Malazan Book of the Fallen, squad-based RTT with non-standard RPG mechanics (can't actually build your characters, instead they come with inherent traits and quirks you can just influence with training).

Actually almost posted this as a non-joke answer since I'm reading it right now. Would prefer a third person action-RPG that shifts characters throughout the story, though

I can't say they haven't made the effort at this point, but it is still far removed from an enjoyable experience and the bugs present make Bethesda look downright competent. A couple months ago I watched someone stream it and he couldn't go 10 minutes without encountering something game breaking. Judging by recent reviews, it's still possible to have your entire fleet disappear when you try to move it, a bug that's been in the game for years now.

And the loving thing still costs $60.

It's very admirable that they did what almost no-one else does but it's not really made it into a good game. It's too shallow, has an arcade style simplicity and "fake" feeling due to a lack of simulation, struggles to make things feel meaningful, has an awkward UI and a paper thin plot/main quest design.

Mission Impossible, we only had one really not so great game. It'd kinda be perfect in the mould of an Uncharted, except superspy poo poo.

Gravity's Rainbow. As a cover shooter.

Serious answer: Big as poo poo RPG set in Ian Banks' Culture universe. Or the Algebraist universe for the sci fi hipster crowd.

Not a genre property, but since we're talking about games we'd want to see, I'd love to have a game like Hunter: Call of the Wild but with cameras instead of guns. Big, beautiful outdoor environments filled with exquisitely animated animal life with the goal of taking rad wildlife images. Upgrade from a lovely Canon Rebel with a kit 300mm all the way up to a 1DXIII and a 600mm f4 prime. Get photos of rare species and become a famous NatGeo photographer. Its super nerd poo poo that like 5 people would play. I've been playing RDR2 lately, which is fantastic btw, but I'm getting pretty sick of killing animals in games tbh.

Oh man there are so many ways you could go small scale with the very character based stuff, squad tactics with the Marines like you said or total war style with the chain of dogs or some of the later big battles.

Or just a god of war type brawler with Karsa.

Edit: But I think you are right with the marines, malazans biggest strength is in the characters and the nutty interconnectedness of events separated by hundreds of thousands of words when you finally realize "oh, that's what happened. That would probably transfer terribly to games. The marines though are the other standout, having just dudes and ladies tactically using gunpowder and engineering to defeat overwhelming armies in a world of high magic is a cool setpiece.

Make a multiplayer hidden traitor game based on The Thing that let you slowly infect other players, causing them to switch sides. If anyone who is not a human gets on the helicopter, humans lose.

Just for funsies, one in ten games launches with no Thing character in the game. Just 4-6 humans, no way to get infected. :getin:
