The issue is that it's not enough for certain fans to find certain characters attractive, but that Snape or Draco or Loki must also be martyred. They must be made noble, redeemed. There's several reasons for this, but the basic gist is that when you're used to getting what you want from your media, there's no need to have to rewrite the story to yourself so that you'll like it more. Sometimes this leads to really interesting, unique, or just outright fun interpretations of media. Other times though, this means sugarcoating or just outright ignoring all the faults of a brooding male villain while exaggerating his virtues or just outright making them up. And hell, even that itself might be fine -- it's all fiction, it's all fake, who cares, do what you want! -- except that it also has to be said that all this adulation is almost always focused on the whitest and straightest male characters, and often done at the expense of characters of color, or others who were canonically persecuted -- a lot -- by these white male characters. As the Snapewives article mentions, this is the part where Lily and Hermione actually deserved to be called the N-word, you see. This is the part where actually Finn from Star Wars is actually homophobic for hating Kylo Ren because Kylo is actually coded as queer and femme, actually. It ain't just men who sent John Boyega all those hateful messages. So I'm iffy with this image of...hell, I don't even know what to call this. Women who love fictional creeps? Incel-loving women? Whatever they are, I take issue with them being categorized as harmless innocent fangirls being ostracized by the big bad patriarchy. Yeah, I think that's pretty accurate. I have a terrible taste for fictional characters but I never pretend they're not complete assholes or try to defend them. But there's this type of character like a bad boy with a heart of gold, which is quite popular among many women I think. So if they like this type they might try to take a regular piece of poo poo and justify his actions somehow. And hey, Rowling wrote it so that every awful thing that Snape's ever done is justified by the end because he was in luv and one of the central themes of HP is that love is awesome and good and right and bad guys just don't love, so if someone loves, they can't be a baddy. If she believes that Snape was all right in the end, then why wouldn't HP fans believe the same thing?

This makes me think of a character in FFXIV. Stormblood spoilers: There's a woman named Yotsuyu. She's very much the character where she comes on screen and twitch chat yells STEP ON ME, and she does actually indeed step on one of the characters' heads in one scene. She's full blown villain, she does have a pretty sad backstory but that doesn't really excuse the bad stuff she did. There's a point in the story where she gets amnesia and forgets everything about who she is and becomes this kind reserved almost childlike character. I was so worried that they were gonna try and redeem her and either keep her like that forever or when she gets her memory back she realizes what a poo poo she's been and changes her ways. In the end, she gets her memories back and goes right back to being the bad guy, and I was so relieved. She's a perfect example I think, she's the hot female villain that I think most people wanted to not change. On the other side you have a character like Akechi from Persona 5 and I am just utterly baffled at people that not only want him to get redeemed but there's so much fanart of him like being real friends with the group or hooking up with the main character and I'm like, this character is a very bad guy. I totally understand if you find this bad boy hot but I do not understand wanting him to suddenly be redeemed. Vegeta is the one exception here he is a good boy who did nothing wrong
