I think they basically constructed a pretty advanced character generator, kind of how like EVE online lets you mess around with your portrait for hours doing tiny little details and it's just used as an afterthought. There's lots of different zones on characters faces that can be completely randomized to get a lot of variety.

I was watching some youtuber and the guy puts like an Emperor's crown on a rando kid? Like it's kinda funny but is there no restriction for what you look like? Like you can be some chump count but select the garb of the Holy Roman Emperor?

I like CK2's portraits fine, but those early concepts look like I'm playing some lovely freemium ios game and the king should be saying I can spend 300 gems (only $5.99 for 1000) to instantly refill my leves and get a +10 vassal opinion. I was wary when they started showing off 3d models and got Oblivion flashbacks, but the ones we've seen look pretty drat good too.
