I do love whoever runs the MERL twitter account because they quite consistently have good shitposts. I liked the one where they tweeted an escalation of rectangular cows.

I'm actually curious how they vote on the ISS. Like, do they get postal ballots in the resupply ship and then send them back down again? Where are they registered to vote? Space?

Great question about how, I'd like to know too. As for registration it's probably like mail voting for deployed troops, they have a Home of Record which is their address for official stuff like voting and where to send your stuff if you die. https://twitter.com/humansnocontext/status/1319338828092657668

OwlFancier posted:I'm actually curious how they vote on the ISS. same as any other absentee ballot for a citizen on a long assignment overseas. astronauts can be registered anywhere but most of them are registered in harris county texas, because that's where mission control and the astronaut training facility is, so that's where astronauts tend to move their families to until they retire or are reassigned away from active space duty. for texas residents, the harris county clerk basically just emails a ballot to the astronaut aboard the ISS via the houston space center. but if an astronaut wanted to maintain like iowa citizenship and keep an iowa home address then it would be up to the wherever county iowa county board of elections to figure out how to get a ballot to that person in space

If astronauts can securely vote through email then why can't I?

Voting by email is an even worse idea than electronic voting machines. As humans we are incredibly terrible at securing computer systems. It would only be a matter of time until someone broke in and changed the all-electronic vote counts with basically 0 traces or evidence.

The only form of government that will ever work is full on cybernetic assimilation to become unified as a species. Personally I think that would be cool as hell and we had that thought of my own accord with no influence from the network

Surprisingly interesting content, honestly. I didn't know anything about wagons before this and now I can tell a box wagon from a bow wagon. They also have a wagon from fuckin like 1780 or some poo poo, that's an old-rear end fuckin wagon.

There’s a video on YouTube of a guy and his company or his friends making a giant wagon wheel for a specific kind of wagon. I think the wagon is in a museum or something. The wheel is nuts. It’s got something crazy like a twenty-foot diameter, and they’re using period-appropriate techniques to build the thing. After using mallets to drive in the enormous wooden spokes, they heat a piece of iron and wrap it around the wagon wheel and let it cool and shrink down to hold everything in place.

It's a joke in classical Arabic studies that every word carries its meaning, the opposite of its meaning, and a meaning related to camel husbandry, depending on context, so that's actually not too unlikely.
