Holland is the only Spida man to ever sound like he might be from NYC so he's not bad at it. I think it's the constantly having to listen to American accents in movies and TV that make English actors better at American accents than the other way around.

Cush Jumbo's American accent is dang near perfect and I can't believe I only see her on small TV shows like Good Fight and whatever UK mini series.

He's Welsh? Wow, never would have guessed that. I've always kind of felt that he was putting on some kind of accent and I haven't seen much of him outside of The Americans and Perry Mason, but I guess I always thought he was an American suppressing a regional accent not a completely foreign one.

He can't do Cockney, though.

GQ posted:

I was going to ask if you’re ever going to use your Welsh accent on television, but then I realized you did—playing the villain in the last-ever episode of Columbo. Did you know it was going to be the last going in?

No, no, we didn't at all. And that was a crushing moment for me because I always pride myself on working hard at dialect and accents. And Peter Falk, said “I want [your character] to be a Cockney from London.” So I worked on my Cockney accent. And he picked me up at LAX—Peter Falk picked me up when I landed at LAX. Unbelievable. In his Range Rover. Walked into arrivals. It still blows me away.

Nice.

Then he goes, "I want to rehearse right now." I was like, "Oh! Okay." So we drove to Universal, we drove to his office, and we're rehearsing for a few minutes and I'm giving my best London Cockney that I've worked on. And he went [Peter Falk accent] "Where are you from?" And I said, "Oh, I'm from a place called Cardiff in Wales." He said, [Peter Falk accent] "Why don't you play him as a guy from Cardiff in Wales." And I was like, “Oh my God, Peter Falk just destroyed my Cockney accent.” So it was kind of a crushing moment for me, but yes, I did get to use my own native accent in the last-ever Columbo.

How cool is that though? The star of the program you're guesting in picks you up at the airport himself, and it's Peter frickin' Falk?

I started it two days ago and just got to a scene where someone exclaimed "The butts have escaped!" with ensuing chaos and its pure poetry. Also Alan Tudyk is doing his best Mark Hamill Joker and its fantastic.

Just finished the bynars episode from tng s1. I'm just grinning from ear to ear, what a fantastic little adventure. I love how riker spends the first 15 minutes just loving around, wandering from room to room, almost like he's trying to find the plot of the episode and ends up having all these little interactions with the crew, chilling in the holodeck, and —whoops, looks like the ship reactor went critical and we have five minutes to evacuate the ship lol. The way riker and picard spring into action and methodically investigate the situation is so juicy, their interactions are so natural and professional, the way they bounce off each other is great. Everything with the bynars is cool too.

After this I happened to catch the first episode of Lower Decks from a YouTube ad and now I'm pissed again. What a soulless, joyless, jokeless experience.

Even if the first season has some problems the show had a really strong ensemble cast. There's a reason why the TNG actors still talk to each other a lot today. Doubt the actors from Voyager do that.

Watched though epiIsode 6 of Harley Quinn. It's fine. A few solid laughs here and there, pretty fun. Ultimately I felt like it was a pale imitation of Venture Bros. without the singular vision or grounded stakes that makes that show so good. Consquences of actions are thrown out the window for the sake of a gag and that makes it hard for me to get invested, because anything can happen at any time for the sake of cartoon-logic wackiness.

If I was actively itching for a DC show with all my favorite superheros and villains this would be a great option, but I'm not. I don't feel it's as well-written or essential as a lot of folks on the forums have said. I might watch more of it if the mood strikes me, though, and I'll definitely check in on reviews of the second season to see if any of my concerns are alleviated. It's nice to know there's another fun comic book show around, but I guess that ultimately just isn't my thing.

idk man it’s just a funny show I don’t really know how to respond to that. I guess a lot of the essential stuff comes from the queer representation which IS very cool and good but I mostly just think it’s funny as poo poo. certainly funnier than the clips I’ve seen from venture bros which has always looked very.....self-satisfied, to me. this is just having a fun, violent, goofy time with comic book characters.

zoux

Also a big change in the focus and very, very little Joker. Not that Tudyk's joker is bad, just that the character kind of warps the stories around him

I get it. I've also been watching Lower Decks, and even though I have some of the same issues (no grounded stakes, no real consequences for actions, Looney Tunes logic while asking us to invest in characters) ultimately I just think it's a funny show that I enjoy watching. I feel like most people who aren't enjoying LD came in with expectations in the wrong place, which is ultimately what I feel happened with me and HQ since I've seen it so often compared to Venture Bros.

They're both comedic cartoons for adults set in the world of superheroes, but I think those surface-level details are where the comparisons end. VB isn't for everyone, but I feel what sets it apart from many of its contemporaries is its ethos in its approach to its characters, where they're treated as real people with complex internal lives who are psychologically impacted by the events of the show and act accordingly. Harley Quinn has shades of this with how it treats her past trauma, but overall it really feels like it has more in common with The Brave and the Bold than VB. I'm not saying that's a bad thing (BatB is fantastic after all) but I probably just went into the show with the wrong mindset.
