Kid, don't threaten me. There are worse things than death, and uh, I can do all of them.
I kinda hope they give the Heartstone like two more tricks and then vary it up at some point so its not always bug/rocks/bug/obelisk. The only variety in the mission type is the escort itself and the setpiece battle at the end is pretty much “how many bulks did you get”

Also I didn’t read the hotfix notes but it feels like they fixed the oil shale chunks giving more fuel than directly mining it with the cannister. Still worth detpacking it because you pick up the chunks faster, but it’s not like 10x faster anymore.

Escort missions feel fine so far? I myself enjoy the heartstone drilling event, feels unique and fast paced with a handful of unique challenges thrown in. It'll probably start getting old eventually but so far I haven't had any difficulty with goons, probably one of the easiest start to finishes. The most trouble I've had outside bulk detonators with a team that isn't giving them the attention they required is the one time an Escort mission actually had two refueling sections.

That and trying to carry pubbies, but on Haz 4 most pubbies seem to understand the basics of the mission type and to blow out the laser spires.

What build are you using on the EPC for that? I still can't figure out that gun.

For that matter, what do you do for the other two? Explosive rounds bulldog and...? I haven't used anything other than breach cutter or fat boy PGL in ages, idk what a viable PGL build with actual ammo would even look like

It's really personal preference. I tried out Elephant Rounds the other day and they do still feel kinda good, great for deleting big bugs by shooting them in the butt. My personal fave overclock is Volatile Bullets for Bulldog with 21322 mods paired with Burning Hell minigun with 11333 mods. You mulch regular bugs with minigun and set on fire the big boys before switching to the bulldog and deleting them via their weakpoint. Probably the most efficient to get rid of Bulk Detonators in the game tbh.

I've had luck running around as a driller and boring through the base of the obelisks, they collapse pretty fast. Probably easier to snipe from the top of the Drilldozer though

Escort missions are a fun change of pace for the density of combat, they're just like 3-5 minutes too long. If the drat tank moved faster in open ground it might be a little better.

Yeah, my first escort was a 3 length 3 complexity and by the end of it i was thinking it should've ended about 10 minutes earlier. Except for bad-luck runs, I don't think a 3/3 should take more than 30-40 minutes.^ By the end of the escort we were pushing close to 50.

^ but i suck real bad; i'd guess people actually good at this game could probably clear out a 3/3 in 15 - 20

I don't think a 2-stop escort mission can be cleared in 20 minutes. I've been in groups that are really on top of the refueling and such and it's still like 22-25 minutes. And that's if all of the oil shale is easily accessible and the rooms are flat. Considering you can knock out pretty much all of the other 3/3 missions in <20 if you're well coordinated, it feels out of place.

eta: 400 morkite missions also take >20 minutes pretty consistently and those missions are also loving hellish.

I use a regular non-explosive six-shooter bulldog and it chips the top away just fine, requires some decent aim though. With PGL you can do it super easy with hyperpropellant

This is true, but it would still be nice if the meaningless numbers went up in accordance with mission length/annoyance and not just hazard level.

So far I'm loving both new mission types (in group games anyway) but that might still be the novelty effect.

When you promote a dwarf that dwarf's level goes to 1 and he gets a star above his portrait. You don't lose unlocks or equipment ever. You also unlock the forge, machine events, and new assignments from the assignment terminals (do Breach the Core ASAP)

LordAdakos posted:

Matrix cores are crafting blueprints. You use them at the Forge that opens when you promote a dwarf, spend a bunch of money and materials, and get a unique upgrade for a gun or a new cosmetic.

There's also the blank matrix cores. Have you seen any of the weird machines that spawn occasionally? Maybe even done some where you have to chuck bombs at a giant spire or something? Those are "machine events", and once you have a promoted dwarf you can start them by holding Use on the square contraption nearby. After you successfully complete them, you can use the infuser to create either a gun upgrade for one of two randomly-chosen dwarves or a cosmetic for a dwarf.

Is it though? Height advantage lets you chuck the bombs further, I honestly prefer when they're high up. Sometimes you can basically toss them from right next to the dispenser.

Maybe on a multi-level dense biozone or something where the bomb dispenser is up way high with a bunch of intervening terrain that prevents you from just raining bombs on the crystal? That's about the only time I could imagine wanting to drill it down.

Promotion assignments are a good time to try out other classes and start working on their unlocks and assignments and promotions.

Even if you don't love all the classes I'd still encourage you to promote all of them at least once so you have some flexibility in Deep Dives and a better understanding of the gameplay mechanics. Knowing what the scout can and can't fling himself onto has helped my engineering for example and you might even end up liking one of them once you upgrade your kit.

Last thing, you can definitely run your promotion missions with a group same as you would any other.

I remember that feeling well! I would suggest trying the driller out, the flamethrower is a really powerful main and drill arms are a great traversal tool. You wont be minigunning things across the map but you are still extremely useful in a fight without having to learn too much of a different playstyle like scout or engineer. Drill arms are way more interesting than zipline and you can pretty much go anywhere on the map with enough effort and creativity.

It really is useful to learn all the classes though. I liked gunner a lot, then I tried scout and the grapple is so much fun, it compensates for not having the beefy weapons. I hated engineer initially but I learned to always set my sentry down, how engy grenades work, how to shoot breach cutter and it’s also a great class. I truly have no preference now, I have the Karl-Zen of enjoying the different classes equally.

I should start doing that declaration thing with my perks, though, so I stop killing myself by trying to tame Steeves on classes where I don't have Beastmaster, or waiting too long to reposition when I don't have Sprint.

do 21122 with heatpipe oc

then one charged shot without overheating, and time a quick second shot to pop it

since it's built for ammo with heatpipe oc, you end up being able to do 30+ shots, and since you have the max radius, you get c4 sized explosions for each charged shot

usually it's easier if you are standing next to the wall with the vein and let the shot travel along the wall as it's more forgiving for you to adjust where it pops
but if you really have to you can time it so you are shooting against the wall too

it's the best thing for ceiling eggs/aquarqs/nitra and you can also air burst it right above swarms to watch them melt

Its basically the shock rifle from Unreal Tournament. Shoot orb charged shot, then hit the orb with a regular shot and that creates an explosion. Said explosion will carve out minerals, but it takes a bit of practice to get the timing down.
