i woulda liked if aloy was allowed to crush bussy like geralt though, it bugged me that they have a woman protag but shes essentially got the sensibilities of a child because her dad sheltered her. shes a young adult out on her own for the first time meeting new people, one of whom is a hot shirtless king

HZD had pretty great facial animations for its time, it was the first game I remember thinking to myself that it almost got out of the uncanny valley. It hasn't aged all that well though. It can't stand up next to full mo-capped stuff like Death Stranding

introducing aloy without any romance stuff was one of their goals i think ^^^ hzd has clear facial tiers where npcs that you meat once look pretty bad but the main cast is good yeah

One thing I appreciate about HZDs writing is that it gives zero fucks about "both sides"-ing during any of the backstory, even when the US is involved iirc, once it becames clear that Faro's robots remove the chance of US casualties and limit eyewitness accounts, the US immediately starts invading third-world countries, converts anyone who resists into robot-feeding organic slurry, and enslaves the survivors into what are basically state-supported corporate fiefdoms It didn't pull any punches, and I was pleasantly surprised/horrified

The backstory was probably the best part of the game's writing, even if I'm still not a fan of Sobeck basically being this near-perfect Christ figure to the point that GAIA's solution to poo poo is just "well if I just clone Sobeck she'll be amazing and solve everything."

I figured that was just GAIA's AI being "human" enough that when everything went tits-up, her first idea was to make a clone of her mother to fix everything for her. Also whoever fixed things was going to need to be able to access Zero Dawn sites which means beating scanners.

aloy is a white messiah figure who turns up and dispels the superstitions of the tribes, imo she would be a lot better character if she was just a tribal girl who found that head chip the actual well written stuff is the backstory of what happened to the world though i ultimately felt the reveal was a bit silly where they dont have the resources or time to crack the password to the killer robots, they instead DO have the time to create several AI gods and ridiculous enormous projects needed to restart the world

Tsushima post: I beat the game a couple days ago, over 80% of the achievements / map stuff done. My thoughts are collected and I just need to vent a bit in order to retire the game...feel free to ignore. The ending scene is very good, but very derivative if you've been watching this kind-of stuff (jidaigeki / chambara) since your teens like I have. Not worth going through the game to see the ending, but still left me feeling somewhat satisfied with the experience. The combat is so very good, but not from an "gameplay innovation" standpoint. It's like mo-cap porn, and I'm not being pejorative about that. I genuinely love seeing all the slashes and enemy movement animations interacting. Enjoying the entire game is really akin to appreciating a HK action film: you're there to appreciate the movement of bodies, not so much the narrative. Someone needs to tell Sucker Punch to do a wu-xia title; in fact, they probably should've gone to China instead of Japan in the first place: you'd have more liberties to tell a legitimate melodrama. A moving story that wasn't overtly imperialistic and flat-out boring would've been nice.... The "bad" in Tsushima is mostly the outdated game design. I've seen a billion posts on this in this thread and they're all correct. Also, the entire facade of using Asian-American actors to hide a "competently respectful" island-invasion drama *COUGH* *COUGH* nags at me. OK, carry on.

I really dislike that we have this setting of people who all have their own beliefs and superstitions and religions based on the post-apoc/rebirth history, but we see it all from the perspective of someone who knows from the start that all of it's bullshit. It felt jarring when I played it around the same time as I did W3 and AC:O, which both lean a lot further into their settings.

Also, last thing wrt Tsushima, the devs need to accept that dodge rolling is incredibly OP and simply remove the rubber-banding on enemy attacks. The gameplay should be more QTE, less hand-eye.

I feel like there was a shitload of stuff I missed, despite beating it and I don't really know what it's about at all except the if you wanna drink beer and get drunk or you wanna smoke weed and get high aspect that there's no point to the game

After the halfway point I would just arrow headshot from horse and Triangle QTE slash to start every fight because it's cooler and feels better than Standoffs. ---- Braid is a good game, but it was "discussed" and lauded way more than it deserved to be. True fact: Super Mario World 2 seemed at the time and still seems way more subversive than Braid. e: seemed at the time more subversive of platformers / general game design.
