Here's a good thread showing off some of the Pixel 5's (and 4a 5G's) new camera stuff.

People are finding ways around the NDA it seems, it's kind of clever.

I will have you all know that Dr Fauxton sent a bug report to google a while back about the lack of a repeat button while casting in youtube music. It's been escalated twice now and a third specialist has joined the case. Were not really sure when they'll resolve the issue and add the feature for her but honestly they don't seem to know either.

Ah the crapshoot that is Google support...

Hopefully you'll get a response soon. But they probably don't know what to do so they'll just mark it as working as intended.

She'd prefer that over

Because it was initially intended as a feature request and they've been treating it like a mystery glitch for like 2 weeks now

Yeah, they'll usually just keep doing that over and over.

You might have to hop on Reddit and see if there's a support guy there. dmziggy is support for Google Fi, for example.

I realize this is a broad/vague question but has anyone been burned with buying used android phones? Burned in the sense of malware/viruses/loggers etc...

Best Buy has an Open Box deal on the Pixel 4a for $307 that is tempting.

*For some reason I thought that 4a was $399 new. Looking at it now, saving $43 might not be worth the cost of buying used.

Factory resetting a phone gets rid of all but the most persistent malware to the point that I wouldn't worry about it much.

That said, I wouldn't take $43 as a fair trade for potential warranty issues that can crop up when buying used.

No idea! But there probably is and they're just not saying that they are. :v:

The best I can do is a close friend of mine who works for Google on their Boulder campus with the Drive team.

He hates what they're doing to the Pixel this year. Mostly the naming stuff as it's very confusing for the normal layperson with the whole "4, 4 XL, 4a, 4a 5G, 5" all being sold at pretty much the same time (except Google's not selling the 4 line anymore). With 4a 5G being LARGER than the 5 which is the actual "flagship" and basically is the same as the 5 but has no water resistance or wireless charging so it's somehow lesser...but also bigger? Google barely gave any time to the 5 during the 30 min unveiling and he thinks maybe Google might just drop the flagship line entirely.

Bigger ≠ better, "a" denotes the budget options. Done, no more confusion.

For Samsung's line, I wonder what the data is on whether hitting every price point is good or not. For example, I could see the FE killing sales of the 20 and 20+, not because people wouldn't be willing to pay more for a Samsung flagship, but because they don't have to. And that keeps on going down the line... Why spend $700 on the FE when $500 gets me a really similar A line phone (assuming it does, I have no idea lol)? Similarly, I'd buy a Pixel 5 for sure if the 4a didn't exist. Budget/mid range options are too good now!

At the same time, you have been able to find the S20 for less than the S20 FE because it's been out for 6 months. So you get this odd situation where you can pay less for the top flagship, but it's also the "older" device too which isn't as exciting to some people. In Samsung's case, I think it's about staying fresh in people's minds and the headlines to try to capitalize on consumers that sent paying attention.

You have an S10e owner in early 2020 going "nope not going to pay to replace this year old phone for $1000" and that person is out of the market. Then you release a $700 phone 6 months later. Now that person's S10e is 18 months old, they've been seeing new devices talked about all year, and they feel like a savvy consumer because they waited and now they can get something 95% as good as the thing they said no to earlier in the year at 65% of the price.

Meanwhile, if that person were go to on Amazon or eBay they would see that S20 is the same price that the S20 FE is being offered for, but they won't because that's not the phone they are in the market for now.

I know COVID has messed with the world a lot but I wouldn't put it past Google to have this all planned before the age of COVID.

Qualcomm also has something to answer for, with their more expensive SoCs with non-integrated modems and higher prices. The sooner Google uses its own SoC the better.

I'd love a Pixel with the flagship SoC and an integrated modem etc., but I think they'll avoid the premium market forever now.

Yeah, but then discounts and promos come in and everything gets thrown out the window, and your brand-new S20 FE with a 2-year old phone trade in is $400 straight from Samsung while the older S20 is $675.

Phone markets are weird.

I would be very interested in reading a lengthy article digging deep into what the economics of the phone trade in world looks like. For example you could go to Costco and trade in a Samsung S7 and get a $430 rebate back on a S20 FE this last week in the US, making it $199 essentially (Costco sells the phone at $629 instead of $699), and I have a very difficult time imagining any world in which that makes sense for everyone involved.

Yeah, Google planned the Pixel 5 since February so they always planned for it to be this way.

It's just the pandemic hosed up supply because the Pixel 4a should have been out earlier.

Aren't phones usually designed 12 to 18 months in advance though?

And if it was in February, then that would've been pretty much been in peak covid-19 season in China and other Asian countries where smartphones are manufactured.

It's sold out in most of the countries it's being sold in and the Sage one went first. It was sold out on the US Google Store for Verizon and Google Fi for a few hours too.

I'd say, despite the bitching that it's "not good" because it's not the latest and greatest SoC, it's selling pretty well. Maybe not as well as the Pixel a line but well enough?

According to Nikkei, Google only has 800,000 to sell in 2020 and are prioritizing the Pixel 4a 5G. Considering they spent the most time at the presentation on the "lesser" phone, I'd say it's entirely possible that the Pixel 5 will be the last non-Pixel a device and it'll just be the mid-range line from here on out.

Anyone else have camera lag on Pixel 3? Opening the camera, and switching from camera to video, both take a few seconds. It wasn't like this when I bought the phone, wondering if a factory reset would help.

Just tried it. Opening the app takes about 1 second, switching to video takes about 3 seconds. I reset mine to factory settings after Android 11 dropped (I always do this after a major release) though. What sort of times are you seeing?

Here is a list of the 128 unpatched security vulnerabilities Android 4.4 has, which depending on the vulnerability may be exploited by apps, emails, websites, downloads and text messages.

To clarify: Android that old and unpatched could basically be pwned by you receiving a text message with an image.

Running a 7 year old unpatched OS just isn't advisable for anyone no matter their threat model or risk tolerance anymore.

Hey, I have a silly question. My Pixel 5 gets here next week and I am looking at making the jump to wireless earphones. The problem is I can't wear the in ear bud type of earphones and have wasted wayyy too much money trying to find a pair that won't cause me pain after a few minutes.

However, the apple pod design works perfectly for me. Is there a set of pod type earphones that will give me full google assistant functionality?

Are you open to over-ear headphones? There are great wireless headphones that can give you great results - I'm the same as you, went through several pairs of buds trying to find something good but they always either pop out or get extremely uncomfortable after 30 minutes. I moved to headphones and haven't looked back. I'll occasionally use earbuds still if I think I'm going to be sweating but only for very short intervals.

Have you tried something like the Backbeat fits? They have a piece that goes into your ear a little bit, but they don't seal like earbuds do. I use them for exercising (and everything else, really) and love them.
