that’s not the point the point is poo poo sucked way more in the past and change was much harder, yet people fought on and didn’t fall into the doomer mindset. Well some did but no one remembers them because they were irrelevant

Splicer posted:You've misunderstood the doomer mindset. It's not just "Nothing will ever change, we're hosed", it's also "Nothing changes until things get super hosed". Serfs are no longer bound to their duke's land because the black plague annihilated europe, there weren't enough serfs to go round, and suddenly it was a serf's market*. "The oceans can't boil away fast enough" is both "Hooray we're all going to die" and "Maybe those left will actually get their poo poo together". The black plague didn't lead directly to rising wages, and in fact England had a law on the books locking wages to pre-plague that was enforced for several decades (including with loving branding!). Rising wages, at least in England, resulted from the 1381 Peasant's Revolt, solidly 30 years after the Black Death hit England. Change wasn't because a bunch of peasants died, but because those peasants dragged officials and lawyers out of their towers and killed them.

We can truly be the greatest generation, and those of us who survive can at least take comfort that our sacrifice means humanity is liberated from the ills of greed, racism and appeasement once for all. We're witnessing the collapse of capitalism, and truly after this great bloodshed people will finally develop class consciousness. But first, there is a lot of blood to be shed. Of course, we won't quite be the ones enjoying it all, for a lot of us will die - even assuming this isn't just the Arab Spring of America - and the survivors will always carry having witnessed the slaughter. But just wait, for after this, society will be booming with love towards all, peace for all mankind and the confidence that never again will things go to poo poo. And yet, even nature itself shows that it's not so simple. Horrors of all kinds persist simply because they are successful. And humanity follows the same paths. Where there is life, there will be a descent into misery until someone or something grows strong enough to make it stop. The crime is life.

Does anyone remember that old flash game where you play as an oil company starting in the 20th century, and it turns out the game is actually kinda easy to “win” by maximizing profits but unless you transition to renewable energy early and aggressively (which is possible but hard) you end up either facing a choice between losing or making soylent oil out of third word serfs when the wells run dry? That’s the kinda vibes Human Energy(tm) is giving me.

Doomer badge earned, let's absorb and move along to more IoT blenders and worker vats.

I mean, yes, there's a whole bunch of poo poo going on which means that I ain't exactly thinking things will get better, because that's unlikely at best, at least from a personal perspective. But everyone who posts in C-SPAM is some level of hosed up. And the thing is, even once you accept your life is hosed up and it's gonna be pain until you die, there's the very inconvenient fact left that here I am, with "no life" and little to no ability to restore my prospects to a level a normal person would consider a starting point, I am, still, alive. And death will come in due time; probably in some unpredictable and utterly undignified fashion, as is its wont. So I'm going to bore myself to death (yes, yes, the joke's obvious) if I don't find something to do and someone to be, even if I'm real hosed up. And since all my previous goals, skills, hopes, dreams so on have been tossed into the wind, I'm utterly free to come up with bullshit that I find funny and sometimes even meaningful. I'm not sure if your goal is to either get me to shut up through shame (hah!), or to post about posters to get posters to stop posting about posters, or worst of all, try to "save" me from the "dunks" of Pizzaboy Nerdfantasy and Shapiro Cosplayer. Either way it's excusing someone's clown makeup, weak jokes and rubber chicken because they have a medical condition of having been born Pagliacci. Can it, shitlord.

mysterious frankie posted:Even if it did work perfectly and does what he says it will do, think about how product cycles go. It’s the equivalent of having an OG iPhone installed into your brain. In like four years the latest firmware updates won’t be compatible and if you want to get the Neuralink5, so you can get the security update that stops the Ukrainian hackers that keep puppeting you into wiring them money, you’ll have to go down to the strip mall and get a kid in a work polo who has a visible vaping rig bulge in his khakis reopen your bore hole and strip the neural lacing out, because you need the new higher bandwidth kind (if you get the exclusive Sorrow Blue lacing for an additional $2000 it shows you support the refugees of The Great Manhattan Flood), and even if you survive you still have a 30% chance of getting pink eye on your brain. It feels like an elaborate scheme to lie to you that you're owning something when you're really renting it. I got an iPad 3 back in 2012 for college for reading textbook PDFs. I do stuff like highlight important info in yellow, examples in green, make edge-case highlights at half opacity, and put in a sticky note icon to write notes in the margins when it seems like the author was bad at explaining something and I need to reword it to myself. At least it's still useful for what I got it for

At my work we use Microsoft Teams, and once a week it emails me 'insights' about how much time I spend on email, how much time I spend 'collaborating' on office 365 documents etc. It's really only a hop, skip and jump away from employers extrapolating meaning from that, like I should do more collaboration and less email (or something). Cos I post on my phone using the Awful app they'll never know what I really spend my time doing

I got those for a bit, and yeah they were creepy and also weird about determining metrics like basically calculating any time not booked as in a meeting in your microsoft calender, or spent in a Microsoft app as some sort of 'free time.' It wasn't as naked as calling it 'free time', but had some dismissive category like 'personal projects' And it would be very easy to expand on that as goofing off or inefficiency. The extra paranoia layer was how much those insight emails kept reassuring you those metrics were not shared with your boss. It also did include internet time, so yeah anyone goofing off and browsing on the work PC would have it noted.

doomers are insufferable but only because the truth is often insufferable too everyone knows the world is hosed, the loss of hope these past 20 years is well documented and easily observable all for very good concrete reasons. people are engaging in delusion theatrics every time they pull these "the world is actually not that bad!" meaningless platitudes no one really believes in, and sometimes i wonder whether those posters are legitimately clueless or know exactly what theyre doing and just stick fingers in their ears going "lalala humanity survived the ice age it will survive this too" just to not hang themselves from despair at least doomers are genuine in their misery, are humbled by facing the music. go-getters are these any concept that doesn't entertain the myth of endless growth and endless overcoming inside their broken reptilian brains is "not useful" or "not inspiring", because they've never known anything else if this world had a little less HOPE, and a little more BALLS, then maybe we wouldn't be up to our necks in so much poo poo. (i call this theory; the "Hope, Balls, poo poo" theory)
