Song’s okay. Sounds like AC/DC alright. I’ll be buying the record for sure though.

Deffo pre-ordering the CD. Now the question is do I want the silhouette t-shirt or the yellow construction-like one? They both look cool.

Edit: Getting the yellow one since it's exclusive to the store, looks more unique, and is $5 cheaper to boot. Also, if you sign up here by clicking the "Join" button, you will get a promo code e-mailed to you that takes 15% off of your order.

New single "Shot In The Dark" is OUT!!!

Brian is mixed a bit too up front, drowning the guitars out at times, and he's got a weird effect on him here and there. It's also not quite as catchy as the last two big singles, Rock N Roll Train and Rock or Bust.

But what it has that they didn't is being LOUD. Great guitar tone on Angus, drums hit like a hammer, LEGIT solo! Still hearing some of that overly smooth Brendan O'Brien production, but thankfully less of it. Some of the 'DC edge comes through this time.

If the rest of the album sounds similar, it has a chance of being their best late-era record.

To me, this hooked me more than Rock or Bust, but not quite as much as Rock 'N Roll Train. I hope the rest of this record sounds like this too. I LOVE the way Brian's vocals sound here. It's that "edge" you describe. His voice is as strong as ever, but it has this raw effect that's giving me subtle Fly On The Wall vibes. I very much prefer a more raw, "less-is-more" approach than an overly sanitized production. The latter takes all of the feel out of it and the feel is what music is about.

Yeah, this feels more AC/DC to me than Rock or Bust did (an album that I generally don't think is that good, to be honest). There's a very slight, short delay on Brian's main track and it's definitely giving it a bit of an 80s sound.

The lads are back.

Some of the song titles are a bit deeper than usual for AC/DC. "Kick You When You're Down" sounds downright depressing. "Kicked In The Teeth" at least had a macabre edge to it. Not a single one with "Rock"!

Well "War Machine" turned out to be a dick metaphor, so I wouldn't necessarily take them at face value. At least I think it was a dick metaphor; honestly I think the guy who made the predictive algorithm write an AC/DC song came up with something that made more sense than that song.

Clean promo pic:

Also, Brian's new hearing system seems to be working smoothly, and the band is anxious to perform live:

quote:

"We had set up to do a video,” Angus Young reveals, “and we thought we could get a rehearsal place and play – to see how we were live and if Brian's [hearing] technology was working.”

"We did Back in Black straight away,” says Johnson. “If I can do that, I can do anything. And I could hear everything. We went through Shot Down in Flames, Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be – the whole set. We did 15 days, non-stop. The guitars were so sweet. I said, ‘Angus, I can hear every little note you're playing.’ And he went, ‘Oh, I better start rehearsing more’… Angus' sense of humour. It was lovely.”

“The band was playing really well,” says Cliff Williams, who has also returned to the fold following his retirement at the end of the Rock Or Bust world tour. “Brian was singing really well. ‘How about we do some shows?’ ‘Sure, let's get the ball rolling.’ And this drat virus hit. Everything was put on the shelf. We’ll put this record out and see what the future holds. Hopefully, it’s shows. That's what we’d love to do – even if it’s just a handful, just to get out there.”

“We're ready to play,” insists Phil Rudd. “We're ready to kick some rear end – seriously. I'll get a chance to show you guys what's going on with all of us, because I'm not done yet.”

I know the music video is a staged faux-performance but everyone looks so excited to be "on stage" together and Brian looks absolutely in the zone. This is some serious Back in Black era poo poo.

God I can't wait to be able to go to an AC/DC concert again.

Not to be all :filez: and stuff but a great friend of mine sent me a leaked copy of the the album and I can confirm that it loving owns—way better than Rock or Bust and on par with Black Ice, maybe a little better (I really really loved Black Ice though, so take that as you will). Everyone sounds great—guitars, rhythm section, Brian, even the background vocals are on point. Can’t wait to give AC/DC even more of my money in about a week :v:

I got to listen to it as well. My impressions after the initial spin:

It's good. It's AC/DC. All of the components are there and it won't disappoint. Feels like there's more passion here than Rock or Bust where it felt like they were just going through the motions in comparison to this. They made the right choice for singles as Shot In The Dark and Demon Fire are the catchiest tunes of the bunch. Realize and Rejection are solid too. The rest? Eh. They're not grabbing me like everything from Razor's Edge and back or even Stuff Upper Lip, but I don't feel like that's really a fair comparison either.

Like I said, I just listened to it once and plan to listen to it more. Right now, I would personally put it ahead of Rock or Bust and Ballbreaker (never was crazy about that one) and on par with Black Ice; between Black Ice and Stuff Upper Lip at best. It's a thrill to see them actually passionate about playing again, but anyone looking for Back In Black 2 aren't going to find it here. Malcolm would be proud of the boys for sure.

It’s always good to have more AC/DC but I’m a little underwhelmed by this one. None of the songs have stuck out to me so far. I don’t think it’s on the same level of Stiff, Black Ice, or Rock or Bust. It kinda shows that this is just stuff they had laying around.

I’m gonna give it more listens of course, but so far it’s not one of my favorites.

Rad interview with Angus and Brian. Angus talks a bunch about Malcolm's skill as a musician as a composer and Brian talks a bit about his hearing issues.

I love Angus's "interview room" with the leather throne and Marshall stacks behind him.

Think I'm going to buy myself a Gretsch as a Christmas present this year.

K, I've given the album a week to digest.

It's...ok. The big problem is that "Shot In The Dark" is the only fully fleshed out song on it. Otherwise, the fact that this is an album made up of bits and pieces shelved for possible future use is obvious.

I rate it better than Rock Or Bust simply because there are a fair number of good ideas on it - ROB was mostly forgettable. But these ideas rarely come together into a satisfying whole. Aside from SITD, probably the only songs I'll be listening to after the next couple of weeks are Money Shot and No Man's Land.

Demon Fire may be their second-worst single of all time (Anything Goes will always hold the trophy). Its only defining feature is it being the album's "fast track" ala Rocker, Landslide, Safe In New York City, and Baptism By Fire. The one track I consider complete filler is Wild Reputation.

Regarding production, the album's title keeps its promise by bringing back the power after Black Ice and ROB drained it out. The drums sound great. However, nothing is given space to breathe. The separation of the lead and rhythm guitars is a key part of the AC/DC sound, but here they're largely indistinguishable. Cymbals have been put everywhere, and a glaring effect has been put on Brian's voice (did they not learn a lesson from Fly On The Wall and Blow Up Your Video?)

So while the full album is barely out of the freezer in terms of having had time to cook, Shot In The Dark is a very solid single with a cool video that absolutely does what needed to be done - shout to the hills that AC/DC is alive and firing.

And with Power Up in hand, I can now assemble one full album of legit tracks from the Brendan O'Brien albums. :)
