I had a really weird electric plan at my last apartment in the Dallas area, where I would pay over double per kWh if I didn't break 1000 kWh, or roughly triple if I went over 1500 (vs what I paid from 1000-1499). This wasn't tiered usage - it was all-in. So if I used 1499 kWh, I got hit with one rate. If I used 1501 kWh, I got HAMMERED with all of it being billed at triple. If I went under 500, I got slammed with an extra $100 underusage fee. :stare:

Water wasn't metered (there was a meter on the water heater for some reason, but I yanked the battery out of it and nothing ever happened :iiam:) aside from subdividing based on some weird formula based on square footage and # of ppl in the place (I don't get why my having 750 sq ft meant I paid more than someone with 400 sq ft....), but I could check my power usage every 15 minutes online. I had a friend with 3 kids doing laundry at my place on the regular except in the winter, just so I could break that 1k threshold. Winter, not so much - my water heater (electric) was on the patio in an uninsulated closet, and I had electric heat. I had one month where I hit 1499 kWh - I knew when the billing cycle ended, checked my meter, and I was at 1498... I immediately flipped the main and kept the power off until early the next morning.

I never thought I'd be so happy to move back to an area with a city-owned power company. I get fee'd to death with street, trash, "clean neighborhood streets", and water stuff, but the actual electricity is dirt cheap. And tiered, so I pay one rate for the first 500 kWh, another rate from 501-1000, etc (plus a base fee of $10). Overall it still winds up being slightly cheaper than most apartments I've lived in. MUCH cheaper than the last one I was in. For this month, water, sewer, trash, random city fees, gas, and electricity, is $213. That's for a loving house. $114 of that is power. $17 is water, <$15 was gas, the rest is just random city fees. Gas was less than water (despite us having all gas appliances and me cooking multiple meals a day on the stove - my roommate uses a toaster oven for everything for some reason tho, doesn't even use the microwave :iiam:).

As a Normally Very Responsible Tenant, my previous place had water included and this place (in SoCal!) has water and electricity included. This does nothing to discourage me from taking long showers and running the AC more than I probably actually need.

I do dearly miss one place in Stockholm that had no separate metering of water, electricity or hot water (district heating!) for about 500 apartments. Since they were such a big customer they got really good pricing on all of this. Some jagoff at a yearly HOA meeting wondered if maybe we should switch to individual metering and the board basically told them to sit down, shut up and enjoy cheap utilities.

I lived in one place that was "utilities included", but they had hour meters on the AC units. The lease stipulated that you could only use so many hours during the lease period.

The hour meters ran with the fan, so just running the fan would run the meter. There was a switch behind the filter to run the fan nonstop or only with the AC/heat. They shipped defaulted to running nonstop.

The wires to mine, and nearly every other one I took a passing glance at while I lived there, had been cut a long time ago. These were hotel-style PTACs.

If you want to control how/when your tenants control the HVAC, DON'T TEAR OUT THE CHILLER YOU DUMBFUCKS.

My house had a Pushmatic panel in it when I bought it and it worked fine but it was beyond full - it had several tandem breakers installed and some circuits were double tapped. I had it replaced because there was no room to add anything and I needed a dryer outlet. It had 20 spaces and the replacement panel ended up with 32 of 42 spaces filled. The electricians who did the work said they were scratching their heads a little about why a house with 100A service and a relatively small panel needed such a big replacement until they got the cover off. :v:

Making it more fun, you only have the "power to choose" in certain parts of Texas. Where I lived when I first moved to the Austin area, I was locked into a co-op with high rates. Now I'm locked into Austin Energy, which has downright reasonable rates. I think it's mainly Round Rock (suburb north of Austin) that "has the power to choose". Hell, at my last DFW apartment, if I literally lived across the street, I was locked into GP&L. I could choose my retail provider (basically who billed me) where I lived.

The rule of 6 didn't become a thing until the mid to late late 70s, IIRC? I think I've only ever seen one Pushmatic IRL, but Mike Holt forums and others make them sound like God's greatest gift to circuit protection of that era. They're supposed to be one of the best. Shame they actually trip when there's an issue laughs in Zinsco flames

I understand why you can't give loads of notice on changing the quarantine rules because everyone rushes to get in under the wire, dodging the point, but as you point out the quarantine should be on the other leg of the trip and this government have no consistency from one point to another, loving omnishambles before you even get to the class warfare that is the exam results algorithms.

For the Americans drowning on their own bad news that haven't read ours, because kids missed school they asked the teachers for their expected/calculated grades up to that point, then completely ignored it and gave them an average based on their schools/local demographic, randomly downgrading 200,000+ results from state schools, some as far as U for unclassified. Mysteriously not a single pupil from private schools like those the overwhelming majority of the government went to got downgraded... They then charge you £180 to challenge a result but issued a warning that if your challenge was successful and you get your grade raised someone else's will be reduced to compensate, that's emotional blackmail.

Also a casual reminder that most of our media seem to have forgotten about, it's absolutely legal to cross the channel and claim asylum. You wouldn't believe it if you read any newspapers at all though.

Phone question for people in general, my Moto G6 is crapping out, charging very slowly or not at all, very short battery life, randomly powering off etc. I really like Motorolas, are there any half decent new phones that aren't loving massive? When you're pulling a butt you don't really care about building up a thick hearty bark so surface treatment isn't super critical ime. As long as it's got some rub on it and enough salt (through the rub or otherwise) it'll do the thing.

Thanks advanced grilling friends... I am doing a larger clod than my usual set of 2 sliced ~two-pounders, (this is a 5.75 pound bone-in chunk of some very nice organic meat) and I have never tried dry-brining, wet brine is my usual go-to, I also usually use a combo of apple juice, apple cider vinegar, and - this one's slightly weird, but it's a winner - rum - with the kosher salt & rosemary & liquid smoke when I do that mix) but I wanted to try something new. I'm likely going to season it with this rub + a lot more habenero & peppers since I like it spicy.

Don't expect much from this, but suggestions for an upgrade from a OnePlus 6T? Has to have a pretty vanilla Android experience and Snapdragon 8xx series CPU. Used is fine. As long as it's a modernish phone that already has Android 10 available, and can be upgraded to 11..

I'm kinda eyeing the 7T. The 6T still works fine, it just has an annoying amount of screen burn (whoever had it before me obviously used google maps all day erry day... so likely a gig economy driver), and I have enough money burning a hole in my pocket to drop on something better, though it'd have to be from Swappa.

The Pixel 4a is already ruled out due to CPU performance - it would be a pretty large downgrade in performance vs the 6T. Or should I just stick with the 6T? The screen burn is the only reason I really want to switch phones anyway.

So I have this 1992 Subaru SVX that I bought cheapish as a parts car ~10 years ago, a little battered but (mostly) mechanically sound, with about 132k miles on it. When I got it, the brakes were not working due to a rotted out hardline and so I never drove it anywhere except (very cautiously) up and down my street at ~10 or so mph. The PO had it parked for who knows how long before I got it, although the motor was running fine when I took ownership.

Life got in the way, and I never used it for its intended purpose (as an engine / transmission donor for my '94). It sat around forever at the front of the driveway, collecting moss, spiders, and mildew. I had it moved in October of last year to my new place (on a flatbed) where it was dropped in the yard :banjo: along with the sister car (that currently has no motor and is missing a door) and largely ignored it over the winter.

Yesterday, I decided to go out and see if it would turn over by hand, which it did. I checked fluids, the oil looks perfect - I think the PO must have changed it just before I got it, because it looks brand new. Decided what the hell, I'll connect the lithium pack to it and see if it cranks.

After a slight extended crank, the loving thing started and ran, on the 10+ year old gas in the tank :stare: which I was, uh, not expecting. This car is still running on gas the PO had put in before I got it. It even moved under its own power after a few minutes of running - when I first started it, it would cut fuel and stumble every time I tapped the gas. After a bit, I was able to rev it and put it into gear (and almost backed it into my van at a decent speed, because of the aforementioned lack of brakes) And - despite the fact that the exhaust isn't currently in place - it actually sounded really good, and didn't seem to be misfiring at all. I guess now I'm going to go on a scavenger hunt for the missing parts and see if I can slap it back together and make a runner out of it. Current parts needed list (subject to change) is as follows:

Battery (new)
Cat converters (in storage)
Cat back exhaust (on sister car)
Pre-bent brake line (in storage)
Headlights, center bar, side markers (in trunk of sister car)
Exhaust and headlight mounting hardware (??? I have this somewhere, but hosed if I know where. Probably will get new bolts)
Wiper blades (new)

And I have to figure out something for the interior. While not in terrible physical shape, it smells very strongly of grandma's basement. Think once it runs / drives / stops reliably, I'll probably take it to a detail shop and hope they'll be able to figure out how to demoldify it. There's also a cracked windshield, which on a "normal" car isn't a huge deal, but last I checked (admittedly years ago), SVX windshields were basically unobtainium. Not sure if that's changed recently although I doubt it. Will probably end up having to live with that if I get it going. Mainly kind of stoked that it actually ran.

Once I get some fresh fuel (and maybe a fuel system cleaner as well) into it, I'm going to run it up to temp and keep an eye on it to see if anything leaks or any other shenanigans are happening. Given the above, is there anything else (aside from the obvious) I should watch out for?

SVXs are cool. I've heard nightmare stories about the transmission, though. From mu understanding, they're a weak point and made of unobtanium.

For the smell, try an ozone machine. I've had fantastic luck on many cars with mine. I've got my son's Avalon that was a HEAVY smoker's car and you absolutely cannot tell... all the smoking odor was removed and hasn't reappeared years later.

Correct, the original SVX transmissions were a weak point - my understanding is that they were from the Subaru parts bin and not designed for the weight of the porky SVX (strike one), and on top of that, tuned for "soft" shifts, which turned the internal heat up to eleven and burned them up. The fix for that was to swap in 4.44 transmissions from the Outback which were able to handle the load better. In fact, the main reason I bought this car was because it had some kind of fancy high-dollar "built" 4.44 transmission in it, although I don't remember the details.

I thought of using an ozone machine, but I'm also trying to eliminate mold growth / spores rather than just the smell. I fear just attacking the smell won't get to the root cause. That said, I'd be curious to know if those cheap >$100 ozone generators on Amazon are worth anything at all, or if they're just junk.
