this is it, one of the definitive moments of Red Alert 2. if you had to ask me to sum up the game in one screenshot, this would be it. In fact, this whole sequence does a wonderful job setting the tone. As always, the red-wearing "bad guys" faction is actually the best.

Ahh, and now as always in C&C games, the much cooler "bad guy" faction with its superior cutscenes. Absolutely love this opening mission, it just sets the tone perfectly, double so when Hell March 2 begins blaring right at the start. And of course the utter swarm of air dropped Conscripts and tanks at the end is also fantastic. Mission itself is of course incredibly easy and teaches the basics, but in much more style then the Allies.

probably because WiC was really good??? that is my opinion

I think it did really well on all three acts, so to speak, of the campaign. Soviet Assault arguably made the total experience kind of worse, despite being good in and of itself, because it broke up the tight pacing of just the original campaign.

I wouldn't give up the combined campaign now that we have it but I am glad I experienced the original 1.0 campaign.

I also really appreciated the work they did on the characters - it gave the game a human dimension and more relatable stakes than the more abstract high-level strategic goals ("Save the USA/Europe from Communist invasion"/"Stabilize the USSR through outward expansion (to distract from famine?)")

Soviet 02: Operation: Hostile Shore

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe5R63M-RX0
Operation: Hostile Shore

Those American dogs have completely crumbled following attacks against the financial district of New York, as well as the loss of their obtuse Pentagon! A second wave is enroute and is set to hit the Allied naval forces stationed in Florida quickly, with the goal of rendering the facilities in the area useless. General Vladimir will be available to provide support, but you will be the one to lead the forces ashore.

The map appears to Orlando, or the area directly East of it.

Location: Orlando, Florida State, United States of America
Objective: Destroy all Allied forces in the area.

Briefing: The Americans have foolishly gathered a fleet in a small harbor on the eastern coast of Florida. Assisted by General Vladimir in his Dreadnought, you will force a landing on the hostile shore and set up a base. When ready, you will strike out against the capitalist pigs and crush them under the heel of Soviet justice.

Author's note: A nice, easy mission. It feels much easier than it should when you slip in some forces around the rear of the base and the AI starts panic-selling its stuff.

Flak Track
RANGE: Short-Medium
ARMOR: Heavy
WEAPON: Flak Cannon
COST: 500

This light Soviet vehicle is designed to defend against both air- and light ground-assaults. It attacks by expelling flak, much like the Flak Trooper. This vehicle can also operate as a troop transport, carrying infantry units over-ground. This vehicle is not amphibious and cannot cross water.

Author's Note: Interesting that it mentions non-amphibious movement. Not quite sure why.

Rhino Tank
RANGE: Medium
ARMOR: Heavy
WEAPON: 120mm Cannon
COST: 900

The Soviet answer to the Allied Grizzly Battle Tank is the Rhino Heavy Tank. Larger and slower than the Grizzly, the Rhino is geared toward pure power and is extremely effective against structures.

Author's Note: The Hammer of the Soviet ground forces, more than capable of scrapping any allied vehicles they come across.

Attack Sub
RANGE: Medium
ARMOR: Heavy
WEAPON: Torpedo (Unspecified size)
COST: 600

This naval vessel attacks from below the waves, launching powerful torpedoes at its foes. Not capable of attacking land-based targets, the Typhoon is nonetheless a powerful unit for naval conflicts, and in large numbers conflicts and, in large numbers, can take complete control of waterways. Typhoon Attack Subs are stealth units and do not appear on enemy radar.

Author's Note: The workhorse of the Soviet navy, attack subs will be the primary anti-vessel weapon platform for Red commanders.

Radar
ARMOR: Wood
COST: 1000
POWER USED: 50
PURPOSE: Produces Radar

Because the Soviets do not have traditional aircraft, they have no need of an airfield. The Radar Tower, when created, activates the Soviet Radar display.

Author's Note: Does what you would expect - provides the Radar map.

War Factory
ARMOR: Wood
COST: 2000
POWER USED: 25
PURPOSE: Produces vehicles

If you wish to build vehicles (and you will), you will need a War Factory. All ground vehicles are created at the War Factory, although many may require the addition of other buildings to allow for production.

Author's Note: Nothing of note, it is equivalent to the Allied War Factory.

Naval Shipyard
ARMOR: Concrete
COST: 1000
POWER USED: 20
PURPOSE: Produces ships

Your navy will play an important role both in protecting your base and in attacking the enemy position. All of your naval units, including [REDACTED], are created at your Naval Yard. This structure must be placed entirely in water. Damaged ships can be returned to the Naval Yard to be repaired.

Author's Note: Functionally the same as the Allied Shipyard.

Aftermath:

Faster than Par Time: "The American fleet and Naval base were destroyed so quickly that your soldiers were able to capture several American officers."

Slower than Par Time: "The American fleet was destroyed. While Soviet casualties were high, this is of no concern so long as you continue to bring victory."

The mission is pretty meh, but at least I finally noticed the alt-history joke you've got going with Romanov's pet.

Okay, so a bit more: subs are great. Soviet navy in general is a lot more fun than the Allied one because the units are a lot more varied in speed, pricing and role - while an Allied fleet is more or less a homogenous blob, Soviets specialize a lot more and as a result their units tend to be more efficient at their designed roles. Well, the Dreadnought may be weaker than the Aircraft Carriers but just look at the size of those missiles. gently caress drones.

Yeah, I also really like the Soviet Navy vs the American one more, just more style. And yeah, barrels are actually kinda lethal in RA2, vs the kinda OK at best ones from RA1 and the laughable ammo crates from TS/FS. As for the mission, its a solid enough introduction to the Soviet Navy, although it is kinda silly that 95% of the action of the map takes places on land, and outside of mopping up the various Allied Destroyers, you don't even have to mess around on the water.

Tesla Trooper
RANGE: Short
ARMOR: Plate
WEAPON: Shock Gloves/Gun
COST: 500

This specialised infantry unit attacks with a powerful electrical charge generated from his portable [REDACTED]. Tesla Troopers are valuable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their immunity to being steam-rolled by enemy tanks. In times of emergency power shortages, Tesla Troopers can charge up the [REDACTED] defending your base to keep them operating against enemy units. Charging up a [REDACTED] will also increase its range and power. To charge a [REDACTED], simply move a Tesla Trooper near it. Charging will happen automatically.

Author's Note: Very useful to have a few hanging around your base in case your Tesla Reactors aren't enough. Also they do rather well against infantry aren't a counter to anything, judging by their damage stats. At the very least their damage is only reduced against Light armoured stuff.

Flak Trooper
RANGE: Medium
ARMOR: None
WEAPON: Flak Launcher
COST: 300

This advanced infantry unit is useful against both ground and air targets. The Flak Trooper attacks with explosive flak, allowing him to damage aircraft as well as seriously wound enemy infantry.

Author's Note: Your low tech portable means of anti-air defense as the Soviets. Generally useful to have as they perform double-duty against Allied buildings.

V3 Launcher
RANGE: Long-Extreme
ARMOR: Light
WEAPON: V3 Rocket
COST: 800

The V3 Rocket Launcher is the closest thing the Soviet army has to artillery. While physically weak and easily destroyed, the V3 is capable of tremendous devastation. It launches very powerful, long-range rockets that can cause huge amounts of damage to whatever they hit. A great support weapon, the V3 Rocket Launcher is too vulnerable to lead an assault.

Author's Note: Sadly, the lack of any real splash damage really hinders the V3's power and use. Still, useful to hit something like a Prism Tower from outside its range.

Psi Corps Trooper
RANGE: Medium
ARMOR: None
WEAPON: Mind Bullets
COST: 1000

There is no manual entry for this unit.

Author's Note: Able to take control of enemy units, Psi-Corps Troopers are dangerous in the right wrong hands.

Aftermath:

Faster than Par Time: "The Psychic Beacon was built so quickly that an entire American Armored division was captured by its power before they could escape."

Slower than Par Time: "You have spread the power of Premier Romanov. American civilians are eagerly joining our army."

Hmmmm, not sure why I confused the Flak. Must've been thinking of something else at time of writing. As for the Tesla Trooper, I looked into the rules.ini file and, interestingly, they never get any bonuses. They do straight damage to all infantry, reduced damage against "Light" armoured stuff, and back to regular for everything else (Not counting buildings).

Yeah, really like this mission, it is nicely designed, has plenty of ubran fighting, some various Tech Buildings scattered around, plus some new units to use, with the bridge down the middle acting as an interesting battlefield set piece. Never did find to much of a use for Tesla Troopers though, as they are a bit of a downgrade in my books from the super powered ones in the RA1 expansions. Flak Troopers though are super useful and always handy to have around, while V3s are, as shown, kinda tough to use what with their animation locks and slow firing speed, especially vs their V2 counterparts from RA1, but they do the same thing as in RA1, force a response.

The issue with V2 vs V3 rockets is that the Red Alert variant had a chance to fire very, very quickly. There's something that either randomizes the launch or varies it to occur within a set period. So, sometimes your V2 took just as long as the V3, but for the V3, its now always preceded by the same, long animation.
