Goddamn, Brazil and Mexico both logged in more coronavirus deaths yesterday than the US: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/brazil/ https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/mexico/ Brazil's graph is showing a steady increase so things are going to get way way worse there. Mexico's total suddenly shot up a hell of a lot, it looks like that was due to worldometers finding this tweet and suddenly having to update their running total: https://twitter.com/HLGatell/status/1268337705966096394

Snowglobe of Doom posted:Goddamn, Brazil and Mexico both logged in more coronavirus deaths yesterday than the US: Honestly I wonder if these death numbers even mean anymore seeing how political the reporting has become, and how in many countries there are efforts to hide the real numbers. Here in Belgium more than 40% of the reported deaths happened outside of hospitals (mainly elederly care facilities) and most are not test confirmed, but suspected by doctors. From the start the government decided to be transparent about this but it looks like we are the only country reporting those non tested deaths. That means that you could probably almost double the numbers from other countries and you would be closer to the truth. And that's not even taking into account the fact that some states deliberately hid confirmed case deaths too like in Florida, which would mean it could be even more than that SpaceGoatFarts fucked around with this message at 09:38 on Jun 5, 2020 |

Yeah I was going to add a footnote saying something like "Of course who really knows what the actual numbers were" but I forgot. 'Reported' numbers are a total crapshoot for the most part. (I also did a big post defending Belgium's reporting two days ago )

Snowglobe of Doom posted:Goddamn, Brazil and Mexico both logged in more coronavirus deaths yesterday than the US: I've posted about Mexico's deaths being crazy high before. Still no clear signs why though, we probably won't know for a while. It's kind of worrying but our hospitals are at about 50% occupancy so it might be something like endemic obesity OR people going to the hospital waaay too late. Something to keep in mind is that the daily death count is not actually how many people passed away on that day but rather how many of the recently deceased were confirmed to have covid. They could have died days ago, in a few cases a couple weeks. It's something often explained in the daily conferences where all those numbers are shared with the public but I have no idea how other countries do it. That tweet you quoted does mention 11k deaths with a confirmed covid result and 928 suspected cases (that might later get added to the tally, pending results) so there's definitely a degree of tracking regarding that.

gently caress me. I share a small office with 2 friends that we use to work remotely in our jobs. I haven't been there since mid March but was planning to go back now, riding a bike to evade public transport. Now my one friend tells me she was in Austria last weekend and will go to Sylt (mayor German holiday island ) for a week in July. How do I explain to her that we don't need to bother and can just close the office down for good if she does these kind of things?

The total covid death count in USA is coming close to the number of deaths caused by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima at the end of WW II. It's hard to imagine Japan saying to its people "It's fine, go rebuild and restart the economy. Don't bother with a hazmat suit because the whole radiation sickness thing is overblown by the media."

It's kind of worrying but our hospitals are at about 50% occupancy so it might be something like endemic obesity OR people going to the hospital waaay too late. There are stories, rumors, etc, that in my state is because some people are going too late to the hospital. Like, they get their covid-19 kit and they don't want to use it, they start getting the "I can't breath" symptoms and they don't want to hop in an ambulance. They either die in their homes or are rushed to the ER by their relatives because they are finally going purple. The problem is that once you get to the ER you have to wait up to 8 hours to be admitted. Then there's the bunch of "doctors" giving snake oil cures. And this is in the capital city. People who live in municipalities have it worse, as they don't have as many hospitals as we do, and a lot live in far away and impoverish communities so so they have to do the extra travel.

Where do you guys go to see state-by-state trends? We only have five hospitalizations in our swath of country and my doctor yesterday said that cases are continuing to trend downward in states that opened early. I'd like to see that myself.

Not sure how this headline happens NYC hits hopeful milestone: Zero confirmed coronavirus deaths for first day since March https://www.nydailynews.com/coronavirus/ny-coronavirus-deaths-confirmed-covid-de-blasio-20200604-a5dfx2l6hvgwlll4vou67zrqla-story.html It's being posted and reported everywhere. I think the Post originally posted it and then everyone else just parrots it without checking. Looks like NYC is still having around 70 or so deaths every day so there's no way there were zero deaths in a 24 hour period. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/new-york/

Inept posted:Yeah Alaska sure is uh beating it Well, I was going by the site's categories, but also that spike represents 9 cases per day (assuming I'm reading the chart correctly) and Montana 5--it may be more than previously, but in theory not unmanageable. But like I noted, sparse population probably plays a major role in that.
