I figure this is a good moment to start posting a new comic, in the best case I won't have to continue for long Rymy-Eetu ("Rough Eddie") by one of the most successful early Finnish comic artists, Erkki Tanttu, was first published in 1930 and continued until 1973 (43 years!!!) and accounts the exploits of a man who is incredibly strong and, while no Einstein, crafty in his own manner. The album that I'm scanning from is called "Rymy-Eetu ryssän kauhu" or "Rough Eddie the Terror of Russians" and it's a collection of war time comics in which Eetu kicks some socialist soviet rear end from 1939 to 1944. The strip is reflective of the Finnish war propaganda of the time, "one Finn equals ten Russians" and alike, but fortunately Soviet soldiers are not depicted in any super racist manner, just the normal propaganda way of the time of unshaven and poorly clothed, unsoldierly looking men. The original newspaper strips were printed as they were, but when they were collected onto albums (this material comes from five Rymy-Eetu albums published during the war) the editor Tauno Karilas re-titled some of them and wrote witty poems to accompany all of them. I'm not going to wax poetic and rhyme them for you, but I shall still translate the contents for some background. So here it goes. We start in autumn 1939, as Soviet Union has presented an ultimatum to Finland and Finland mobilizes reserves. At the end of November Red Army crosses the border and the Winter War begins. In October Eetu saw that people were evacuating. There ends his peace and rest. He loads the cart and puts horse in front. Destination is not far but the horsey is getting troublesome. Crick, crack, the wheels break and the horse refuses to budge. Rymy-Eetu immediately gets into business but it's clear to all that the puller is not at fault. Eetu gives out a terrible cry, but soon calms and pardons the horse Rymy is not afraid of work so he puts the load on his back. (n.b. this is one where the editor, Tauno Karilas, has re-titled the strip afterwards (the original title was "Rymy-Eetu's carriage"), in this case to construct a historical narrative in the album "Rymy-Eetu at the front 1939-40". The original strip has nothing to do with evacuating civilian property.) In November the South East corner got restless and so here as well the times changed, danger lurked above The people heard a strange noise in their ears Alarm! People ran, some panicked and fell In the end people went to look at the source of the awful sound Air raid siren came from Rymy-Eetu's tuba notes. Eetu thought: "I'll be going to war like others therefore I shall load up a beef into my tummy Eetu spends plenty of time in the restaurant Time passes, hour handles go around Finally he returns from eating, stomach requires more room the door was dislodged, the wall was left with a large hole. Rymy-Eetu joined the army and came to the battlefield hill he saw two enemies and took cover on the ground The Ivans have strange habit, sitting down while at work on what they think is a mound, pressing down Rymy-Eetu Suddenly Eetu straightens out his back and his butt: the boys of the steppe were flung far, this was Eetu's first victory Rymy-Eetu, the strongest man, was sent to stop the tank Eetu watches behind a boulder, the tank trundles along As the tank approaches, he ducks beneath the steel beatle goes under it like a bomb, but what happens next? Practised in art of war, Eetu turns the tank over then he starts jumping on it with both feet to level it.

Welp, as promised, here is my essay on "Beetle Bailey." I was holding out because I've been waiting on a couple of older collections to come in the mail, but I'm not sure they'll be here in time. Expect a lot of "at some point" and "eventually" in this because I don't have dates or a ton of examples. Shout out to amigolupus for encouraging me to finally write this thing The Dispassion of Beetle Bailey Although I don't believe this was the original intention of Mort Walker, Beetle Bailey depicts a relationship of convenience between the titular character and the most prominent woman character. Beetle and Miss Buxley are ostensibly a romantic couple, but their interactions suggest that their relationship is a genuine and non-romantic friendship. This is a mutually beneficial arrangement: Miss Buxley is able to avoid sexual/romantic attention from the troops, and Beetle can mask his disinterest in sexual relations with women. A note: for this essay, I am going to describe Beetle as "nonsexual" instead of "asexual," since asexual has a specific meaning regarding human sexuality. By "nonsexual," I mean that Beetle's words and actions indicate a distinct disinterest in sex; he is never observed kissing Miss Buxley, or even holding her hand. He also doesn't say anything to indicate that he finds Miss Buxley attractive. However, because he is under social pressure to be a Manly Man and gently caress chicks, it's important that he at least maintain that façade. One could argue that "Beetle Bailey" is an old-fashioned legacy strip, so of course there isn't anything in it to suggest sex. To that I say Anyway, there are a few reasons that could explain Beetle's nonsexuality: 1. He's asexual and closeted 2. He's attracted to men and closeted 3. He has a very low libido and/or little motivation to pursue sex with anyone Option 3 presents some interesting possibilities. Beetle is depicted as a comically lazy soldier, but his behavior suggests that he may suffer from a medical condition. Low libido can be caused by medication, a hormone imbalance, general poor health, and depression. My personal theory is that depression is at least one factor in Beetle's nonsexuality. He's unmotivated to complete his tasks, prefers to sleep the day away, sabotages his army career, gets into physical altercations with his superior, and shows no interest in advancement. Exhaustion, self-destructive behavior, a gently caress It attitude, and disinterest in sex/relationships are common symptoms of depression. Options 1 and 2 are indictments of how lovely society, the military in particular, is to queer people; the unfortunate reality is that being out and in the military is literally life-threatening. Being closeted is stressful enough, being closeted in the military is probably through-the-roof levels of anxiety and stress. Having an ally, maybe another kind of outsider such as a civilian coworker who is a woman (less likely to react negatively or snitch), would be invaluable. An ally willing to be a beard is probably a god-send when you're in such a precarious situation. What's in it for Miss Buxley? Less of this bullshit: Beetle seems to be fairly popular with his fellow soldiers. The only person you see him argue with or insult is Sarge, which has earned him some respect and admiration; same for the creative ways he gets out of doing work. He always shows patience with Zero, the dumbest soldier in the barracks, and listens with (maybe feigned) interest to Plato, the smartest one, wax philosophical. The guys like and respect Beetle enough to not flirt with Miss Buxley, although all bets are off the second she's single: Thus, Miss Buxley gets some peace from the soldiers--the ones who don't respect her as a person, at least respect that she is Beetle's girlfriend and leave her alone. Beetle himself treats her with respect, and he's undemanding of her time/attention (although I think he's still kind of a mooch moneywise). As for Beetle, he can survive in an environment of toxic masculinity with little suspicion and relative ease. Their living arrangements--him at Camp Swampy, her off-base in her own home--provide the perfect excuse for not being together all the time. They have a believable excuse to escape from the camp as often as possible, and as they're well-liked, they're given the benefit of any doubts that they're a couple. And perhaps most importantly, a young private and a civilian secretary in a hostile environment, during the tumultuous early years of adulthood, have found a friend and ally, someone to rely on and support. Thank you. Let me say that these newspaper comic threads were what inspired me to re-reg after like eight years of being off the forums. I even joined the Patreon, which I canceled yesterday. (It couldn't hurt to check if you're still signed up but forgot.) You guys are all awesome, in literally every way possible. The content is amazing. The effort everyone has put in is unbelievable. The edits are hilarious. The discussion is funny, interesting, and inclusive. And everyone is genuinely good and cool to each other, even when emotions run a little high. I think it says something that no matter what "era" Something Awful has been in, the newspaper comic threads are always outstanding. Like a lot of you, I joined the discord and Bread n' Roses, and I'll keep up with this specific thread to the bittersweet end, however things end.

The thread title is making me seriously sad, so good job mods who know and care about the little community in this one thread. I downloaded Discord. Does anyone have tips about how to make the app experience any more like the familiar forums? Over my years of lurking, I've bought a surprising number of collections posted here, like Modesty and Val. But WHEN will there be another Arlo and Janis book? The only one I know costs $122 today! Please Mr. Johnson....

Haven't posted in a while, but I wanted add my thanks to the posters of this thread as well. It's been amazing to have an actual community around this nerdy niche interest of ours. Hard to believe it all might be coming to end. Speaking of which: anyone know if there are any efforts to create a "The Finer Arts"-like offsite forum? I'm not super-excited about B&R's vibe, but I'd gladly join a more arts-focused, non-CSPAM-forked SA offshoot.

I've been lurking in these threads for a long time. I can't quite remember when I started, but I'm pretty sure it was before Modesty Blaise was being posted - which is quite a while ago now. I think the OP had an edit of Locher Tracy with a guy in an excavator running over someone, edited into something I can only call "Grabenfahrer Klaus": *BUMP* "What was that?" *BUMP* "What was that?" *BUMP* "What was that?" *BUMP* I'm hoping the thread will survive somehow, not neccessarily here. Discord seems...disorganized, but at least I have some palce to get information in case SA suddenly vanishes completely.

Oh, that's right, Brenda nearly killed, or at best disabled, a guy with a broken neck. Anyway, if you've been wanting a little beefcake in the paper dolls, enjoy! (I'm referring to the bulldog, not Pesky.) Smokey Stover I'm going to assume this is a reference that would make sense if you were a loyal listener to Major Bowes' Amateur Hour in 1936. Bonus Ad! Also someone who barely ever posted in the whole decade I've had an account coming on up to say thank you for these threads; it was one of the few threads for years on end now I'd read religiously. Everything about every version of this thread has been fantastic and even tho I erred towards the more pulp end of things (classic Val and Conan and the Corto Maltese stuff were what I mostly came for) I also got a lot out of reading things like Moomin or the DtWoF effortposts, given how stupidly gay I myself am and the context it gave a lot of my own history and before. It was all good, or bad-good, or good-bad. Except 9CWL gently caress that comic beyond entropy holy loving poo poo that thing is just, well, yeah. Absolutely nothing about that is salvageable. I dunno how people feel about non-posters like me joining the Discord just to lurk the newspaper comics section, so just know you've definitely convinced me to seek out some omnibus copies of a lot of this stuff when I have the money to do so and will think of you in spirit when I do. I will probably be too busy tomorrow to pick back up on DtWOF (I got a lot of big news in my personal life today but did not have a lot of time to do much about it because of forums poo poo) but in the mean time please enjoy these one-offs from the 1995 DtWOF calendar that I threw up on the discord last night: Rice dream was a vegan ice cream substitute that was popular for many years because it ruled. Dinah Shore was a singer and actress who was also an avid golfer and supporter of women's pro golf. PFLAG was founded in 1973 as an advocacy group for the parents and family of queer people. That's phrased poorly-- they're a group made up of the parents and families of queer people that do general queer rights advocacy. There are comics I hate-read here (and many thanks to the posters who post them! ), and there are some that I'm really fond of, including Nekonaughey, Breaking Cat News, and Out our Way. I've mentioned I enjoy the latter as the boys in it are roughly the same age my dad would have been in the same era. I also like the 'Born Thirty Years Too Soon' episodes of the strip, because that would be my grandfather's era -- enjoy a photo of him from about that time, and see what I mean? That's him in the middle, with his sister and one of their pals. (My great-aunt is on the viewer's left). We also have photos of that side of the family from between the 1890s and 1920s, and all of them that aren't formal portraits feature an assortment of dorgs. Good to see this thread will keep going; I've been enjoying it since the original days of FOOB exegesis and its blinking characters.
