I wish the same person had done the Strugatsky brothers because for some reason my copy of Monday Starts on Saturday is impenetrable. Roadside Picnic is alright but still has some of the weird style that probably works better in the source language

I feel like we live in enlightened enough times that we can just apply the term "Mary Sue" directly to a male character without it being a big deal.

one of the things i really like twitter for is following book people and authors and getting recommendations. i've been really enjoying Rebecca Roanhorses stuff. she has a modern/urbanish fantasy series about a post-apocalyptical world set in the navajo reservation (which escaped in many ways unscathed).

she's also got a new one out called black sun, which takes place in a fantasy realm based on pre-columbian mesoamerica. i've not gotten very far into it yet.

when i was maybe 11 years old and kind of hazy on all the sex acts and terminology i remember joking that one of our creepy older teachers was probably "knocking up little boys in the back of the church"

fortunately all my friends were also 11 and just laughed and nodded, oh totally, he's definitely doing that

yw! she’s very readable.

have you guys read vita nostra? only the first has been translated from the ukrainian. extremely good take on the idea of magic, apprentices, and training (which is not a great description, but it’s the best i got). also enjoyed max barry’s lexicon not too long ago, which might be chrarcterized as a similar genre, if magic were limited to channeling influence.

vita nostra sounds like itd be up my alley, then! i liked lexicon and a lot of barry's books, though I havent gotten to providence yet. maybe that's because a story about four people living in close proximity (though on a starship) was a bit too real for early 2020, so maybe its time for a go

i never asked for this
the worst part of any fantasy / sci fi (I guess really any genre but it’s worst in these) is having to read about the authors hosed up sex things. like it’s so ridiculous for rothfuss to not only have Amazonian sex ninjas but they also didn’t know that babies came from sex and STIs didn’t exist in their society because they were clean or something

over a decade ago I read some heinous AI singularity wank called the metamorphosis of prime intellect and it was an insanely huge amount of gore porn wedged in between normal boring sci fi poo poo. sex is a normal part of life and it wouldn’t make sense to have sexless fiction but jeez dial it back or something.
