tardwrangler posted:"Pistols were a boy band" is the gooniest loving thing. How old are you? Yeah I just kinda glossed over that post because well, it's quite a take. I mean looking back they certainly weren't a very good band, but that was kind of the point of punk. Without the Sex Pistols there would likely be no Joy Division, Buzzcocks, The Smiths, etc

Komintern Sect I already knew, but the other two were solid discoveries. Here's some more: Nice, I know warrior kids and Les collabos, those others are new, I'll check them out. And I'm in Canada eh If you haven't checked out any of the Chaos en France comps you should. Drei Oklok is so much fun

When people say the Sex Pistols were a boy band, they mean that they were literally managed like a boy band by Malcolm McLaren, not that they weren't hardcore or underground enough. They were really important culturally but I'm still surprised anyone cares enough about them to get defensive

tardwrangler posted:"Pistols were a boy band" is the gooniest loving thing. How old are you? I think this is the first time Ive ever seen that statement considered controversial. Just because the Sex Pistols played a different genre of music than most boy bands doesnt mean they were as heavily managed as other boy bands like The Monkees. Im not sure how old I should be to understand that.

I'm old as gently caress. I was sixteen when it all changed. I still love the sound and the attitude and the whole thing was the major influence on my life. There is enough written and spoken stuff out there to vindicate the sex pistols on most levels. See what your heroes say, listen to actual musos discuss it. I went to the filthy lucre show just to see Steve and Paul play together Thats not a studio sound. Its monumental and played with real relish. People love the mclaren narrative for some reason when everyone who actually knew him thought he was a lying oval office.

Vindicate the Sex Pistols about what? Im sorry if I somehow be-smudged the honor of your favorite band, but are you really not aware of the role Malcolm McLaren played in their management?

Most peoples knowledge of the band is a lovely tabloid pastiche. I think thats a shame. listen to the album a few times

Im pretty skeptical about this. By the time McClaren put the Sex Pistols together guys like Richard Hell were already making some waves in NYC and Velvet Underground had been around for over a decade. The influences that lead to bands like The Buzzcocks and lots of other good bands were already out there. The Sex Pistols have kind of an outsized image in punk rock because of how much media attention they garnered, but their influence is actually way smaller. Lots of other important UK punk bands also formed in '75 that were way more influential, Sham 69 being a noteworthy example.

It's this, their entire fashion style and attitude was planned out by McLaren and Vivienne Westwood (McLaren to make money off the band, Westwood to make money off the fashion).
