right. Kind of.



No, I'm not going to show an image for every line of dialogue. We'd be here for years. But I'll show more in the first couple updates, at least.



This guy's the one who was speaking. We don't really know who he is yet, but we do get some confirmation on the current date. Assuming the game isn't lying to us. Not shown: Mystery man blinking while the camera slowly rotates. You're really not missing much with these animations.



Behind mystery man #1 is a returning character, though you may not recognize her new model. Also pictured: a mystery device on mystery man's wrist.



Cut to another returning character here. I'll attach names to everyone's faces soon, I promise. But the opening scene is really meant to convey confusion, to prepare the player for the rest of the game.



I agree, mystery voice #2.



The previous line was from the dude pictured here. The lady in the background with the questionable outfit spoke the current line.

I may pick on the animations but I do love the expressions and poses they put the characters in for each scene.

That's a somewhat dark spin on the butterfly effect, but okay.

I'm not talking about all the quantum bullshit this series has, that's the central conceit and so it gets an automatic pass.

Yes, I'm still calling bullshit about where Virtue's Last Reward was located. Radical-6 CANNOT explain it away.


E: I'll enjoy the writing and the insanity, but there's no way the narrative will play fair with the reader.

I'm onboard. Hopefully this LP will go places. I played VLR but bounced off 999 on the 3DS and never picked this up. I'm curious to see where this goes.

Oh hell yes. I've never played any of the games because I feel like I'd hate the puzzle sections, but drat were the LP's top-tier and wild. Looking forward to seeing how off the rails this goes.

They say money can't buy happiness, but it sure does help.
Zero Time Dilemma is a very... special game. It's definitely not the series' best. It has missteps. The animation work is comically nothing. But it's just :allears: all the time.

I look forward to enjoying the blind posting.

Curses! Foiled again!


I always liked this game's visual style, actually. But that's probably because it seems like such a relief after VLR's super colourful and cartoony stuff (like Pebbles Flintstone) looked so out of place.

Sometimes neither is an option! But in this case I let it sit there about a half hour while messing around with the recorded video and nothing happened.

Part 2: Payoff

Previously, on Zero Time Dilemma...



A psycho in a plague mask has apparently taken a group of unknown people captive. He'll let them go, if we can guess a coin flip correctly....

There's a fast-forward icon on the lower-right because we can skip scenes that we've already seen. That'll probably come in handy later.





I have a good feeling about blue! You guys wouldn't steer me wrong, right?



You'll see this graphic a lot, too. Choices have consequences here.

If you had picked red and were correct, the last two lines of dialogue would change to:

Another body drops. Carlos was already mostly on the ground so not sure it would've made that big a sound, but whatever. Having different sound effects is expensive, too, I guess.



Carlos is down, and we get a fade to static before an abrupt change to a black screen. Another common transition between game scenes.

Another shot of Dcom. But this time you can see a tiny crowd of people at the bottom.



It's 12:05 on the same day. Time is probably important in this game.



I have no clue.







Didn't we all have something attached to our left wrists...?



Guess the memory wipe wasn't 100% effective. In fact...

Carlos seems to have a flash of memory himself. But not enough.















Akane just shakes her head.

Hey, uh, could I ask all of you something?





And now we get to spend the rest of the game trying to figure out what just happened.

Music: Interminable Dilemma



Just kidding. Fade to black, and then the credits roll. No seriously, we just won the game.



Five minutes later...



We've reached ending CQD-END:1. Otherwise known as the Sun End. We've won the game, though we haven't really beaten it.



Hitting the back button brings us to a save screen. Why not? Maybe we'll get a New Game Plus option.



Saving reveals the sun icon on our save file. Careful counters will notice the possibility of six other endings. Let's hit the back button again.



Unlike 999 and VLR, where you follow around a single protagonist and mingle with the different characters throughout the game, ZTD separates the characters into three teams, which you play as one at a time.



There are three teams shown, corresponding to the three cells we saw in the last update. C Team, led by Carlos. Q Team, led by...Q? And D Team, led by Diana.



Each team has a number of fragments that can be played, in any order (once they're unlocked).



The only one currently unlocked for each team is the same coin flip one we just played.





The same fragment is in a different location for each team. Just to add to the confusion.



Selecting a fragment shows a mini flowchart of the major points in it. You can jump in to replay at any point that's lit up. Currently highlighted, the scales show where a decision was made. The sun icon returns on the lower right, representing the ending we unlocked. The question marks on the left side show a path not yet taken.



Like in VLR, you can see a global flowchart of how all the scenes fit together. Also like VLR, looking at this flowchart is a good way to spoil yourself once more stuff is unlocked. So I probably won't be showing it much, at least at first.



A more detailed version of the flowchart show's each fragment's flowchart connected together, including ones we haven't seen yet. Lots more decisions in our future.



With nothing else available, we go back to the coin flip decision.



The same scene plays out, and we are once again faced with a decison. Red or blue?

Maybe don't tell us if there's some sort of meta-twist about "playing a game" with peoples lives but I am curious if that coin flip is actually 50/50 or if the game rigs it so you win every time.

I laughed so hard when the game actually let me win instead of a rigged fail. It's a good meta-troll on people who've played the other games, where you don't even get to THINK about escaping until at least ten hours, three metaphysics lectures and two bizarre plot revelations have happened.

The Phi here is the Phi from VLR, with memories of all the events of VLR.

The Akane here is not the Akane from VLR, she doesn't have the same power as Phi and Sigma.

Sigma is NOT the Sigma of VLR (not exactly). Sigma goes through a convoluted time loop where his young self is sent into his older body, goes through the events of VLR, is then sent back to just after Radical-6 is released and helps Akane set up the events of VLR over the next 40(? I think?) years, only to then swap places with his pre-VLR self. This is not the Sigma we knew. This is Doctor Klim. This is Zero Senior.

Technically Phi went through the same time loop as Sigma, but she was in cryogenic sleep the whole time so she doesn't have any extra memories.
