It wasn't uncommon back in the day, at least around here, for the fire department to get dispatched to EMS calls that weren't life-threatening. Something like a kid breaking an arm is a perfect example.

The FD, who are all some degree of trained emergency medical professional, show up and make sure that there isn't something truly urgent like the kid bashed his head too and might have a brain bleed, or the call was wrong and the kid got his arm cut off by a thresher or some poo poo.

If it's as they expect, the kid waits while the EMTs clear more pressing calls and then gets transported when they have time, or if it's not what they expect, they can at least work to stabilize the situation while they rush the EMTs.

I recently went down a wikipedia rabbit hole and ended up at Bill Tilden who was the #1 Tennis player in the world in the 1920s. He also had a thing for teenage boys.

Maybe it's the area I live in but there is an amazing response from fire fighting vehicles and ambulances. They sort themselves out quickly but if some old person has a heart attack down the street it looks like christmas.

Firefighters can usually mobilize quicker here, and aren't really equipped to transfer someone if they need to go to the hospital, so the ambulance being dispatched still makes sense. There may be funding issues, too, like number of calls dispatched to affects budget or something, but I don't know about that.

^^^ Yeah here in the Dallas area I see firetrucks parked outside non-flaming nursing homes pretty often. Like others have said most firefighters have some EMT training, and they're usually not as busy as proper ambulances so they get rolled out to minor stuff and either sort it themselves or at least try and stabilize things while the ambo rolls out if somebody actually needs to go to the hospital.
