Let me explain this to you since you must not know anyone like this. It's basically failure to launch. Some people never leave a school mentality. It's all they want to do, it's the only thing they are comfortable with. Many of these people end up in academia in some capacity or another. This particular case it worse, as he ends up as "an educator" but not the kind that scratches his itch or provides for free educational opportunities so he keeps piling on debt to go to his comfortable place.

Someone like this, at that age and frankly even two decades younger, will never become an "outside of academia" adult. And there will always be another school willing to take money from another lender will will loan it to the poor sod.

I knew a guy, while I was in college, who was in his... 9th? year of school. He was working on a 2nd master's degree I think?

His actual plan was, "if I just stay in academia for the rest of my life, I'll never have to pay off the loans"

Why? You have a professional career.

Continuing ed/pursuing specialties is a world of difference from pickup up random degrees that you probably never intend to use.

Is this technically wrong? Could he bounce between degrees and research assistant positions until Social Security eligibility time, staying on income based repayment until death? He would never make much, but might not be outright destitute if there are no children involved.

SS depends on what you pay into it (because otherwise THAT'S SOCIALISM!!!!). If his highest years of pay were as an assistant researcher he's basically getting no SS.

The anonymity is for plausible deniability. I'm guessing dude wants to "prove himself" / creep her out by showing he has access to her bank account info or some other personal information, but knows that's technically unwanted contact (and perhaps has been told not to contact her before...)

My husband lost $100k+ of our money (self.relationship_advice)

quote:

He panicked at the COVID crash and sold everything at rock bottom. I tried to explain why it was a bad financial decision, but he yelled that he should have a say and just went and did it. Unbeknownst to me, he dumped everything including the kids’ college funds. Now the market has somewhat recovered, but everything we have is sitting in cash (over $100k less than what it would be if we stayed) with no plan of what to do next except for wait for another crash. I know we are lucky to have even saved enough to lose that much. I grew up extremely poor and money means security to me. I just can’t get over what he did and I can’t stop stressing over it. He gets annoyed every time I bring it up and tells me what’s done is done and I just need to get over it. How do I move forward?

It's more R/relationships post, but I guess the BWM side is she's looking at it like a problem gambler saying they "lost" $100k+ because they value went back up after he sold off when there was no way either of them could have known that 100%.

If they were doing well enough that the value of those holdings went up $100k in the last 6 months, then I'll bet they still came out reporting capital gains and not losses.
