So, what’s been the source of the Stars’ success, if not their formerly great goaltending? For starters, they’ve made vast improvements in their special teams play while in the bubble. During the regular season, Dallas converted just 21.1 percent of its power play opportunities (13th in the league) and had a penalty kill percentage of 79.7 (17th in the league). Those numbers have jumped quite a bit during the playoffs: The Stars have converted 27.3 percent of their power play opportunities (fifth in the league) and have a penalty kill percentage of 83.3 (ninth in the league) in the bubble.

Stats nerds miss the point, more at eleven.

They say the goaltending hasn't been as good as it was in the regular season. This is true! They then say that clearly the reason for the Stars success is not goaltending. The stats lead this poor dingus astray--aside from the Avalanche series Khudobin has been THE reason the Stars have made it this far.

I get what he is trying to say, I do--but to dismiss the goaltending as "formerly" great really shows your rear end.

Yeah I wonder about the other times a #1 player has been out but a team still won the cup.

The only one off the top of my head is Letang with the Pens in 2017

It would be easier if the Lightning won because then in 5 years you all won’t have to say “boy I hope Team X wins so Hedman/Palat/Point/whoever can finally get a cup.”

Let’s just get them all a cup right now.

He wasn't their best player (altho neither is Stamkos) but the Avs won in 2001 with Forsberg missing the last 2 rounds

Wow Dallas is in a cup final. I sort of remember the last time that happened. Mike Modano, Derian Hatcher, Nieuwendijk and Eddie the Eagle. Fun team and a great period of hockey with Jagr still with the Penguins and Theo Fleury tearing it up.
I am slightly rooting for Tampa who I feel is one of the best organisations in the NHL and for Stamkos to play. But I wish both teams success and have no ill wishes towards either.
Hedman or Chudobin for MVP?

Goaltenders never get the Smythe so unless he wins with 2+ shutouts in the series it'll be Heiskanen.

it'll be either Hedman, Point, or Heiskanen. last time a goalie won the Conn Smythe was back in 2012 and Jon Quick.

Goalies have won 16 of 54 Conn Smythes, so a shade under 30% of the time. Wingers have won 11, defensemen have won 10, centres have won 17.

Ovi got the Conn Smyth for his career more than his performance in the playoffs back in 2018. Kuzy was arguably better.

I mean marginally maybe but Ovie still had 15 goals and was over a ppg. That was hardly some "let's just give it to the guy people know" like Crosby when he had 19pts in 2016.

Crosby was the correct choice in 2016. And in any event it's hard to care if they went with the #2 choice if the #1 choice is not some obvious landslide winner.
