There's some clips too, if you've not seen. They are also terrible.

Who is this for?

If you didn't want to be beholden to the Discworld, which is very well-known and beloved, why base it (LOOSELY) on the books at all?

If you DID want Discworld fans to watch, why would you completely gently caress up these beloved characters?

All these years of development hell to come up with this? Oy.

Remember the story of the Mort adaption, where they wanted to get rid "of the death angle" to make it more marketable? This is the same, Discworld by the way of focus groups and marketing.

So, it's quality as an adaptation of a specific work aside... it's not very funny. There are jokes there, but the timing on them is terrible and manically mugging at the camera isn't actually funny on its own.

I just realized what Vimes's antics remind me of: Legion, where (what I assume to be the) main character just makes faces all the time instead of, you know, acting. Well, at least in the trailers and advertisements, I've never watched the show because of what was in the trailers and advertisements.

e: Still time to recast Jim Carrey as Vimes, and Vetinari.

I would unironically watch any adaptation of Discworld in which Jim Carrey played every character.

all the acting in those clips is just absolutely terrible, with the possible exception of Angua and Death (Wendell Pierce is awesome although both the appearance and dialogue are incredibly un-Deathy)

everyone's jumping on Vimes as cut-price Jack Sparrow, and for good reason, but Cheery in particular comes across like someone's given Noel Fielding a heavy dose of horse tranquilisers

Discworld fans are nowhere near how big a demographic as you think.

Honestly I'm not upset. It doesn't look that bad. I get exactly why it bugs people and conflating cops with punks is some seriously tone-deaf theater kid poo poo... but being honest fighting against the show for reasons of orthodoxy or cheap production is only gonna hurt the legitimate criticisms.

I take back what I said before, I don't know how I could even hate watch this when I couldn't make it all the way through a single one of those clips, that acting was something else. I guess Angua seemed decent and I don't mind the deadpan Cheery, but that Vimes is unbearable.

Unfortunately the adaptations came 30 years too late to cast the two men who should have been Vimes - Pete Postlethwaite and Paul Darrow. I saw Darrow play Vimes in the stage adaptation of Guards! Guards! and he was perfect.

The stage production with Darrow was a lot of fun, but it was basically panto. Darrow was having way too much fun, so his Vimes came across more like Lovejoy.

Actually, I really liked the look of Vimes in the still photos that came out a while ago, he was one of the ones I thought they'd gotten right. I would have never expected him to act like the crazy Jack Sparrow we saw in the trailer, if he'd just been a drunken gruff, blunt sergeant-type (with maybe a little less eyeliner) he might have been perfect. As is, he's the absolute worst thing they've shown.

Argh, this is a perfect example of why I hate this so much. That's the Klatchian Coffee scene from Men at Arms! Except they've completely loving ruined it.

Why would you cast Darrow as Vimes when you could cast him as Ventenari and just get him to play "Avon but with Serevelan's job"

It is just tantalizing enough, with all these quick little Discworld references (Gaspode! Sybil's hair fell off!), that I'm all the more frustrated with the setting and casting choices (Why is Sybil a young woman?). I also liked Vimes a lot more in the casting photos, in action he seems... I dunno, seedier? Grimier than I always pictured him?

I will give it a couple episodes to see how it feels when it's all put together, but I'm not terribly hopeful.
