I kind of miss that, getting up in my ship flying forward 100m, then going "oops, there's another small building/trade depot/ruin/etc"

Now there's loving nothing in terms of buildings for like twenty times that distance and I'm just cruising for a while in a direction not seeing anything except knowledge stones, which the game kindly reminds me I drove past way too fast for me to deal with.

I guess that kind of thing is easier with an exo-craft but IDK how the gently caress to get one of those lol

I was playing multiplayer with my friend last night, and I noticed that we saw various things that were not synchronized. Sometimes animals were synchronized, sometimes they weren't. Weather was definitely not synchronized. Is this a setting or something, a bug, or is this just how things are?

I mostly just want to hop between knowledge stones. Seems like you need to hit what, 500 words of each race or more before you learn all the race's words?

someone on youtube made a video about it, which i think may even have been called the redemption of no man's sky or something along those lines. that's what got me to pick it up, because around launch people talked about it like anthem and it wasn't until that video that i realized they'd turned things around. 150 hours later i am glad they did not let a bad launch stop them!

you purchase the upgrade at the terminal, and then you install it in a slot in your backpack (like any other backpack technology).

Once installed, it will automatically translate a few words from all dialogue that you don't already have learned. So if you know 6 of the words in a 20 word dialogue box, it might transalte an additional 2 or 3 words.

did they ever fix the thing where the auto translator takes effect before your own knowledge, so the more words you learned the less effective the translators are because they're likely to translate words you already know?

I meant the "discovery" of systems filled with NPCs and buildings is addressed by the Atlas path, which the game launched with.

if I want to travel to all stars, which "drive" do I need?

Just Hyperdrive+Cadmium? or do I still need Emeril and Indium?

Having just done this myself I can confirm that you only need one drive at a time along with the hyperdrive. I think the hyperdrive is not removable anyway.
The hyperdrive gets you to yellow stars. The cadmium drive will get you to yellow stars and red stars, the emeril drive will get you to yellow, red stars and green stars and the final indium drive will get you to all the stars. You will need to build them in sequence as each drive gets you systems where you'll find the resources needed to build the next.

You can remove the cadmium and emeril drives when you build the next one in the sequence. Though one of the main story quests tells you to build a cadmium drive if you don't have it in so I had to rebuild one just to get to the next step in the quest.

You can keep all 3 if you have the space for a small bonus to range, but you can just have one installed at a time if you need the space for other things.

In other news, I tested out the report a name function the other day and was pleasantly surprised how quick and responsive the devs were.
I found a system named 'Gary Top Bernie Bottom' by Ron Paul so I reported it and 2 days later it had been reverted to it's original name. Our libertarian traveller was not to be defeated though and they have named one of the planets in the system to 'Jet Fuel & Steel Beams' lmao.

In light of the fact that doing almost anything in a system with a base in it risks a crash on Vanilla PS4 I'm considering just biting the bullet and getting it on PC

Then my game crashed and I lost all of it :negative:

At least with PC you get to play around with mods as well. There's some good stuff out there, I played a lot with a mod to bring back the old Foundation-era terrain generation where it was a lot less tame and uniform. That aspect was what I always liked most so getting that generation with the 3 years of QoL since then is nice.

It's ideal for bases too, since when the building first got introduced years ago you were limited to finding base terminals that always spawned in the centre of big flat circle of ground, so you never got to make use of the cool spots you found. Other players won't see the changes terrain without mods, but I just play with a friend and we both have the same mods installed.

There was also a great base building mod so you could have access to all parts above ground, underwater and on freighters. You could also rotate and scale every single part however you want and didn't have to right with the limited snap-to-corners system it normally uses which is a huge bonus. Anything you build that way still displays properly for other players too which is nice. I ready enjoy the base building when you aren't so limited, and the more wild terrain gives you lots of cool base locations to find.

It's from an old post of mine but we came across some good planets when the two of us were playing together in the past, the first one being my favourite.

I keep hoping to run into a truly awesome-looking planet, but so far the game has just been spitting out barren hellworlds in my new game. I haven't played since I dabbled a little when base building was first introduced and only really put double-digit hours in on release. The planets on release were some crazy stuff but at least there was some variety.

Everything is very confusing now, but from the thread it seems like the game is pretty much No Man's Sky 2: The Quest for More Money. :capitalism:

I forgot to link it above but the mod for that style terrain is Back to Foundations. The BTF - Terrain file is all you need, but there's also ones for sky, grass and terrain colours which were all really cut down for some reason as well.

I've never gone in depth on any of the mega-farma and money-making methods but I can see the appeal. I basically play it as a fun chillout exploration game and come back every once in a while as things update. Still can't go back to it without that mod though, unless they ever do a huge terrain overhaul which doesn't seem likely.

I went backpacking last night in a nice pretty world, collecting a few cooking ingredients, going from POI to POI, racking up Knowledge Stones, the like. Just parked the ship somewhere random, figure'd I'd wander off in a direction, fill up my backpack and summon the ship when I was ready.

My adventures eventually took me through a canyon which turned a right angle. Made the turn and ran smack into a crashed freighter. Utterly huge sucker too, even for a freighter.

Sadly it didn't really have much worthwhile in it apart from the distress beacon's blueprint but man, what a great moment in gaming.

How do you farm ships to break down, other than just buying everything that flies into the station? I found a broken down A class on a planet and I tried dropping a save beacon to see if it respawned, but then I discovered that if I pick up the broken ship, my old ship disappears! Thank goodness I used that save beacon.

Do you have a freighter? You need a freighter to store extra ships, you can have up to 6 ships then and you get the option to ‘add to collection’ rather than replace your current ship.
You can get a free freighter after you warp,a few times and defeat the pirates attacking it.

Ah, I think my problem was that my freighter was in another system. Or maybe it was full. Thanks!

Also, build a minimal base there so it's easier to return. It's probably not worth it for an A-class fighter, but I did that accidentally with the first crash I ever found. I figured it would take me a long time to save up all of the repair materials, so why not put a base up and come back later? I had a few surprises over time, when the ship disappeared, then reappeared on my freighter once I got one, and then the crashed ship respawned at the base after I'd gotten rid of the original ship.

Or later, later's fine.
But now would be good.

Am I missing something or do derelict freighters feel extremely not worth it? It's 5M credits (or waiting a week) for getting...at my best run so far, 4M credits worth of tradeables, a few C-class modules, and a freighter upgrade module (of which I need 5 for an actual upgrade). I've only done 3 so far so maybe I've just had a bad run of them, but it just seems like a very early-NMS-feeling effort:payoff trade.

I got the detector from Helios 2 days in a row for free, so I don't think you have to wait a week. But I guess that must be a special offer or why would the scrap dealer be selling them at all?

The real potential of derelicts are Nanites (especially if you get an infested ship), Freighter Upgrades, and Salvaged Frigate Modules. Don't go into them expecting to make your money back because odds are you won't, although if you're lucky you might come close to breaking even if you spent 5 mil.

Personally I also just find them fun and interesting but that's partly because I like the fact that there are horror segments hidden in this otherwise pretty relaxed game.

You can't summon it into Red/Green/Blue systems without the appropriate upgrades and you get more jumps per fuel spent by warping the freighter instead of a ship
