I don't think it's streaming on any of the major services right now, but this Ben Mendelsohn talk reminded me of a lesser-known movie starring him and Ryan Reynolds called MIssissippi Grind, it's nothing too amazing but they have great chemistry together and it really nails the (to me at least) depressing feel of non-Vegas casinos and the gambling addicts they attract. Just a fun buddy/road trip film, any scene of them getting wasted together is great.

As a big fan of the book (Haunting of Hill House) and of the Robert Wise adaptation, 1999 remake is of one my biggest movie disappointments. They ruined what truly made Hill House so good by explaining too much. At least with the Netflix series they were smart enough to just use the book as an inspiration.

The series is a remix of the 1963 movie + some book, if anything. Many shots are remakes of 1963.

I'm not sure, but I watched her in the 2020 adaptation of Emma, and I couldn't stop comparing her and all the other characters to Clueless. This new adaptation of Emma, the lead character is so much harsher than Cher in Clueless.

She does kind of look like Christina Ricci now that you mention it. Her and maybe some kind of exotic cat?

The show's great by the way. Pretty much everyone is talking about how great Anya Taylor-Joy is, and rightfully so, but Marielle Heller really killed it in her role. She might actually be my favorite now that I've had more time to think on it. At first I thought she'd just be yet another suburban housewife with a drinking problem, but Heller's performance really gives her a lot of depth. I definitely wasn't expecting to like her character as much as I did.

I had difficulties placing her as well until I found out she was the main character of Split and voiced one of the main characters in The Dark Crystal series. Hopefully (almost definitely) she will turn up in more quality-stuff from here.

Yeah, Anya Taylor-Joy is great in Emma. She's also going to be Furiosa in George Miller's upcoming Fury Road prequel. I haven't seen New Mutants, but looks like its digital release is in a couple weeks. Movie is prolly trash, but she looks great as Magik.

New Mutants is actually really good trashy fun and surprisingly faithful to the darker tone the comic had in its first 30 or so issues

I'm legit looking forward to it. I just didn't want to brave the COVID deathboxes to go out and see it. Disney should've just thrown it on Hulu same day it came out in theaters. I'm sure way more people would have watched it then. Or poo poo, maybe they could have pushed it on Hulu during this past Halloween weekend. Stupid rear end Disney.

Something awesome at 16 has a high chance of being horrifying at 40. I remember my friends would race each other, using each other each other as snow sleds, and it's amazing no one got injured doing so. Still funny as hell looking back.

I picked up a month of HBO Max, so I've been binging a lot of movies recently. (I like dumb action movies, so don't judge some of my choices here!) Some mini-reviews:

Kiki's Delivery Service: I've seen this one before, and it's still great. It's a little bit wistful/melancholy, but taps into an interesting sensation of growing up. When Kiki stops being able to talk to her cat, I think it was a pretty powerful detail related to her not being a child anymore and growing into her own person. Of course, other people may have a different interpretation of that. Like I said, the movie is a little wistful, but great.

Jonah Hex: Pretty forgettable. To be fair, I wasn't paying much attention. It reminded me of a less-fun version of Wild Wild West (which is a slightly better movie than its reputation).

Steel: I've heard about this movie for a long time, so I was interested in finally taking a look. Shaq isn't a great actor, but I wasn't expecting him to be. He basically does as well as I expected. Many other aspects of the movie are also pretty amateurish, though, which actually surprised me a little. For comparison, Michael Jordan is also not a great actor, but his movie (Space Jam) clearly has a lot of quality aspects to it, such as the integration between the live actors and animation.

The Witches (2020): Octavia Spencer is really good here, but overall the movie is a bit of a disappointment. Its main problem is that there's no subtlety or complexity whatsoever about the witches. All of the witches are immediately obvious as witches, which diminishes any sense of dread and/or discovery. Most of the actors do a fine job and the movie looks nice, but the lack of subtly or complexity kind of undermines the whole thing. I didn't think it was as bad as other people seem to, and the early scenes between Octavia Spencer and her grandson are some of the best parts of the movie. The movie doesn't have any really standout elements, but it's an okay background movie if you're not paying specifically for it. I'm not sure if kids would like it or not.
