If you think Orlando is bad about sprawl, come to Colorado Springs. We have, like, 3 city center areas.

I'm a 90 minute walk from downtown. The bus would be 30 minutes if I feel like waiting an hour for it to show up and require at least one change. There's barely half a million people in this city.

I mean I don't give a poo poo about whether the rail is high speed, it doesn't need to go 120mph, it just needs to be regular, on time, and be within reasonable walking distance. You can solve the reasonable walking distance issue with bus service that actually loving works as opposed to being a half hour to hour late every time.

Every time I've checked on regular-rear end slow rail because I thought it'd be fun it just looked like sitting in an airplane for 3 solid days with 50 stops. And even more expensive

I'd definitely take something comfortable and direct even if it isn't all that fast

Also plan on sitting in sidings while priority freight uses the tracks.

Yeah, that's the thing with rail travel. Across this country, it's worse than air travel both on a price and time basis.

Now, the government could offset that by 1) just taking the hit on Amtrak because it's viewed as a public good to have an affordable, reliable cross-country alternative to air travel and 2) by investing in high speed rail owned by the US government. #2 would both improve transit times (via higher speeds) and delays (mostly due to Amtrak leasing/buying time on freight rails where freight takes priority if there's a conflict).

Now between desirable metros, intercity rail can make sense without government subsidies (see the northeast corridor and the California coast. Side note: everyone wants to link Chicago to St. Louis but there's fuckall in St. Louis and I've never understood it) but the distance between most of our metro areas makes it really, really hard.

Up and down the east coast works like this at least. I do Boston or now RI to DC a good bit. It's several hours but way more comfortable than airline seats and I can bring on booze and drink the whole way.

Ask me about passing on a $100 upgrade cost to leave early from Union Station then making the brilliant decision to run up a $140 bar tab instead.

Yeah Amtrak is so much better than air travel that adding even an entire day to your travel is worth it.

I also just really, really hate the airport and would rather drive than fly.

Isn’t there an east-west train that goes from somewhere in the northeast out to the west (Colorado is a stop I think).

Yeah, there's a Chicago-San Francisco train. Took it thirty years ago and had a blast, although I was an eight year old boy on a train so of course I had a blast.

Density is very specifically mentioned.

quote:

Population: 8.5m vs 8.8m
Landmass: 42k square miles vs 32k square miles

If you're referring to more local density, that's a chicken and egg problem, dense suburbs do not just happen without infrastructure to support them.

There's three main routes across the US, north, central, south. I took NY to Chicago to Martinez to get home when I got off a ship, it was good if you can spend three days with nothing much to do. I think I read Shogun and some other stuff.

Wanted to take the Canadian one but I couldn't make it work.

Yeah, people in the NE Corridor love Amtrak because Amtrak has passenger-specific rail segments. Anywhere else in the network, you spend a not-insignificant amount of time sitting (or laying, if you pay enough) still.

The other block to nationwide high speed rail is land ownership. A nationwide network would look like we let Jeffy from Family Circus draw the routes to avoid all of the Big Agro-owned farm tracts and natural gas fields.

Also, I'm guessing most municipalities, counties, and states have about a half-century of pent up ill-will regarding bad faith negotiations with the rail companies regarding access and right-of-way that are on Hatfield and McCoy type level.

They are a pain in the rear end to deal with.

It got canned, it went way over budget and they are only finishing one segment, Bakersfield to Merced. Yay. That project was doomed since it couldn't get into LA proper either via The Cajon Pass near victorville by swinging west around the San Gabriel mountains, or through them at the south of the Valley in towards Santa Clarita. Same thing about it not going all the way to Oakland/SF either.

They should have done a segment between LA and San Diego first as a test case IMO, and maybe used some of the money to fully complete BART as it was intended, to be a ring around the entire Bay Area. Ah well. They'll get it right one generation.

That being said apparently the Las Vegas to Mojave High speed rail project got funded, at least as far as LA to Victorville, the "cheap" part.

I love that Amtrak lets you bring booze onboard and there's always at least one person who doesn't know and is either amazed at this new found knowledge or weirded out.

I bought a six pack of Narragansett tall boys when I was going back to RI to visit family from DC a few years ago and proceeded to slowly drink them one at a time while I read my book the entire trip. Pretty sure some of the people in business class didn't care for it but

Nothing is stopping you from bringing alcohol onto a plane either, it just has to be lass than 3.5oz per container. Which basically just leaves the single serving liquor bottles.

Also some people seem to be surprised that you can bring your own food into an airport/onto an airplane.

It’s actually illegal to consume alcohol other than that served by the airline. You can bring it through but not consume it on the plane. Technically. It’ll probably only matter if you get so drunk they try and cut you off and then you keep drinking and they divert or have cops escort you off the plane.
