Grounding the boat isn’t the issue.

Lightning rods work because they provide charge a good path to ground that doesn’t go through important structural bits.

The problem for the boat is that the good path to ground does go through important structural bits.

I was pretty poor when younger but needed tools. I was taught by a greybeard to buy a tool kit you can afford, and as each cheap part dies, buy a top quality replacement for that specific tool. That way you over time end up with all quality gear for stuff you actually use, and can afford to do it piece by piece.

Which you can mitigate with a lightning rod, which is absolutely a thing boats have.

That is an impressive wikipedia page. The Tay Bridge disaster must be somebody's special interest.

it's a bit famous

quote:

"The Tay Bridge Disaster" is a poem written in 1880 by the Scottish poet William McGonagall, who has been recognised as the worst poet in history.

quote:

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

'Twas about seven o'clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem'd to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem'd to say-
"I'll blow down the Bridge of Tay."

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers' hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers' hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov'd most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.

So the train mov'd slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o'er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill'd all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav'd to tell the tale
How the disaster happen'd on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

quote:

William Topaz McGonagall (March 1825 – 29 September 1902) was an Irish weaver, poet and actor who lived in Scotland. He won notoriety as an extremely bad poet who exhibited no recognition of, or concern for, his peers' opinions of his work.

He wrote about 200 poems, including "The Tay Bridge Disaster" and "The Famous Tay Whale", which are widely regarded as some of the worst in English literature. Groups throughout Scotland engaged him to make recitations from his work, and contemporary descriptions of these performances indicate that many listeners were appreciating McGonagall's skill as a comic music hall character. Collections of his verse remain popular, with several volumes available today.

McGonagall has been lampooned as the worst poet in British history. The chief criticisms are that he was deaf to poetic metaphor and unable to scan correctly. His only apparent understanding of poetry was his belief that it needed to rhyme. McGonagall's fame stems from the humorous effects these shortcomings are considered to generate in his work. Scholars argue that his inappropriate rhythms, weak vocabulary, and ill-advised imagery combine to make his work amongst the most unintentionally amusing dramatic poetry in the English language.

Federal Pacific Stab‐Lok circuit breakers are infamous for not breaking circuits and causing electrical fires.

Insurance companies will not cover the property if they are installed.

These are used, which is even somehow a next level of insanity.

Well of course they are used. Like the listing says, "these are the old style and no longer made" so you can't get new ones. Duh.

There seems to be a weird used market for stab loks. Like this listing:

I checked the HomeDepot.ca and you can get a brand new 40+ slot breaker for under 300 canada bucks, so 500 for used doesn't seem like a great deal at all. I guess the used panel also includes some used breakers, but still.

Good news: a third party made new breakers to fit Stab‐Lok panels.

Bad news: they fail to trip even more than the FPE originals.

Flip a coin. If it’s heads, your home burns down.

Even if you somehow got good breakers to STAB and LOK, the mechanical design of the panel is bad and they wouldn’t stay stable and locked for long.

During the storm yesterday a power line fell down and cut power to the neighborhood. Then the line itself caught on fire in the street while waiting for pepco to show up then the street caught on fire.

Fire dept showed up 5 mins after it happened but couldn't do anything because the wire was still live.

When they finally shut off the power the fire dept had to chop a hole in the road to chase the fire.

The line was down 3 houses up from us and even while inside you could hear the electricity making noise.

One of the best things about living in SW is that all our power lines are buried. I hope you get service back before too long, this heat is brutal with no AC.

In total it was about 6 hours for them to get the neighborhood powered back up.

There's a gnarly pot hole repair over the hole they had to chop in the road that will probably quickly fail and remain a problem judging on how normal pot holes are treated around here.

If it’s Pepco you might be OK. They just dug up most of 4th St SW and a couple of weeks ago came back and repaved the street, and even put in new concrete sidewalks which they’d previously torn up. I was shocked!
