Kinda surprised it took 7 years to go up, tbh. (If that previous post about the shipment being impounded in 2013 was right) That was a ticking time bomb in every sense. If that was, in fact, 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, then we're still looking at over a kiloton worth of TNT-equivalent at maximum efficiency. Even accounting for lower-order detonation, that's still easily in Davy Crockett territory.

There's always an "asterisk" factor for explosions like this because even though matter can't ever be ~completely~ destroyed it can drat well sure be pulverized and vaporized by massive overpressures. And using Nukemap just as rough guide, it looks like it happened in one of the best worst places to minimize immediate deaths.

Gonna take a wild guess that anyone who was closer than that freeway is likely in very small pieces if not literally dust on the wind. In order to do that kind of damage that was at least 40 psi of overpressure in the area. Anyone that close was probably just snuffed out. Pretty sure above 40psi (easy way to tell is was the shockwave visible, because that means the air is moving at or above the speed of sound) you just die, especially if you were in the open or didn't have reinforced concrete between you and the blast.

They are so hosed. Their economy was already collapsing, they are dependent on grain imports to feed their population, there was already a bread shortage (bread shortage!! one of the most basic foodstuffs!!), and the port of Beirut is by far their most important port, to import grain and fuel and other bulk goods the country needs. You can clearly see that only the person in the top left video happened to be filming during the first (comparatively smaller) explosion, which caused everyone else to grab their phones and catch the second, much bigger explosion.
