This discussion and thinking about modern kids cartoons makes me think about how much more thoughtful and well-written cartoons are now as opposed to when I was a kid. 70's and 80's cartoons are the worst kind of trash. I was too old in the 90's to really pay attention but I think cartoons stopped being strictly for kids by the late 90's and got much more clever. Rocko's modern life and Duckman come to mind, though I don't think those were meant for kids but I'm sure they did anyways.

Duckman was definitely aimed at adults but was mostly watched by kids anyway.
