Unrelated, HBO/HBOMax is releasing a documentary on Craig Carton tomorrow

quote:

All of Carton’s WFAN colleagues — Esiason, executive producer Al Dukes, sports anchor Jerry Recco, board operator Eddie Scozzare — and program director Mark Chernoff share their experiences, which help define Carton for viewers beyond radio loudmouth or degenerate gambler. Of course, none of them realized how bad Carton’s gambling problem was until he didn’t show up for work on Sept. 6, 2017 because he’d been arrested by the FBI.

The developments leading up to that arrest and the apparent end of Carton’s radio career are what makes Wild Card fascinating to watch. What began as an interest in blackjack turned into a money-making machine for Carton. He was so good at it that he could’ve made a living that way, as investors gave him money to play with for returns.

But like any addict, the continual feeding of the habit became more important than whatever ill-advised decisions and financial consequences that followed. As the documentary explains, Carton would go to casinos at midnight and play until he had to be on the air, his wins or losses having no effect on his performance. So why would anyone suspect something was wrong?

Awful Announcing posted:

Once again, Keith Olbermann is gone from ESPN, but he’s not napalming any bridges this time. Olbermann has worked at ESPN on and off since 1989, joining the network full-time in 1992 and working there until 1997 before leaving for MSNBC, then spending time at Fox Sports Net. He wound up back with ABC Radio (in 2001) and ESPN Radio (in 2005), but was mostly working for MSNBC during that time, and continued his news and politics duties there even after adding a Football Night In America role with NBC in 2007.

Following sports stints with NBC and TBS, Olbermann returned to ESPN in 2013 for his own show (which featured the regular “Worst Person In The World” segment he started with MSNBC in 2003; a 2014 one on Mike Francesa is pictured above) but left in 2015. He then returned again in 2018, (after finishing a 2016-17 political commentary run with GQ’s YouTube channel) and even co-hosted a reunion SportsCenter with Dan Patrick last year. Now, he’s heading out again, as he relayed on Twitter Tuesday:

4th departure if you count the ESPN Radio gig.

He's doing a political commentary series on youtube

John Canzano of the Oregonian has a fantastic retrospective on the absolute disaster that the Pac-12 network has been. A couple excerpts:

quote:

Because [at the 2018 conference championship] Scott had 170 employees on the payroll of the Pac-12 Network. He’s since laid off or furloughed the vast majority of them. If the Pac-12 is still a media company, it’s a hollow shell of an operation. One that isn’t currently scheduled to carry any of the conference football games this season.

The first six weeks of the season will be televised by a combination of ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox and FS1. Fox will televise the Dec. 18 title game.

quote:

We ought to back up right about here for context. Because when the Pac-12 launched the network leadership really didn’t know what it was doing. That’s become evident as I’ve talked with people involved in the launch.

One high-ranking conference official told me: "No media company wanted to partner with the Pac-12. ESPN declined. FOX, CBS, even the Discovery Channel declined. Nobody knows this.

“We weren’t wanted.”

Kenny Albert is really on temporary loan from Fox during the playoffs.

Probably Kenny. In the previous years, it always seemed like Kenny was their second option, as he'd usually call the other set of games in the Conference Finals (Like, if Doc's crew was doing the Eastern Conference Finals, Kenny would do the Western). He's been doing NHL games since it was on Fox in the 90's, and with NBC since they got it 15~ years ago, but I wonder if he has a preference between being the lead NHL guy or part of Fox's second tier of NFL guys. He's likely the favorite to get the job and likely gets it if he wants it.

Someone in the NHL thread suggested that John Forslund or Gord Miller might also be in consideration. IIRC, Forslund's been getting a bit more playoff games over the years and might be an outside shot, while Miller works for TSN in Canada and is I think an even longer shot. RIP David Strader.

He’s not retired, he’s been calling the Orioles. He’s also in his 70’s and only like a year or two younger than Doc.

This doesn’t mean I wouldn’t kill for one last hurrah of Thorne and Clement.

John Forslund would be my pick and guess. Since he didn't get re-upped by Carolina (his home team), he basically was only working for NBC during the playoffs. He should have done all of the Finals games instead of Doc, considering the delay that was on every game Doc did. But, looking back, Doc probably told NBC "this is my last finals, just let me do it."

Gary's 72 years old and hasn't called the NHL in like 15 years. i think he subbed in for a couple games on some team's homer broadcast (LA maybe?) when the main guy was sick, but that ship has long sailed.

He's on the Orioles TV call these days and seems to be enjoying it.
