If you're just going to be 'clever' and tip-toe around the slur you actually want to say, then just say the slur so your posts generates even more reports , and you get probated even quicker!

Sorry mate, you know slurs just straight up aren't allowed in Games; even in the context of repeating what somebody else said.
Eat the six and don't do it again please.

There were a couple of other reports I've taken a look at. The above 2 probes are the only ones I felt required actioning at this point in time.

I mean, Games (and most subs, really) is very much under a zero tolerance policy for slurs even in just an illustrative context. It's not like this was the first probe someone ate for that.

I'm fine with the spirit of that, but cmon, this is an obvious case where you just say "hey, please don't do it", especially in a thread like this one, instead of giving them the exact same punishment as the other guy.

I'm just saying it's been the policy, even if it's illustrative, because it can be triggering and all that. Plus it's a sixer, no one is going to hold it against them.

The probation reason is phrased such that it sounds like the slur was used directly, rather than illustratively, misleading people who don't click through.

I should have been clearer on that as I was asked by a mod to check on on several reports that had been generated recently, to which I've reported back to them to ensure there are no issues with my decisions.
Anything I'm borderline about, or unsure of , always has a second set of eyes on it afterwards.

It could've been better phrased but I don't think it's a scarlet letter or whatever, and I don't think anyone is gonna be able to use it against her. We all get dumb probes sometimes — although that post in the FGC thread should've probably been hit too, and I don't even have the patience to debate her on that topic for the 120th time either.

Anyway, on the FGC, Sonicfox got death threats from an abusive member of the furry community, and their roommate Nakkiel got accused of forcing his at the time GF into intimacy (it's a bit more complicated than that, I can't pull up the tweets right now, but other people have corroborated that he was pretty lovely). Dude's been having a terrible couple of weeks. :/

you got some real letter of the law vs spirit of the law issues. nobody objects to a rule saying homophobic slurs are bad so gay posters feel more welcome or whatever, but framing it so a gay poster just loves slurs for the crime of quoting said slur wrong, while treating another poster who all but says someone loves perpetuating rape culture because they're an "internet lesbian" with kid gloves is literally doing the opposite of what that rule's ostensibly supposed to do

if Games has a zero tolerance policy then so be it, but people are upset about the wording of the probe reason

as dumb as it is people do like to pull someone's rap sheet as an argument on SA sometimes, and just saying they dropped a slur leaves a very different impression compared to something a bit more descriptive about what happened

yeah the fact that this actually isn't listed as a rule should probably be remedied if you're taking a actual zero tolerance policy by saying us gays can't say the word human being when just literally discussing the use of the word and not using it towards any person or in any way remotely resembling homophobia

since you know, the only rule regarding it doesn't mention slurs at all and is instead against homophobia which this is clearly not an example of

Yeah nah this thread is right.

I've listened to your feedback, gone back to have another re-read in context, and they've been giving their marching orders.
In my role as IK I am trying to be as supportive as I can be, and I want you to know that I'm I 100% have your back if someone is being homophobic/bigoted/racist/etc in threads.
I hope this comes across in my posts whenever I have to stop in and make a decision, and I apologise if I give off a brusk or flippant impression by posting like an Aussie :v:

In this case I made the wrong call the first time, as my personal modding style is to issue warnings more than probes.
They're off for six, and they'll be looked at by a mod on top of it.

Elephant Parade posted:

Whatever people feel is appropriate/in-line with their posting style.

Again, we just straight up don't want to see slurs, and I would ask for this threads support in this matter.

Hi all. I was linked to this thread by Pragmatica. Apologies for being away from the forums I have had personal stuff that meant I left Games to be handled by Pragmatica and the IKs.

I have asked an Admin to remove the probe from Endorph and she should be able to post again. I have also hit that other post in the FGC for longer.

I get what Infinitum was going for. We are definitely trying to crack down on slurs as best as we can. I agree with grapplejack that direct quotes are permissable because the context for the word matters most of all. It was not directed at a poster here or to insult someone else, but a retelling of something.

I have never codified that in the rules but then I have not had fellow mods for a while so I know what I mean by the way the rules are laid out.

I think Infinitum has the ability to do well (his work in other threads has been great) and I think this was just a mistake.

Most of all I apologise for not having seen the other posts sooner and doing something about it. It is not right for that poster to post about Endorph in that way. I am sorry.

Hello video games. thank for you unprobing me. I would like to question why you, the lead mod of games, have a guy who posted a joke about a child being raped into having aids

going into a thread about sexual assault to punish gay people for complaining about homophobia.

Of course, i get that times change. Perhaps jokes about children being raped into having aids were much funnier, seven months ago.
