Fixed.

Police don't care what anyone outside their circle thinks. They have forgotten who they are supposed to serve, and only serve their own group.

Its basic tribalism. The dark side of 20 years of "band of brothers" crap.

our police carry longarms in their vehicles, but locked, and from memory they have to justify each and every removal from the vehicle

the biggest thing they carry is a taser, it was specific groups that were being armed as a trial and following enormous public pushback, it ain't happening anymore

i'd bet his line about 'we police with the consent of the public' is a dig at american police tbh

That's great news, but really it's just police looking into maintaining their "broad tactical capability." I don't know if skills in probability and statistics would enable one to say that if no more armed police shootings pop up in X days then there's a 99.999% chance there are no unjustifiable police uses of force at all, given how many people are committing crimes?

I thought - and I and others said in here and elsewhere before - that this thread was chill. I was obviously wrong.

Some of us are in high risk categories for Covid-19 and it's great that there are no known cases in some places, and that means restrictions can be eased and life can start heading back on a long path toward normality for most people, but for me it's still a question of: sure, there are no known cases, but how many unknown cases might be out there? How much am I risking my life? Apparently asking this makes me an rear end in a top hat though.

e: I'm not saying I wish everyone else was forced to isolate just because of a few people who are at higher risk. Go out and enjoy some well-earned freedom if/when that is available in your area and the minimal risks are acceptable to you. It's just that the articles I've read don't even mention what "no active cases" might mean for how many unknown cases might be out there.

Don't worry my work started trying to force people into the office early too.

One guy brought up that his mom is still super high risk, and I had to mention I was likely exposed and awaiting results (from the protests).

Like they're still asking me to come in to the office LMAO. Luckily I'm negative right now, but I didn't get an antibody test either, but yeah.

We pissed everyone off by telling management it was stupid and unnecessary in very detailed emails.

That’s way more me poking fun at TF for living in the developed world with a functioning government that executed an effective pandemic strategy, painful though it were, and has an accountable police force than it is calling you out or calling you an rear end in a top hat. I liked seeing the video of an American cop shooting a dude with a knife who wasn't actively threatening, immediately followed by a video of Scottish (?) Police using nunchuks to take down a dude with a knife who was actively trying to go after the cops. They surrounded him, and just pummeled him into submission.

At least one Bay Area department (menlo park) has nunchucks as an option instead of baton. Got a free example on me how effective they are.
This part of the essay ran extremely true for me from my time in academy.

In fact, let me tell you about an extremely formative experience: in my police academy class, we had a clique of around six trainees who routinely bullied and harassed other students: intentionally scuffing another trainee’s shoes to get them in trouble during inspection, sexually harassing female trainees, cracking racist jokes, and so on. Every quarter, we were to write anonymous evaluations of our squadmates. I wrote scathing accounts of their behavior, thinking I was helping keep bad apples out of law enforcement and believing I would be protected. Instead, the academy staff read my complaints to them out loud and outed me to them and never punished them, causing me to get harassed for the rest of my academy class. That’s how I learned that even police leadership hates rats. That’s why no one is “changing things from the inside.” They can’t, the structure won’t allow it.

I was naive to believe that I could have been a positive part of the solution. Instead I’m now grateful I couldn’t get hired from my record of not lying or cheating for my coworkers. Probably saved my soul.

Butter Activities

My dept wasn’t nearly as bad but as another person who was briefly a cop for a few months before going team ACAB I definitely relate.

Like in spite of my dept being relatively professional and by the book it all still applies. The system is insanely broken for the purpose of anything besides the interests of the powerful and anything good that happens is in spite of it.

At least I can tell all the cops on my Facebook fees whining about qualified immunity going away that they’re dipshits with slightly more credibility I guess.
