Marvel's also just a stupid powerful brand name. Like, in the boardgame space, there's Arkham Horror: The Card Game, an amazing, thematic, mechanically fun game that's gotten praise for a while. I've struggled to play it with anyone nearby for years. The same company made a Marvel card game with muddled, less tight mechanics that most agree is an inferior game, but it shattered Arkham in sales. I can get tons of friends to play it multiple times with ease, to the point where they actively ask me when the next expansion's coming out. A Marvel videogame is gonna sell if it's even half-decent and flashy enough to look fun in a trailer. It sounds like the actual presentation is hitting for people even if the gameplay isn't, which is more than enough to push sales nowadays. Heck, that's basically AAA games in a nutshell now anyway.

Apparently the owner of Lab Zero (Skullgirls, Indivisible) decided that the best response to complaints of harassment was to lay off every single employee So functionally Lab Zero doesn't exist anymore and if it does rebuild it'll be entirely made up of the kind of people who hear this story and think "yeah that's a guy I want to work for"

I dunno about Shadowrun but the later versions of cyberpunk definitely incorporate wireless connections since they were big nerds who read Ghost in the Shell (for that matter wi-fi was already a thing in Neuromancer). But it takes a bit of work to not make wi-fi hackers not feel like wizards, plus there's the whole thing where the first step to any good security is turn off wi-fi or hav it not linked to your important systems, which is where the whole shoot-cable-to-hack stuff comes from. One of the editions of Cyberpunk went all in on the wireless nanotech post-human stuff and everyone hated it, because, well, when you can turn a chair into grey goo with a glance it isn't cyberpunk anymore.

I mean yeah Avengers is gonna sell based on the fact that it's the most popular media franchise in any western country, but in terms of long-term staying power and a dedicated fanbase that will actually engage with these microtransactions I just don't think there's any way. People fell for Fallout76 and Anthem, people will buy literally anything

I have seen people agree that the game is less story driven so it isn’t as rewarding narratively. However all the praise I see for the game is how streamlined and easy to play it was compared to Arkham. I tried Arkham myself when it came out and bounced off right away because it was definitely more complicated and I didn’t love the theme, but Marvel was perfect because it was easier to pick up and play while still retaining a good strategical element to it. It’s all good if you don’t like Marvel personally because of how it plays compared to a game you like more, but there’s zero need to create a bullshit narrative where people like an “inferior” game just because it’s Marvel.

Man I loved the Arkham card game. If I had a stable group to play it with I'd have sunk a lot of money into it by now. A similar game with a Marvel skin sounds incredibly dull. The concept that you were just barely clinging on to your life/sanity and that you're drastically outmatched by the various eldritch horrors is a huge part of the appeal. Playing as a bunch of superheroes sounds like a bad time.

Lab Zero doesn't own the Skullgirls IP and the publisher that does had already severed professional ties with Mike and they're going to still be working on stuff with the company that does the mobile version and hopefully a lot of the people who left.
