Yeah, it's actually a riff on March of the Wooden Soliders.

It plays on both Thanksgiving and Christmas on WPIX 11 and it's loving brutal. My mom demands we watch it for both holidays ever year. It also features an unauthorized appearance of a live action Mickey Mouse. Played by a monkey in a Mickey costume.

IIRC it was actually semi-authorized, sort of a gentleman's agreement, along with using the "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" song. Keep in mind Disney didn't have a huge amount of clout yet. It was 1934; Mickey himself had only been around for about 5 years, and they hadn't done any movies yet.

My guess is they were always going to do the free release on Disney Plus, but were being shady about when because if it was a phenomenon they could extend the window for it being paid. I would bet the lackluster reviews combined with general grumbling led to them just announcing what they were always going to do.

I do think poor reviews of Mulan will hurt it a lot more than they otherwise would, given the circumstances. There are enough barriers to seeing this thing that it's a lot easier to just not bother.

I was about to say that that was just a dumb rumor added post mortem of the Harry Potter series by Rowling to claw herself back into relevancy by courting, and fundamentally misunderstanding, the "woke" crowd, but it turns out woman!Nagini appears in one of those Fantastic Animals movies.

So I guess I'll just say "gently caress Rowling" instead

Why didn't they have her do that fancy move to kick the arrow back when it was in flight from being shot from the bad guy down there? Why did whoever that is need to catch it, then gently toss it into the air before she did that move?

Just watched Mulan

It was passable. Visuals were very pretty, and the Wuxia-style action was good but it just made me wish I was watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or some other Wuxia film where it was done with wires and practical effects rather than CGI

The gang of three’s replacements were interchangeable and didn’t do anything.

Mushu’s replacement, the phoenix, didn’t do anything.

Donnie Yen didn’t get to do anything.

Jet Li as the emperor was making mouth movements for English words but they still dubbed him and it’s super duper blaringly obvious, just atrocious lip sync

The new character, the witch, was alright. She had some cool transformations.

Every time they used one of the song lyrics as dialogue or the melody of a song came up in the score it made me miss the songs. I showed them to my fiancé on youtube afterwards.

Final verdict: better than Lion King and B&TB remakes, not as good as Aladdin and Jungle Book remakes.

More complicated I guess for her to kick it in such a way that it would turn around and then fly back toward the guy

Yeah, it was “okay.” It had a few bright spots but it didn’t lean in heavily enough to the wuxia style and overplayed some bits that I felt weren’t important or interesting. As mentioned it criminally underused some of the cast. I could have done with about a half dozen less CG phoenix shots.

For a family of four on a Friday movie night it was fine, I’ve paid more for worse.

I mean, seems a valid take. They half-assedly imitate various devices and styles without actually understanding them, and end up a tone-deaf, tedious mess.

Live action 101 Dalmations was probably far less of a Big Thing as a project, and mostly built around Cruella being a lot of fun to portray. The big live action remakes have the blockbuster problem of being overmanaged and overhyped to the point where they end up incoherent design by committee that gets by on marketing gimmicks but collapses without it. (Hell, some people are starting to bring up how the MCU isn't nearly as fun without the hype train)
