Doesn't seem to be any mention of abuse that I could see but I don't know who any of the people involved are.

Almost certainly not. Reckful was pretty up-front for years about having significant ongoing mental health issues.

He was a formative figure in game streaming, so a lot of people knew him or knew of him, but I've not known anyone to say anything truly bad about him.

Just coincidental timing then, or as noted, maybe he was having a hard time with the information coming out about something that mattered a lot to him.

I don't have a good sense of the size of the communities involved but there seems to be a lot of stories about apparently high profile game streamers... Is it a lot proportional to the number of people with that sort of visibility?

From a casual glance at the facts that are available, it seems like it was the conjunction of general pandemic malaise, pre-existing issues, and a relationship going south. It also seems like an impulse decision on his part, since he was involved in the creation of a game of his own.

From what I'm gathering, smash is a game where they let people of all ages compete but they had absolutely no rules to protect minors. Minors were allowed to heavily drink and hang out with adults in a lot of cases. Combine the stupidity of youth with hero worship and you get cases like Nairo/Keitaro and apparently a good deal of other smash players.

While I think Zack should of known better than to come onto multiple adult players- he should have never been in that situation in the first place and it was Nairo's responsibility to put a stop to it instead of just going with it.

There's a lot to unpack with it. I think most of it is simply that game streaming is a solitary, mostly self-driven activity that's attractive to young people, often involves the convention circuit, and encourages performative behavior to get people talking about you. It's the kind of thing where if you don't have or build a significant personal support system before you start, or right after you start, you're pretty much asking for trouble.

It's also got a similar issue to a lot of other modern Internet broadcasting, where Twitch will only do the absolute bare minimum to enforce its community standards and will let even those slide as long as someone is sufficiently lucrative. It wants to make money; it doesn't want to actually be an accredited broadcast medium. It's a breeding ground for bad behavior.

The perverse incentives of being media personalities (both mainstream and otherwise) is something I am familiar with to be sure. Just trying to get a sense of what proportion of the top level is hosed up. I know there's seemingly some high profile youtubers who are also in trouble recently. Though again the weird nature of the platform makes it hard to gauge what proportion of the... audience getters, I guess, that would encompass. Everyone kinda sees their own curated version of what's broadcast. I only know the youtubers second hand though I gather they're pretty big. When stuff comes out about more traditional media you can look and think like "oh yeah jimmy saville was one of only a literal handful of people with his position at the time" whereas with online stuff there could be millions of people out there doing those numbers for all I know, and I'd never see most of them, so when dozens of credible accusations come out that seems like a lot but maybe it isn't compared to how many people there are doing online broadcasting.

I guess it follows the same logic though, it's so unregulated and targeted at a young audience that you'd struggle to design something more suited to predators.

Looks like MacD also has new allegations of sexual assault being leveled against him. I've no stake in the Smash community, and this was only brought to my attention due to MacD being the current head referee of the League Championship Series, which is the organization for the professional League of Legends scene in NA. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a lot of cross-pollination of sex creeps going on in esports, especially considering he was apparently hired when the first allegations from Sky Williams had already hit Twitter.

I can say pretty certainly (to the extent that I don't know him but have watched/followed Reckful for years now) that this isn't the case with him, necessarily. At least not in a way that impacts this. He's always had trouble with depression and things go way worse after his oldest brother (he was the youngest of three) killed himself when he was younger.

Dude has had multiple live conversations with Dr. Kanojia of Healthygamer.gg that are extremely worthwhile watches if you have ever had issues with existential depression, though they can be triggering given their candid nature.

Not wholly relevant to the #MeToo situation but definitely wanted to mention that stuff specifically since a lot of this poo poo has been taking a toll on me and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

the 'entire community' isnt burning to ashes. This 'everyone is awful' poo poo is useless at best and harmful at worst.

The vast, vast majority of people are not sex predators or monsters. That's self-evident. A few big names abusing their social power and a few smaller randoms just being creeps doesn't mean the community is bad. This isn't despairing, this is hopeful. We take out all these people, and their victims, and the people who stood by them, will still be there, ready to start anew with lessons learned.

FGC has been trying to improve. Still a long way to go but it's something.

This situation is one of these things that are very depressing to read about but should be a good thing in the grand scheme of things - yes i hate seeing that something i like has a bunch of monsters in it, but at least they're exposed now and maybe the community can heal and move on and be better.
