Bernie's biggest problem is that he believes in the system and thinks he can work within it to achieve Good Things for people. He might have given up on the people, as they were unable to overcome the forces of the DNC. It isn't all Bernie or the people. He likely could have had a better strategy, catered to the media a bit more by having dumb puff "access" poo poo but simultaneously take advantage of them. Ground game of people working outside the campaign when it became apparent certain campaign people could not be trusted. He could have had rallies in the 4-year interim where after the rally everyone marched over to City Hall/State House/Governor's Mansion/Congress Member's office, perhaps with a comically large effigy or pinata of an obstructionist figure, and after Bernie introduced relevant legislation. Say, M4A bill comes out, Mitch McConnell doesn't bring it to vote, so Bernie holds a rally in McConnell's district...
