A4R8 posted:Hong Kong got owned. Taiwan is next after the collapse of America? I was shocked at how quickly China was able to defeat Hong Kong's independent standing army and modern navy. Did they even try and use their extensive air defenses? I don't think they even let loose one anti-ship missile at the PLAN invasion fleet or bombard Chinese staging areas with their cruise missiles. Compared to how well armed and far Hong Kong is from the mainland Taiwan doesn't have a chance.

I'm the tankie who thinks America is going to be the only one to step up to the plate if the PRC is stupid enough to attack the ROC. If Abe reforms the Japanese military like he's thought about, it's all but guaranteed they'd show up within the first few hours. The Phillipines would also be quick on the scene. Probably every NATO country, and if these current border tensions haven't cooled, India too. TSMC is the most significant microchip manufacturer on the planet, and the only one capable of fabbing 7nm chips economically. The Taiwanese would burn it before letting the CCP get its mitts on it. That's catastrophic for basically every single country reliant on TSMC (read: basically every single first world country) Even without foreign intervention, trying to take Taiwan would be a bloodbath. It's a mountainous island that's not easily approachable from the east outside of a few months per year. There's a reason Mao called the invasion off 70 years ago, and the Taiwanese have only gotten more entrenched. It has a professional military with enough ammo to wipe the entire PLAN and PLAAF off the map unless they start pumping out more materiel. The Chinese military struggled against Vietnam, which was way worse off than Taiwan at the time. The PLA hasn't seen many game-changing reforms, and as far as I know they have absolutely no practice when it comes to modern war doctrines, which only multiplies the problems. You're looking at astronomical casualties for the Chinese to even secure a beachhead, and when they finally do, Taiwan will have mobilized millions of conscripts, all pointing rifles at the fresh-faced farmboys who have never been shot at before, being commanded by brass who will care more about saving face than effective strategy. Assuming the PLA is lucky enough to not be repelled, they now have to pacify an island driven into a bloodrage, which has destroyed all its infrastructure and economic value, all the while the world has just leveraged deep economic sanctions against China. So now they're caught in a guerilla war with a cripple economy. Trying to take Taiwan is a triple black diamond operation. The PLA is rated for the bunny slopes, like riot suppression. Yeah if the CCP throws enough bodies at Taiwan, they can take it with catastrophic losses and burning every single bridge they have built. They could also achieve the same result by glassing Taiwan with nukes, and it would actually cost them less. They are going to do neither. Hong Kong is not even remotely comparable.

IIRC someone did a write-up a while back in the Cold War thread going over a hypothetical Taiwan invasion scenario and the main takeaway was that while they're trying to close the gap, especially in terms of the navy, the PLA currently would have real trouble projecting power over Taiwan. They could hit a whole pile of stuff with ballistic missiles, but in other cases shortages such as a real lack of equipment/training with airborne tankers would mean it would be extremely difficult to maintain any sort of air superiority, let alone a sustained air campaign. And that's like even if nobody else gets involved. Mr Luxury Yacht fucked around with this message at 21:04 on Jul 14, 2020 |

Honestly, if relations with China don't improve over the next 10 years, you're probably going to see the US selling Taiwan that fancy anti-strategic missile weapons system. E: also I wouldn't be surprised if the PLA suffered from some blue on blue from lack of coordination. Dont Touch ME fucked around with this message at 21:02 on Jul 14, 2020 |

Here's a thing I have noticed about the Tankies in this thread, (I don't know much about tankies, and haven't encountered them in other places.) Everything in binary. China and America, and only those two. There are other countries, and other regions you know. To use an example. The 9 dash line doesn't affect America in the slightest. It affects The Phillipines, Vietnam etc. These are the countries that are being hurt by the CCP's pettiness. But they don't talk about that, nor take those countries needs/wants or indeed existences into account. Why? Because it doesn't fit into their narrative of America bad, therefore China/CCP good. Which is itself a logical fallacy. Nobody is disputing America bad. And bringing up police racism in one country does not excuse admitted cultural genocide and death camps in another country. Both things are bad, and condemning one does not mean supporting the other. In conclusion, the CCP is poopy, and if you choose to support it, especially from afar, you are an arsehole. edit: Unrelated question: Re: Hong Kong and the CCP's now legal right to oppress and kidnap it's citizens. Is there a similar "security" law in Macau? Coz it is officially a SAR, with different rules/laws to China. I understand this is largely to keep the Casino cash flowing. I also know that Macau is historically better behaved than Hong Kong and as such never needed one. But if the CCP are going to crack down, surely they would have quietly done so in Macau as well. Hell, leave nations out of it. China is doing the aquatic version of "slash and burn" in the SCS and literally destroying coral reefs INTENTIONALLY because there are giant clams at the bottom, or they're dredging materials for more artificial islands. Scientists are predicting that life will not return to normal (assuming everyone just left it alone forever) for centuries. But maybe the Exxon Valdez accident makes it ok?

British doing something good for a change! https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/14/business/huawei-uk-5g.html LONDON — Britain announced on Tuesday that it would ban equipment from the Chinese technology giant Huawei from the country’s high-speed wireless network, a victory for the Trump administration that escalates the battle between Western powers and China over critical technology. The move reverses a decision in January, when Britain said Huawei equipment could be used in its new 5G network on a limited basis. Since then, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has faced growing political pressure domestically to take a harder line against Beijing, and in May, the United States imposed new restrictions to disrupt Huawei’s access to important components.

Within the context of this thread. Not saying society should let the KKK have rallies and functions unchallenged.
