It seems like the explosion was on a smaller pier that is 1-2kms away from the main container port. The grain elevator obviously is gone, but they may still be able to get in imports otherwise.

So in the past few months Lebanon has been dealing with coronavirus, a global economic depression, a financial mega implosion, the highest tensions with Israel in years, and now the country's largest port exploded smothering Beirut in toxic gas. Seems bad to me.

An old Sea Law news letter might have some history into how 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate sat around for 6 years.

https://twitter.com/NicijSamoSvoj/status/1290754052834369537?s=20

If you don't want to download the pdf:

quote:

On 23/9/2013, m/v Rhosus, flying the Moldovian flag, sailed from Batumi Port, Georgia heading to Biera in Mozambique carrying 2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate in bulk. En route, the vessel faced technical problems forcing the Master to enter Beirut Port. Upon inspection of the vessel by Port State Control, the vessel was forbidden from sailing. Most crew except the Master and four crew members were repatriated and shortly afterwards the vessel was abandoned by her owners after charterers and cargo concern lost interest in the cargo. The vessel quickly ran out of stores, bunker and provisions.

Various creditors came forward with claims against her. Our firm acting on instruction of these creditors obtained three arrest orders against the vessel. Efforts to get in touch with the owners, charterers and cargo owners to obtain payment failed. In the meantime, the Master and crew remaining on board were in jeopardy due to the shortage of stores and provisions. To make things worse, the crew were restrained on board the vessel owing to immigration restrictions. Diplomatic efforts were attempted to have the crew repatriated but without success. The crew subsequently approached us for assistance. Acting on compassionate grounds, we applied to the Judge “Of Urgent Matters” in Beirut for an order authorizing the crew to disembark and return home. Our application was based on the breach of the right to personal freedom which is protected under the Constitution of Lebanon and the International Convention of Human Rights and Personal Freedoms. Emphasis was placed on the imminent danger the crew was facing given the “dangerous” nature of the cargo still stored in ship’s holds.

The port authorities and the vessel’s agents were invited by the Judge to comment on our application. Our application eventually succeeded and the Judge ordered that necessary permits be issued for the crew to disembark and return home. The decision rendered by the Judge is considered of landmark importance because as it has established the principles that personal freedoms ought to be protected regardless of any administrative considerations and that the Judge “Of Urgent Matters” can intervene to ensure protection of these rights.

Owing to the risks associated with retaining the Ammonium Nitrate on board the vessel, the port authorities discharged the cargo onto the port’s warehouses. The vessel and cargo remain to date in port awaiting auctioning and/or proper disposal.

Long Time Defender of US-Saudi Relations gives good advice that will absolutely go unheeded:-

Main points are that saudi is 100% hosed financially and politically if they dont:-

1) Stop the Yemen war
2) Cancel NEOM or put it indefinitely on hold use the money to make sure people dont go bankrupt.
3) Immediately start decoupling from trump and building good relations with democrats, because they are absolutely going to punish MBS once trump is removed.

but of course, as with all good advice and arab dictatorships, you might as well yell at a wall.

I don't buy the welding explanation, seeing as the video footage clearly shows a shitload of fireworks going off before the nitrate warehouse goes boom. I also saw people initially saying there was only fifty tonnes of nitrate in that warehouse, presumably thanks to the initial haul being sold off and disposed of over the years since its capture. That's a much more sane size for the sort of explosion we saw, especially with flour from the grain elevator thrown in as an accelerant. If this was a proper three-kiloton boom, we wouldn't be getting video footage from eyewitnesses anywhere near as close, because they'd all be dead and their phones would be obliterated.

Remember that Oklahoma City was only two tonnes of ammonium nitrate. 2750 tonnes is just a silly number. It's happened before (in Halifax and Texas City), and it doesn't look like this.

Whatever the tonnage, I still can't believe they let any amount of ammonium nitrate sit around for 6 or 7 years. apparently it gets more volatile with age. I'm having trouble believing the welding story too but these are the same idiots who stored fireworks in the same warehouse. What an easily avoidable disaster...

i dunno but the lebanese political system seems like the most libertarian system in the world. that patchwork kinda "works" in the aftermath of a civil war where everyone basically agrees to disagree, so lebanon can go on looking something like a country. but it doesn't seem like it's really working any longer when it can't keep the lights on, can't collect the garbage, and can't stop its ports from blowing up in massive explosions and destroying the capital. something has to give eventually.
