https://twitter.com/Elaijuh/status/1332823176120832006 Donnie got a Trump judge at a hyper-low level of the PA court system that delayed things a bit (though it was too late). PA Supreme Court just killed that lawsuit with prejudice, basically 7-0 (2 republican judges would be willing to hear the lawsuit, but only if it was like a full year ago, not DURING THE drat ELECTION). Laches doctrine!

From concurrence: Petitioners waived their opportunity to challenge Act 77 before the election, choosing instead to lay by and gamble upon receiving a favorable decision of the electorate. Unsatisfied with the results of that wager, they would now flip over the table, scattering to the shadows the votes of millions of Pennsylvanians.

Defenestrategy posted:Anyone here familiar with french politics? France is...odd. Despite the common American perception that they're all effeminate and socialists and lefty as all hell, they're not. Macron is a pretty centrist, if not center right politician in France. Prior to him you had Hollande who was Socialist and Sarkozy who was Center-Right. Anyways, France's legislature is under Macron's parties control. As a result, you do get stupid as gently caress bills like this because funny enough, France has it's own problems with policing and racism (Read: people from North Africa/of North African descent or hell, just about anyone who isn't white but lives in France). Anyways, Macron won against Marie Le Pen and the National Front (French Nazis basically. gently caress you if you don't like that description) in 2017 but he did so pledging that he'd start to address the issues France has with migrants and crime, but not nearly as harshly as Le Pen promised to. Even so, you end up with stupid bullshit like this. The one metal thing is that the French will absofuckinglutely riot over anything that like this that pisses them off and it often though not always results in some walk back whenever poo poo like this happens. Like that's not an understatement, they've been riots where firefighters start fighting the cops because the firefighters were pissed off about some union thing.

Defenestrategy posted:Anyone here familiar with french politics? Unrelated, but Daniel Harper and Jack Graham of the I Don't Speak German podcast recently did about an hour and a half on the nazis of the "National Justice Party". The NJP, like a lot of far-right and alt-right shitheads right now, is actively courting disaffected leftists by slapping a veneer of economically left-wing rhetoric over their hardcore white supremacist ideology. Feels worth re-upping here because the world isn't going to magically turn to rainbows and lollipops on Jan. 20th (and, honestly, there's a whole set of daggers dangled over our heads that even a more left-wing admin with control of Congress wouldn't come away from unscathed). There's going to be a lot of pain and frustration and history has shown that young white men are particularly susceptible to getting pulled down the wrong path. Talk politics and policy with your friends. Keep an ear out for anything that sounds off and do what you can to steer them clear of any of the many traps the far right has set out for them.

France also just passed a bunch of "anti-extremism" laws targeted at Muslims. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/25/world/europe/france-macron-muslims-police-laws.html quote:The other, still to be considered by Parliament, seeks further restrictions against Islamism as the French government has defined it, reaching into some aspects of Muslim life. This bill would ban home-schooling, flag in a database those deemed to “excuse” terrorist acts, subject organizations that receive government subsidies to a test of allegiance to “the values of the republic,” and increase strictures against polygamy, which is already illegal. quote:Critics have faulted his government for a repressive, stigmatizing tone toward Muslims, perhaps a tenth of France’s population. “Under the pretext of reinforcing republican values, we’re actually serving the opponents of the republic, who have a xenophobic agenda,” said Aurélien Taché, a representative in Parliament who quit Mr. Macron’s party. They also just ordered a major NGO which documents Islamophobia to be shut down. https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/eur01/3359/2020/en/ quote:Following the horrific violent attacks perpetrated in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and Nice (France), French authorities have proceeded to dissolve a few organizations. Gérald Darmanin, the French Minister of Interior, told the media about his intention to dissolve the Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF), an NGO that combats discrimination against Muslims. He has described the CCIF as “an enemy of the Republic” and a “back room of Islamism”.6 Meanwhile, Macron was tweeting about how "secularism has never killed anyone" while this was happening.

France also passed a law recently that criminalized cop-watching or basically doing OSINT on cops, I think that’s the main driver of the current riot. Also French and Québécois firefighters are awesome and all public servants should follow the example of drop kicking cops in full bunker gear when the cops try to shut you down.

Defenestrategy posted:He's also probably one of those idiots who also parrots "COMMUNISM KILLED A BAJILLION PEOPLE IT IS THE MOST EVIL THING EVER" Doesn't that have a pretty solid foundation of truth though? Efforts at modernization in Communist countries did kill a lot of people. Forced collectivization and the Great Leap Forward both come to mind as policies that resulted in staggering body counts that may have been defrayed if the respective governments of the USSR and China had been a bit more practical. I suppose there is a pretty strong argument that due to the lack of farming mechanization in both of those countries it wouldn't have mattered whether they were communist or not, though it is my understanding that profit motive is what drove farming mechanization in the first place.
