Elviscat posted:The poster that advocated murdering healthcare workers as a means of civil disobedience? so, sidebar, but this bullshit is probably one of the biggest problems the left has: we've completely failed to figure out a solution to the Michio Kaku problem. if you're not familiar, Michio Kaku is a genius theoretical physicist who's one of the chief minds behind quantum mechanics existing, as a discipline. in his field, he is loving unimpeachable and you'd be an idiot to even try. however, Michio Kaku also likes to show up on Discovery Channel and History Channel programs that have nothing to do with theoretical physics and babble on about dinosaurs being part UFO or whatever the gently caress, so he can make beer money. the world has, by and large, resolved this by listening to Michio Kaku whenever he's talking about subatomic particles or quantum theory, and quietly ignoring him whenever he talks about things that aren't that. nobody's moving to have his name stripped from his theoretical physics papers because he went on Ancient Aliens and babbled about how UFOs totally built Stonehenge. the takeaway, generalized, is this: it is possible to have bad, dumb or uninformed opinions on some things, while still having good opinions or genuine insight on other unrelated things. for example, Prester Jane may or may not believe that you should murder EMTs as a means of civil disobedience. (i have never personally seen her say this, but it's being alleged, so i'll take it at face value for the purposes of this discussion.) if she does believe that, that's an insanely loving bad opinion and should probably be called out as such. however, it also has precisely jack and poo poo to do with her theories on how right-wing groups organize and operate, to the point where bringing it up in the latter context is almost a complete non-sequitur; using it as a reason to discount those theories doesn't make any sense.

Having watched both debates its really made it clear that we are all living a shared delusion that politicians are anything other than demented and vile. How could anyone look at the participants of either debate, and come away with the impression of anything other than madness and corruption.

So the "every famous person ever is trans" conspiracy is utterly bizarre but what I'm stuck on at this particular moment is the fact that these people seem to think that trans people only ever date other trans people who are the opposite gender from themselves. And I know this is because they're conflating gender identity and sexual orientation, but the end result is a heterosexual relationship, just in a way that they've decided is "wrong." So not only is there a global conspiracy where all famous people ever are trans, the global conspiracy is also running a dating service. Also these doofuses are apparently unaware of the well established fact that fat men can have tits.

Mak0rz posted:Who is Prester Jane? She grew up in a cult and was involved in a lot of weird poo poo as an adult that lead to a theory about how authoritarian groups operate. It was applied to the far right since it came out of D&D and was originally a way of explaining why the Republican party keeps getting more and more extreme, but you can see it play out in fandom circles too and she was working on trying to articulate that aspect at one point. She quit posting last summer because of frustration that had been building for years and the current political environment of the US is triggering in general. She still pops up on twitter. Also, she never advocated killing healthcare workers, or bombing PPE factories, she was advocating a general strike, which she's been doing for a long time, and suggested the PPE factories do something akin to when NHS doctors and nurses strike to draw attention to how poorly its getting distributed or something like that.
