Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
I had to look up what happens in the event of a tie today.

They both come back, as I recall. Unless it's a three way tie for $0, in which case they all go home.

No, they used to do that but now there's a tiebreaker round. Category, Alex reads the question, first one to buzz in and answer right wins.

Huh. I think I'd like it better if they both get to come back. But I guess that's to prevent players from forcing ties for mutual profit.

There was one episode a few years ago (I think it might be in the ones available on Netflix now for some reason? But maybe I'm imagining that?) where all three contestants finished with the exact same amount of money and so all three came back the next day.

It was rare enough an occurrence (like maybe once a season) that I don't think it was monetary so much as the logistics of dealing with having too many contestants on site when there was a tie.

Wasn't there a champion (Chu??) that was intentionally letting weaker players tie him just because he knew he could beat them again, and he had no problem saying that? Or was that just a hypothetical situation that I'm misremembering?

Yep that was Chu, and I'm pretty sure that's the big reason they changed the rule.

He strikes me as an impressively not-great person, but I respect the hustle of people who are this strong at the metagame. I'll take it absolutely any day over the contestants who, staring at a runaway at the end of Double from a distant third, continue ringing in and answering clues instead of giving the second-place person an opportunity to break the lock

A. I can’t speak from playing myself, but the game does move super fast and it can be hard to be doing all the math while focusing on the questions , which is of course more immediate.

B. People are playing for 2nd place too, $2,000 is better than $1,000, although this isn’t that big of a motivator

C. Most importantly : people are playing both to see how they can do and they still want their score to be as high as possible. If a game is close to a run away , I’d rather be at $5,000 than $1,000, and if I’m that far behind it’s super unlikely the leading person is gonna have to bet an amount where I can catch him if said person gets it wrong.

Yeah, I had no idea what the scores were in any of my games except when there was a commercial break or a Daily Double being played. It just moved so fast I was 100% focused on the questions.

What frustrates me is when second place gets the daily double on the very last clue. It's currently a runaway for first place but they can be in the running if they're willing to bet everything they have. Bets almost nothing. Gotta play safe! :downs:

Edit: just watched today’s episode. Third place could have won if he didn’t ring in and let the champion stop a runaway on those last two clues. He was the only one to nail the final. Oh well. It’s a complex strategy game.

I hope I don't sound unempathetic, because I absolutely understand. It's just that what you are describing is literally the difference between someone being extremely good at the metagame and someone not being extremely good at the metagame

Yeah, Chu had a real talent for being able to think about the metagame while still staying focused enough on questions. It's impressive because it's difficult for most contestants.

He also had a talent for being very unlikable :v:

Wait, it was a new episode? I forgot the first 46 times they told me. According to Reddit, there's one more week of regular shows after the teacher's tournament and that's it.

I could've probably lived with James's inhuman inability to smile if there hadn't been those articles where he talked about how he could never imagine working a 9-5 and loves having the freedom to vacation whenever as if us schlubs ENJOY our 9-5 and choose it over the freedom he enjoys.
