As he did on the first Borat, the follow-up film Brüno, and his Showtime summer series Who Is America, Baron Cohen risked his life multiple times to shoot the scenes in this film. Indeed, I’m told by sources that he had to wear a bulletproof vest on two different shooting days and on many days, there were risky and dangerous scenarios in shooting.

Hmmm yes.

In the clips, I'm pretty sure the moderator mentions them first, not Trump, although he certainly reacted like he recognized the name. The weird part about him denying he knows who they are this afternoon is that he's had all last night and morning to look up the group to whom he issued a standby order, which became the biggest story of the debate. He's obviously lying about not knowing who they are, but the excuse they went with is that the bigly president with his even biglier brain and his whole team of the best people haven't been able to figure out the mystery of the proud boys yet in the last 16 hours.

oh no it's :effort: time, please bear with me:

I won't pretend to know the full story here, but I've seen this unfold a little bit in my family. I have racist boomer parents. It's pretty common where I live in suburban FL. They're an older school of racists who don't openly march with hoods, but also aren't afraid to share their tier list of races to anyone who will listen, at least in the privacy of their own home -- not so much in public anymore as when I was a kid. My brother never really escaped this mindset, but I think it became clear to millennials and maybe some younger gen-X that they just can't get away with that anymore in most public spaces. You can't just say the N word at your office job or in the classroom anymore. In the 90s when I was in middle and high school, I remember hearing slurs all the time. Contrast that with now -- I work at an office in the same area where I grew up with a lot of 50+ year old suburban chuds who listen to conservative talk radio half the day, and I've never heard one of them drop a classic™ racial slur.

They've derived a new form of hate that isn't explicitly based on "brown, therefore bad". They won't condemn a whole race. Instead they've turned to dogwhistles about "culture" and couch it in mostly nationalistic terms. Two years ago at Christmas my brother, for example, got drunk and went on a long rant about how he's a "western chauvinist" or some weird term like that. His message was that white western capitalist culture is the best there is, and we owe all of the great accomplishments of the last millennia to Europe and its colonies that adopted "european culture". And based on that premise, he believes that the rest of the world must adopt the same culture because it's the only way forward, but it's especially important to defend it and promote it in the US. He said he has no problem with any race as long as they basically white-wash themselves and fall in line as good capitalist workers, and if they do they will achieve economic and social equality with good old fashioned bootstraps and elbow grease. And anyone who doesn't want to do that must be forced to for the greater good.

So basically, it's the most naive and narrow world view combined with a complete lack of empathy and perspective about others (probably due to a privileged life that's never faced any hardship from the power structures of society) with a dash of white-man's-burden and "hate the sin not the sinner" horseshit, plus a weird outlook that there is some end-game that the human race is working toward which we need to maximize our economic output to achieve at any cost. And if that means gay people need to stay in the closet because only atomic families with a mom and a dad can raise a good worker (and yes, my family tells me they don't hate gay people, yet they still preach this), so be it. As far as I know, this is essentially in line with the proud boy beliefs, along with the no-touch-wiener stuff -- which I think my brother also believes, but he hasn't said it directly, just vague hints here and there and I really don't want to ask.

That's just one anecdote, and I can't tell you whether those beliefs are held in bad faith because they know they can't get away with out-right white nationalism and nazi flags anymore so they stick to crypto-racism instead -- or if they truly did decide that racial discrimination is wrong and indefensible, but still can't escape the feeling of superiority they were programmed with from birth, so they decided "well if it's not because of my race, it must be because of our great culture and my great upbringing" or something along those lines. And that feeling of superiority is obviously attractive to more than just white people, so they are able to recruit non-white and LGBT people who want in to the, uh, "master-not-race"? club.

I know Trump supporters at work, and they bristle with rage anytime they hear something about all Trumpers being racist. I believe to them that racism is simply a matter of not letting the N word escape like it's some kind of magic smoke. If you hold in the N word, then your'e not racist. So only the farthest right fringe groups like the ones at the unite the right rally are racists and white supremacists, and your average chud to them is not racist by their strict definition. It doesn't matter if you can see right through the veil of culture and nationalism they maintain that by pure coincidence leads to policies and attitudes the preserve the blatant racial economic and social divisions, because they have plausible deniability.

Sorry to bring this into a thread that's supposed to be LOLs about the president's poopy diapers, I'll try to do better.

Sorry to bring this into a thread that's supposed to be LOLs about the president's poopy diapers, I'll try to do better.

You're seeing a resurgence of a really old form of hate, it may occasionally don a new name but praising the "Superiority" of their own culture has been a thing for at least several thousand years but almost definitely existed in prehistory. This sentiment was common in the Roman Empire, and you can find more than a few popular books published in the 1980s and 1990s extolling the virtues of white society based on cherry-picked examples.

You're 100% right about their perception of racism. This quote from Lee Atwater on the southern strategy is as important now as it was then:

quote:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “friend of the family, friend of the family, friend of the family.” By 1968 you can’t say “friend of the family”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “friend of the family, friend of the family.”

Dogwhistles let racists like Trump play both sides: they can appeal to people who don't perceive themselves as racist and overt racists alike. The "not a racist" racists don't hear the hidden message, the "real" racists do. You see this all over GOP policy. Social security is good, "entitlement" payments and welfare queens are bad. Mitt Romney's healthcare plan was fine when it was going to benefit white Bostonites, but call the same plan Obamacare and it's a travesty. Gun-toting militias are fine when it's a bunch of white men, but place a single member of the Black Panthers buying groceries within 10 miles of a polling place and you'll be hearing about it for years. Reagan passed California's first gun control bill after black people exercised their second amendment rights by holding firearms on the steps of the state capitol. Everything they do is racist, but their supporters get to feel not-racist because they're not publicly using the N-word.

Cable news realised trump insanity was a ratings hit and gifted him millions of dollars worth of free air time, and also had a vested interest in presenting 2016 as a neck and neck horse race. Hillary hosed up by ignoring Bill's insistence on campaigning in swing states and also never really escaped from the perception that she was the candidate because "it's her turn".

Fallon is a dummy but late night talk shows haven't been a significant cultural factor since Jon Stewart retired imo
