Just link it with img tags? Also, on the topic of morality, in my mind Mookie displays what I think of as the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" problem. I never watched Buffy growing up, but I did watch it in its entirety with a roommate/friend who was a fan. I said that I thought it was funny that Buffy was a slayer and was considered a good guy, even if she needed "darkness" in her to protect humans, when what she actually was was a human supremacist. She was aghast, but my point was that Buffy routinely kills/fucks up demons that a) don't appear to be killing anybody, or at least like maybe just one or two people and b) weren't planning the apocalypse or anything. The framing device of demon dimensions makes them more like aliens than evil incarenate anyway, and pointedly Buffy does not kill Willow when she's on a rampage. Her reply was "well they don't have souls because they aren't human". And see, there's the problem. The demons seem like they are thinking, rational individuals. We have examples of good demons who don't have souls (Spike) or some who might (Anya). But an in-universe rationalization allows some antagonists to be declared irredeemable and destroyable, and some to be redeemable and therefor not murderable. Now, the point isn't to say Buffy, or Doom, is problematic because they present a simplistic morality tale. Stories can have whatever internal logic people want, and it's fine if sometimes the bad guys are just slavering monsters, not everything has to be read as a political allegory. But inreal life, where all our enemies are human, or animals that we know aren't acting deliberatly maliciously, you personally don't get to be the arbiter of morality. So it's always been interesting to me that a media property like Buffy can set up situations where it seems like the good guys are indiscriminantly murdering and causing suffering to beings who aren't really distinguishable from protagonist characters, but the narrative can justify it. It just speaks to how malleable the idea of justice, or good, can be. That's why, in general, I actually think the alignement system can be fun, even if it's an explicit rule of metaphysics in the setting and is enforced strictly and arbitrarily. If your DM is being a dick about it, or always insists on it, then I can see the problem, but if it's just to try and set a new set of rules to operate around as you play the game or tell the story, whatever. But with Mookie, he both explicitly invokes the lawful good trope, in the Buffy the Vampire Sense of being the good guy who fights the bad guy, and writes stories that aren't even allegory, they are just straight transpositions of real-world conflicts into a fantasy (and star-power is really more Spelljammer than it is Star Trek) setting. And that's where it becomes a thing to analyze. His fantasies don't discriminate between the simple morality narrative, and the complex real world. So his statements on rebels who dont' play by the rules take on an apologist, or almost fascist tone. I don't think Mookie liking DND, or even using the stupid square grid meme for his characters, would bother me nearly so much I I had not read him use the term ethnic cleansing in his stories. In fact, he used complex real world themes a lot even in DD, but rationalizes them away through simple good/evil decisions. With the context of star power, we can see that that's actually how Mookie sees the world, and that's a big problem. Through his art we are seeing his worldview and ideaology, quite clearly, and it's not a good one. Beelzebufo fucked around with this message at 16:41 on Aug 28, 2020 |

Alignment Talk posted:Alignments in D&D Alignments are completely unnecessary even in the confines of D&D. In 5E, the Paladin's divine sense (formerly "detect evil") instead lets them sense any Celestials, Fiends, and Undead within 60 ft. Doppleganger trouble? Tough luck, the Paladin can't do anything about it. Everything else that claims to target an alignment actually targets a creature type as well: the spell Protection from Good and Evil explicitly protects from aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead and has nothing to do with the actual alignment of the creature. True neutral fey or elemental? Protection from Good and Evil still fucks with them. You can drop alignments from D&D 5E without any repercussions whatsoever. It only exists now as a conceit for lazy GMs to not bother coming up with interesting cultures or reasons two groups of people might want to fight and to make it ok for the players to kill orcs and other "always chaotic evil" sentient creatures without talking to them first. VVV That too. PoptartsNinja fucked around with this message at 18:46 on Aug 28, 2020 |

And for that reason I respect someone who ran a parody Twitter account much more than I do Mookie I'm late to the talk about Luna, but I agree that as a character, consciously written to have a place in the narrative, she is a bad character because she primarily exists as a plot device for angst, or an accessory for Dominic to obsess over. Often both at once, resulting in emphasis being put on how something affects Dominic more than her. I think there might've been one instance where something bad happened to Luna, just for the story to go "oh but it also happened to Dominic too! Woe is he!", but I've only heard about that third-hand and I'd rather just wait for it to come up in the recap than have it confirmed or denied. The suspense(?) is better that way.

I think this is the infertility subplot. This reinforces my earlier point about the fake flaws Mookie gives his terrible characters and dovetails in nicely with his misogyny, because clearly in Mookie's mind, the worst thing that can happen to a woman is having her ability to poo poo out babies jeopardized since she has no other value. When Dominic and Luna go to the alterist, she tests them and finds that they cannot conceive. Luna sobs for a strip or two, finally having a problem of her own (kind of) but the alterist immediately clarifies that actually it's because Dominic's shooting blanks, so this too was just about him. I don't think they consider adoption, and shortly thereafter, Luna sacrifices her remaining eggs to a dragon to transform them into seven dragon balls and restore fertility to the barren orc kingdom's land so they can grow crops. Mookie would feel the need to specify the sex wasn't rape regardless of what the characters were. You know, this would be fine if the thought bubble with the heart was connected to both of them - two geeks bonding over a common interest and being on the same wavelength as they work together, that can be cute. But instead it's all completely one-sided, we don't get anything from Luna's point of view, just Deegan getting creepier and creepier with no sign any of it is reciprocated. Yes, it's not nerd love, it's the creepy fantasy of the perfect woman who just happens to share all your interests. But she has to be perfectly passive, because an actively sexual woman is intimidating. On that note... Chapter 4: Into the Woods [Part 1] The story picks up immediately with Dominic having a vision of Gregory being attacked, or so he thinks, when he was trying to make sure Luna wouldn't friendzone him. They race off on a rescue mission, and an ok pun/joke is had This power will never be used again, but it's ok because just like GoT travel distance becomes a non-issue shortly after this. Dominic scries and instantly faints when he sees what he thinks is his brother dying. Stunt and Bumper, who in typical Mookie fashion were waiting just off screen, show up to threaten our heroes and for Stunt to be a raging misogynist. The thing about stunt though is that his misogyny is like fascist misogyny. It's little boy "girls are icky and dumb and can't do anything" combined with what is presented as a sincere desire to murder them all. It agains speaks to Mookie's lack of understanding on these issues. Stunt is called misogynistic in the comic, but nobody does anything about it, yet his misogyny is sociopathic. Again Mookie viewing actual social ills through the lense of cackling chaotic evil. Bumper is the first mention of orcs. Like someone mentioned, eventually its stated that orcs and human don't intermix, but at this point obviously orcs are a race, and yet still everybody flips out about Luna's tusks like they are the most insane, ugly thing. Get ready for a lot of this! Mookie loves this bait and switch, I think more because it allows him to imagine that his favorites weren't actually going to start murdering people with fiery death if the bad guys didn't run away. Dominic had a vision and thinks Greg is dead! The tension would last exactly.... One strip. I hate this interaction so much. I just hate it. It's not fun, or how brother acts. It's just terrible. Instantly Greg has the old freudian slip joke about Luna's hosed up teeth. Man those teeth must be so terrible. Of course Dominic knows all about what ever is going on right now. In keeping with MOokie's standard way of writing smart people, Dominic has obscure knowledge at the ready whenever the plot demands. Again, what does Mookie think misogyny is, and why is Bumper so cool with being partners with a stab-happy psychopath. He's more annoyed that anything else. Stunt and Bumper are captives of a little halfing or saiyan child or something, called Dirk the Mighty. This reminds me of star power characters all calling each other slurs. Mookie doesn't know what people are. Again, Dominic just has all the answers. I actually think learning about the dryad with his powers is fine, but he's invoked his magic know things ability 4 times already this story. It sucks the drama out of everything. And here's where the puns start getting a little grating to me. Stunt and Bumper have been taken prisoner by Dirk, and once again Mookie slips into emasculating insults. Again, just sort of interesting for one of those geeky, nerdy guys who was obviously bullied a lot. Awful pun. Flows terribly and only works in print. 0/10 We find out that Dirk is the forest ogre, he has shapeshifting abilities, and is so mighty everyone loses conciousness when he changes. I don't hate this. I kind of like Dirk. Thankfully, being unconcious is just what Dominic needed for more plot helpful visions, this time from the sylvan oracle, who just so happens to be who they were all trying to find! Thank goodness. Again, the sylvan oracle kind of works for me. Aethetically I like her look, and I even find the verbal tick funny and endearing. Good work Mookie. Dominic wakes up and knows what everyone has to do. But no, there's some contrived drama about how Dirk can't follow them, he has to stay and fight, because the oracle didn't explicitly say he should help. In order to convince him not to stay and fight the baddies, Dominic resorts to Mookietrope #7: Manipulation as a good guy move. Here using Dirk's love for the dryad as a way to motivate him, by insinuating that Stunt and Bumper would molest her. Again, not so terrible a plot development right now, but important to note as a harbinger of things to come. Dominic is a smug rear end in a top hat, but we all knew that. But here comes trouble... Invisible Clergy posted:So you're not wrong, but I think there's another dynamic at play here. Mookie's seen minorities calling each other the Bad Word and is blind to nuance and context, so since Greg had the bit with the tooth puns earlier, he's like, "broken the hearts" with Luna by saying slurs about her deviation from the mean, so now she's allowed to do the same to him without it jeopardizing her status as the plaster saint Madonna who isn't like Other Girls, which is why she isn't framed as bad, unlike the Lynn's Brook townspeople who did the exact same thing like 10 comics ago. And now we’re introduced to Gregory, the other major protagonist that the comic would probably have been better off with if most of his characterization had been left on the cutting room floor. He also has the dubious distinction of being the main focus of the single (non-offensively) dumbest story arc in the entire comic’s run, and that’s not something being said lightly.
